Mary wollstonecraft의 소설에서 나타나는 모성성과 감수성의 양상

Abstract

소위 감수성의 시대라 불리는 18세기는 다양한 분야에서 감수성에 대한 연구가 이루어진 시기였다. 감수성의 부상과 몰락을 모두 지켜보았고, 특히 여성을 억압하는 남성 중심적 논리에서 이해되는 감수성의 현장을 목격했던 Wollstonecraft에게 감수성이란 피할 수 없는 주제였다. 그리고 그녀의 저술과정은 사실상 감수성의 효용과 가치에 대한 끊임없는 탐구의 과정이었다. 이에 본 논문에서 필자는 Wollstonecraft의 소설, Mary와 The Wrongs of Woman을 중심으로 그녀가 기존의 성별화된 감수성을 극복하고 여성을 계몽하고 행동으로 이끄는 힘으로서의 감수성의 존재를 인식해 나가는 과정을 고찰하고자 한다. 우선 여주인공들의 글읽기와 글쓰기 양상에서 드러나는 인물간의 차이점이 이들의 감수성에 대한 인식을 차별화 시키고 있음을 살펴보았다. 다음으로는 인물들의 모성성이 구현되는 양상에 따라 각 소설에서 드러나는 감수성 개념이 어떠한 차이를 보이는지를 살펴보았다. Mary에서 글읽기는 기존의 성별화된 감수성에 대한 무비판적 수용의 과정이며, 글쓰기는 글읽기에서 비롯된 과도한 감수성의 자기 소진적 수동성을 그대로 반영하고 있을 뿐이다. 더욱이 어린 시절 적절한 모성애를 경험하지 못한 Mary가 그에 대한 반응으로서 형성하게 되는 과도한 모성적 감수성은 그녀로 하여금 자기 소진적이며 수동적인 감수성을 형성하도록 함으로써 스스로를 적절히 표현할 능력을 상실케 한다. The Wrongs of Woman에서 Maria의 글읽기는 Mary의 경우와 마찬가지로 무비판적인 경향이 있다. 그러나 Marin의 글쓰기는 그녀에게 딸을 위해 회상록을 쓰는 과정에서 그녀 자신과 그녀의 과거를 능동적으로 읽고 합리적으로 사유하는 기회를 제공한다. 그녀는 자신의 과거를 타인, 특히 그녀의 딸에 의해 읽혀지는 텍스트로 형성함으로써 감성과 지성, 육체와 정신의 이분법적인 양분을 극복하고 통합할 수 있게 하는 합리적 모성성의 토대를 마련한다. 이상에서 보았듯이 본 논문에서 필자는 Wollstonecraft가 감수성에 대한 이해를 확장시켜 나가는 과정을 Mary와 The Wrongs of Woman을 통해 살펴보았다. 궁극적으로 Wollstonecraft는 남성 중심적 논리에서 강요하던 성별화된 감수성을 극복하고 자기 억압적인 감수성이 아닌 자기 표현의 수단으로서의 능동적인 감수성을 인식하게 된다.;The 18th century has often been called "The Age of Sensibility". Sensibility was of central concern to Mary Wollstonecraft who had observed the rise and fall of sensibility, especially, in meri s attitudes towards feminine sensibility. In fact, all of her writings reflect a constant preoccupation with the virtues and dangers of sensibility. In this thesis, I attempt to demonstrate the process whereby Wollstonecraft overcomes a limiting gendered sensibility to reach her own understanding of sensibility as a source of power and enlightenment for women. First, I analyze the reading and writing of heroines to reveal how their differences in readings and writings result in their different embodiments of sensibility. Then, I analyze how the concept of sensibility differs in the two novels. In Mary, reading functions as a process of uncritical acceptance of a gendered sensibility, while writing reflects only the self-consuming passivity of the extreme sentiments learned from books. Moreover, Mary's immoderate cultivation of a maternal sensibility as a response to the mothering she never received precludes her ability to express herself, creating an all-consuming and passive sensibility. In The Wrongs of Woman, Maria's reading is similarly uncritical, but her writing gives a chance to perform an active reading of herself and her past to be communicated to her daughter. By formulating her past as a text to be read by others, expecially her daughter, she builds the foundation for a rational motherhood that overcomes the dichotomy of emotion and intellect, body and mind. This dissertation traces the process whereby Wollstonecraft is able to recuperate a sensibility rooted in the body that can provide the basis for moral action.
