Abstract
The objective of this thesis is to research foreign direct investment in Chinese coastal area since 1979 and its impacts on China's economic development. In this respect, this thesis studied the development of foreign direct investment in the Chinese costal area, the characteristics of foreign direct investment, and the impacts through the investment. With the opening policy in 1979, China began to induce FDI from capitalist countries. In drawing FDI, there were many ups and downs in the amount of FDI. However, overall, the amount of FDI increased dramatically. As a result in 1996, the amount of FDI induced in China reached at 42.35 billion USD, becoming second largest FDI recipient in the world. In terms of industries, which FDI has been utilized, were mainly light industries and non-productive industry. But with the regulation of Chinese government in terms of the usage of FDI, the direction of FDI changed to more productive sector like automobile, pharmaceutical, transportation nuclear station etc. So far, about 120 countries have planned investment projects in China. Most of the investments have been made primarily by nearby countries such as Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Japan. With the inducement of FDI, China could obtain not only capital which is needed for their economic development but also technological skill and managerial know-how from other countries. So far China has enjoyed 13.4% growth rate and China’s inducement of FDI could be evaluated quite successfully.
