Abstract

Ann Radcliffe의 The Mysteries of Udolpho는 쟈코뱅들이 정치적인 의도에서 사용했던 고딕 장치들을 차용하고 있음에도 불구하고 급진적인 개혁보다는 과거의 질서 회복을 주장하는 글로 인식되어왔다. 그러나 본 논문에서는 이러한 주장의 근거로 제시되는 인용문들이 가지는 의미의 개방성과 불확정성이 오히려 이 소설의 다양한 해석 가능성을 새로이 확인 시켜준다는 것을 제시하고자 한다. 본고는 우선 프랑스 혁명의 실패로 야기된 감수성과 소설에 대한 평가의 변화를 살펴본다. 그리고 이와 같은 맥락에서 “설명된 초자연 explained supernatural"과 인용문이 이성에 의한 감성의 절제, 가부장적 사회 질서의 회복 등 Udolpho의 주제를 표현하고 이 소설로 하여금 다른 여성작가들의 작품에 부여되던 비난을 피하는 데 사용되었음을 제시한다. 그러나 이와 동시에 이 요소들이 주제 수렴되지 않는 목소리를 형성할 수 있는 가능성을 Bakhtin의 소설 이론을 근거로 제시하고 Udolpho의 인용문들에 대한 새로운 접근의 필요성을 제시한다. 2장에서는 Udolpho의 표제시를 기반으로 서술자의 “목소리(voice)"를 기존 문맥에서 분리되어 다른 문맥으로서의 수용이 가능한 발화 내용으로 접근한다. 그리고, Udolpho 자체를 표제시에서 명시된 대로 청자 "me"에 의해서 인용되는 내용이라고 파악한다. 이때 인용된 서술자의 목소리가 인용자 “me"의 의미체계에 수용되기는 하나, 동시에 인용의 형식이 내재적으로 가지는 불안의 요소로 인해 인용자의 주장을 의문시되는 경향도 보인다. 따라서 18세기적 사상, 이성 중심의 신고전주의, 절제된 감성 등을 반영할 것으로 기대되던 서술자의 목소리에서 이러한 사실들과 상충되는 모습이 발견됨을 밝힌다. 3장에서는 다양한 인용문들 - 제사epigraph, 인물들이 인용하고 직접 쓰는 시, 노래 그리고 산문의 인용을 집중적으로 분석하고 그들이 갖는 다양한 해석 가능성을 살펴보겠다. 이 과정을 통해서 그저 장식적인 목적으로 사용된 인용문들의 가치를 재고 해보고 이들이 부수적인 요소로 서사 내에서 의미를 갖는 것이 아니라, 여러 다양한 의식들의 반영 또는 굴절시킴을 나타내겠다. 그리고 결론적으로 이들의 의미를 결정하는 주체가 이를 인용하게 될 독자나 청자들이라는 사실을 작중 인물들의 말을 인용함으로 보이도록 하겠다. 이상의 논의는 Udolpho의 서술자가 갖는 보수주의적인 성향의 원인이 그를 인용한 “나 (me)"에 의해서 부여된 것이므로, 이 성향이 서술자의 목소리를 묘사하는 절대적인 특성이 되지 못함을 명시한다. 또한 서사 내의 인용문들도 서술자가 어떤 절대적 권위를 갖고 있는 것으로 파악된 경우에는 부수적이고 장식적인 역할을 하는 것으로 파악되었다. 그러나, 동시에 이와 같은 인용문들은 서술자가 제공하는 초자연적 사건들에 대한 설명에 의문을 제기하는 역할을 하기도 한다. 인용문은 다양한 의미체계에 개방되어 있으며 언제든지 다른 인용자에 의한 재인용 및 평가의 가능성을 내포하고 있다. 따라서 그 자체가 하나의 인용이며, 다양한 인용으로 가득 찬 Udolpho 또한 절대적이고 확정적인 의미를 갖는 글이기보다는 향상 새로운 의미에 개방되어 있는 작품이라는 관점에서 접근하는 것이 바람직하다고 여겨진다.;This thesis proposes a study on the use of quotations in The Mysteries of Udolpho, which displaces the site of meaning from the author-narrator relationship to that of the quoter-quotee. Radcliffe's quatrain, provided as an authorial preface to the book, names "me" as the listener and quoter in her representation of the "voice" of Fate. The poem thus provides a basis to read Udolpho as a quotation by a "me", who re-places, and re-presents the contents of another's "voice" as to include her own stance, i.e., the privileging of rationality, sensibility restrained by intellectual fortitude, and social responsibility. But since the quotations, like miniatures and souvenirs, may be subjected to other contexts, they remain open to various other interpretations and an essentially indeterminacy in meaning. This thesis demonstrates why it is possible to approach Udolpho as a quoted narration and the disruptive force this quality has on the previously acclaimed "conservatism" of the work. The use of many forms of quotations such as epigraphs, inserted poems, songs etc. are discussed in the same strain. As conclusion, the "reader" is named as the final source of meaning, a new "quoter" of the quotei's representation. The reader's stance both reflects and refracts the previous interpretation. Ultimately this thesis questions the legitimacy of asserting any explanation of past phenomena and suggests to re-place the "explanation" by "a quotation" as the framework for an interpretational process that remains open to further acts of "quotation".
