Abstract
The analysis of this dissertation focuses on the phases in which the seven-five metrics comes into the history of Korean poetry and systematically takes root as the metrics of asymmetric three-colons. The process of the foreign rhythm, seven-five, being accepted and remodeled is argued in three aspects, i.e., "form and rhythm," "song and rhythm," and "rhythm as an intrinsic component of poetry." The data are mainly extracted from the works of Yukdang(六堂), Anseo(岸曙), and Sowol(素月). What this dissertation pays attention to is that rhythm is made out of the tense relations between the fundamental rules of versification and the concrete representation. Meanwhile, it is taken into account that there are contemporary circumstances under which realistic elements surrounding the fundamental structure involve in cadence. The rhythm of our traditional poetry, shijo, among others, is based on four colons and is autonomous in regulating the number of syllables. However, at the turning point where the paradigm of creation and enjoyment undergoes a sea change, the features of a syllabic verse become salient, which are different from our own rhythm. In other words, the abstract fundamental system is encroached upon by external factors, which ends up with the autonomy of rhythm being lessened. As it stands, the seven-five cadence comes to the fore. Yukdang posits that the essence of a new kind of poem lies in the extrinsic form. The external image for not-known-yet modernism, molded through such offsprings of civilization as maps, trains, and scores, makes him suppose that a new kind of poetry should take a tangible format. Since shijo, in particular, is the aesthetic ideal of verse, a new form should correspond to that of shijo, still being differentiated from it. The seven-five metrics is fixed in the number of syllables. That is to say, it is marked in form. Besides, it is dissected into three colons, which makes it distinct from the extant form of poetry. As far as Yukdang is concerned, the seven-five seems to be the embodiment of formalism, necessary for a new type of poetry. Therefore, the form does not interact with meaning, which amounts to partiality for the outward form. According to Anseo, the seven-five is chosen as a form which can substantialize the world of song. From the beginning of symbolism on, Anseo seeks for the rhythm with which our nation can be sympathetic. Thus, he is orality-oriented whereas symbolists are music-oriented. On the other hand, his verse tends to count on formalism in order to make amends for the drifting subject's grievous and sentimental feelings. In addition, the frequent use of auditory images makes Anseo's poems disposed toward the state of song. The arguments for minyosi (ballad verse) or gyeokjosi (swing verse) provides theoretic foundations for verse-turned-into-song. The seven-five is opted for as a lyric rhythm that can best crystallize songness, where the precedents like comtemporary dongyo (nursery rhyme) as well as japka (popular song) or minyo (ballad) act upon. The solid syllabic framework of the seven-five with four lines, established by Anseo, realizes the role of poem as song, by leveling out conflicts into comparable sentiments. In the meantime, Sowol is on the border, a little far from Yukdang or Anseo. That is, he finds himself on a boundary line where he can be identified with neither the traditional world nor the unknown modern times. There can he see a being's abyss of despair and take a complex attitude toward parting, by which he acquires the existential depth in his outlook on poetry. In this regard, at the stratum of form is he in need of a rhythmic structure, interacting closely with the network of meanings in poetry while departing from the external formalism or songlike composition. Due to Sowol, the seven-five gets to be re-established as a new system, i.e., metrics of asymmetric three colons, distinguished from the superficial combination of syllables. The metrics of asymmetric three colons is defined as a form in which the inequality between the colons is maximized on one hand and the poetic speaker is placed within the fixed number of colons, i.e., three, on the other. By way of this, the spread or leap of emotion is restrained and the emotion is put in order. The modern verse is indebted to this type of metrics in that the former gains a new rhythmic locus of enjoyment through the latter. There is an argument that the metrics of modern poetry has been gradually evolved toward the already-settled goal of free verse. This is only a schematic theory of development. Tradition is not simply pinned down, but it is flexible in concordance with the reality, the point of which can be confirmed through the development of the seven-five metrics. The rhythm in modern poetry was construed as a visible form or a formula of song, which is then converged into a innate component of verse by degrees. In this process, the borrowed rhythm of seven-five serves as a medium that is eventually cast into a new metrics, called asymmetric three colons. It is made possible by influence of the fundamental construction of our poetry, disparate from the syllabic verse. The seven-five rhythm finds its implication in history in that it is imported but transformed qualitatively as our own metrics of verse.
