여인의 모습을 통한 현대인의 심리적 자화상

Abstract

현대인들은 고도의 발달된 물질문명과 소비사회의 홍수 속에서 살고 있다. 급변하는 산업화된 사회 속에서 인간은 물질에 대해 끊임없이 욕망하고 소유하려 하지만 정신적으로는 더욱 더 공허하고 불안정한 마음으로 인해 방황하고 있다. 대중화되고, 구조화된 사회 속에서 인간은 극심한 고립감과 고독감을 느끼는데 이러한 것을 인간소외 현상이라고 한다. 인간소외의 문제는 개개인의 인격존중과 인간의 존엄성을 추구하는 데에 반하고 인간 존재의 의미를 무색하게 만들기 때문에 오늘날 심각한 현상으로 대두되고 있다. 이러한 현상은 앞으로도 우리 사회를 더욱 비인간화시키고 몰인간화시킬 것이기 때문에 본인은 이와 같은 사회현상에 심각한 위기를 느끼며, 오늘날 우리사회에 만연해 있는 인간소외현상에 대해 주목하여 작업을 하게 되었다. 본인은 소외된 현대인의 내면 표현을 연구목적으로 삼고, 스스로가 능동적 주체자로 살고 있지 못하고 수동적 객체가 되어 살고 있는 현대인을 작품을 통해 나타내고자 하였다. 이를 통해 인간 실존의 의미에 대해 스스로가 깨닫고 진정한 삶의 의미에 대해 모색하고자 하였다. 이를 보여주는 작가로 캐테 콜비츠와 프리다 칼로, 펑 쩡지에에 대해 연구했다. 독일화가 캐테 콜비츠는 인간내면의 깊은 절망, 고독과 우울을 예술로 승화시켰다. 프리다 칼로는 본인의 자화상을 통해 외면의 상처와 내면의 외상에 대한 시선과 응시를 놀라울 정도로 잘 드러내었다. 중국작가 펑 쩡지에는 중국의 현대인이 간직한 내면의 모습을 여성의 ‘사시의 눈’으로 표현해내며 자조적 시각을 부여했다. 이들의 작품을 통해 현대사회를 살고 있는 인간이 외면하고 싶은 실존의 문제에 대해 작가들이 어떻게 고민하고 작품으로 표현했는가에 대해 알아보았다. 이러한 내용을 담을 수 있는 소재로써 여인의 이미지를 택하였다. 현대사회의 화려한 도심 속 여인의 모습은 이 시대의 소비문화를 대표할 수 있는 아이콘이라고 생각했기 때문이다. 이것에 대한 표현방법에서는 팝 아트 작가인 앤디 워홀과 리히텐슈타인의 작업에 영향을 받았다. 본인은 소비사회와 대중문화를 직접적으로 표현한 그들 작품 속에 내함 되어 있는 사실성, 평면성과 원색의 색채 등에 영감을 받아 전체적인 작품 구상을 하였으며, 사람의 영혼의 통로라고 하는 얼굴의 분석을 통해 여인의 내면표현을 최대한 끌어내려고 하였다. 또한 화면 안에서의 즉흥적인 표현으로 먹과 색채를 대비시킴으로써 그림의 토대로 삼고자 하였다. 이와 같은 방법으로 여인의 모습 그 자체가 아니라 여인을 통해 느껴지는 불안하고 고독한 분위기로 시선을 이동시키고자 하였다. 먹과 색채의 대비로 인해 나타나는 묘한 느낌을 통해 고독과 상실감에 빠진 현대인의 모습을 작품 속 여인과 동화되어 보여주고자 했다. 이는 스스로를 작품 속 여인과 타자화 시키는 것이 아니라, 작품 속 주인공이 되어서 일체화 되고자 함이었다. 여인에게 동화되어 인간 실존에 대해 탐구하는 작업은 인간의 본래적 자아를 탐구하고 실존적 주체로 살아가는 것에 대한 중요성을 깨닫게 하였다. 본 연구를 통해 인간에게 있어 외적인 풍요와 발전은 결코 우리 삶을 행복하게 할 수 없다는 것과 내면의 풍요와 자아의 성숙, 서로간의 진실한 소통이 이 사회를 건강하게 만들 수 있다는 것을 알게 되었으며, 이를 통해 현대의 소외받고 상처받은 마음을 치료하고 공감하는 앞으로의 작업방향을 모색하고자 하였다.;People nowadays live in a society with a highly developed material civilization and overly addicted consumer culture. In a rapidly changing industrial world, people suffer from the irony of having ceaseless desire on consumer wants and being mentally lost and empty hearted. Today’s society is very popularized and structuralized. Inside this environment, people feel severe mental isolation and loneliness. This phenomenon is called Human Alienation Phenomenon. The main concern of this phenomenon is that the current society brings shame to all human existence instead of respecting one’s personality. This condition will continue to exist in our society and dehumanize our current community. I felt the seriousness on the current phenomenon and decided to shed light on this issue into my artwork. The main focus of the artwork is portraying inner side of human alienation. I tried to express the absence of active individuals who are all living as a passive whole. Through artwork, I hope that people will notice the true meaning of life and live as prominent and meaningful individuals. There are three artists who portrayed these elements through their artworks, Kathe Kollwitz, Frida Kahlo and Feng Zheng Jie. Kathe Kollwitz expressed the psychology of deep despair, loneliness and depression through art. Frida Kahlo looked upon external wounds and inner traumatism through self-portrait. The Chinese artist Feng Zheng Jie gave a mocking perspective by expressing modern man’s inner mind through women’s “glance of a cross eye.” By looking at these artworks I noticed how artists symbolized their agony over the avoidance on human existence. In order to represent these features into my artwork I have chosen the figure of women. I thought that the women’s portrait best portrays the image of consumer addiction in a splendid society. On the expression method I was mostly inspired by the pop artist Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. These two artists directly expressed consumer society and pop culture and they implicated realism, flatness and primary colors into their works. This influenced the main idea of my concept. The face is known as the passage of human spirit; I tried to make the most out of the inner mind by analyzing human faces and expression. The impulsive expression of black ink and color based the foundation in the canvas. By using these methods, I tried not to focus on the women itself but the feeling of insecurity and loneliness of these figures. Because of the high contrast of ink and color it provides the viewer a sense of uncanny feeling of loneliness and sense of loss on modern humankind through figures of women. Therefore the viewer will feel that the figure on canvas and themselves united as a whole. By being assimilated with the figures of women I realized the importance of real existence of human being and living as an active individual. Through this study it alarmed me that the external abundance and development does not necessarily satisfy our life. Instead, only truthfully understanding each other provides a richer quality of life. Through this understanding, I predict the next concept of the artwork will be treating the spirit of human alienation and wounded hearts of modern society.
