단편소설을 활용한 고등학교 영어지도 방안 연구

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to study the usefulness of literary texts as language teaching materials in EFL classes, to examine critically some aspects of high school English classes in Korea based on the observation of the literature lessons and the analysis of a questionnaire, and to present an effective teaching model for high school English classes through the use of literary texts. Among many kinds of materials, literary texts have been considered to play an effective role in teaching foreign language, although some people are against using them. Literature has many benefits in the English classes. First, literary works are valuable authentic materials and, therefore, literary texts make it possible to internalize the grammar and work out the meaning of words from their context. Second, the experience of literature in one language can lead to the acquisition of other languages and their cultures. Third, literary texts provide a genuine context which encourages foreign language learners to communicate. A meaningful context can serve as a necessary stimulus to motivate the students to speech. Fourth, through studying literary works, students can reflect on their own experiences and explore those of others who have different ways of life and of knowing the world. Teachers can help students gain a deeper feeling for literature as a subject and for the language use in literature. However, the success of English education using literature depends on or requires some preconditions, which have something to do with the selection of texts, the language proficiency of the students, teaching methods and the teachers' role. Among other genres, students especially seem to prefer short stories, for they are relatively easy and have a practical length. They can also give students the feeling of achievement much sooner. They can offer more various themes than other genres. The results of the questionnaire analysis show that some literary texts in the high school textbooks have problems, such as lack of student interest in terms of subject matter and simplified texts. It is also shown that English teachers' teaching methods do not consider the characteristics of literary texts in the observation of the literature lessons and teaching literary texts in the English classroom is still translating sentences into L1, explaining about grammar and memorizing vocabulary. English teachers regard teaching literature as one thing, and teaching culture as another, and actually don't teach cultural aspects in literary texts. In spite of the problems, the research findings show that students want to learn interesting, relevant and authentic literary texts. Considering students' interests based on the result of the research and characteristics of the literary text, effective teaching methods of using short stories in the language classroom are presented in the thesis. In order to present an effective teaching model of short stories, this thesis examines three basic models for teaching literature in an English language classroom. Then a model for teaching short stories is presented. In the model, students take a more active role in the reading of literature rather than simply responding to the texts. It is reasonably concluded that using literature, especially short stories, in high school English classes, increases students' interest in English, and helps them to improve their language proficiency. Additionally, it increases their literary competence by providing many opportunities of literary experience. All these results correspond with the current English curriculum which values knowledge of the real world and authentic context in the classroom. Therefore, this thesis suggests that effective ways of utilizing literary texts should be implemented in the English classes and appropriate literary texts reflecting the learners' own interests should be developed and selected. Above all, it is essential for teachers to recognize literature as a useful means to teach culture to students and help them deepen and broaden their linguistic, emotional and cognitive domain and lead to personal growth. A literature teaching program will have to be introduced in Teachers' training courses which will raise teachers' interest in the value of literary texts in EFL classrooms.;국제화, 정보화 시대에 접어들면서 의사소통 수단으로서의 영어습득과 활용에 대한 중요성이 더욱 증대되었다. 따라서 제 7차 교육과정에 따르면 영어로 의사소통 할 수 있는 기본적인 능력 배양이 영어 교육의 중요한 목표로 제시되고 있다. 진정한 의사소통 능력을 배양하기 위해서는 교실수업에 있어서 단순한 조작적인 학습자료가 아닌 실질적이고 폭넓은 맥락 속에서 지식과 경험을 제공해 줄 수 있는 진정성있는(authentic) 학습자료가 필요하다. 이에 문학작품의 가치를 생각해 볼 수 있다. 문학작품이 지닌 문화적, 언어적 풍부함과 실제적인 맥락은 학습자가 문화적 이해를 높이고 주어진 상황에서 사용하는 말들을 사실적으로 배울 수 있게 한다. 그리고 문학작품 읽기를 통해서 얻게되는 여러 다양한 간접경험은 학습자에게 즐거움을 주고 정서함양에도 도움이 된다. 그러나 문학작품이 가지는 이러한 장점에도 불구하고 지금까지 우리 나라의 영어교육실정에 맞는 문학작품의 선정이나 교재개발, 문학작품을 활용한 교수방법에 관한 연구는 미비한 편이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 외국어 교육자료로서 문학작품이 지닌 장점과 성공적인 교실 수업을 위한 전제조건을 살펴보고 여러 문학장르 중에서도 단편소설을 중심으로 하여 그 활용방안을 모색해 보았다. 먼저 수업참관과 설문조사를 통하여 단편소설의 활용에 관한 수업의 실태와 학생들의 견해를 파악해 본 후 단편소설의 실제 수업지도 모형을 제시하였다. 수업참관의 결과 문학텍스트의 특성과 장점이 고려되지 않은 채 교사의 문법 설명 및 번역의 형태로 수업이 이루어지고 있었으며 문화학습을 위한 유용한 자료로서의 문학텍스트 활용도 미진한 상태였다. 설문조사의 결과 교과서에 실린 단편소설은 내용이나 주제면에서 학습자의 흥미와 요구에 충분히 부합하지 못한 점, 개작으로 인해 학습자의 흥미를 떨어뜨리고 문화적, 문학적 체험을 하기에 부족한 점이 문제점으로 드러났다. 그러나 교과서의 이러한 문제점에도 불구하고 여전히 학생들은 언어능력향상과 동기부여측면에서 단편소설의 활용에 대한 기대가 높았으며 수업방식에서도 적극적이고 창의적인 학습활동에 참여하고 싶어하는 욕구가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 이러한 결과를 토대로 언어기능 향상뿐만 아니라 문화 습득과 문학적 체험을 통합하는 체계적인 4단계의 문학지도모형을 제시하였다. 그리고 본 연구에서 제시한 지도모형을 고등학교 교과서에 수록된 단편소설에 적용하여 실제 수업지도 방안의 예를 함께 제시하여 문학텍스트가 학습자의 창의력과 상상력, 의미추론 능력을 배양하고 궁극적으로 의사소통능력을 향상시키는데 유용한 자료로 활용될 수 있음을 시사하였다. 문학수업이 유용하고 가치있는 자료로서 효과를 거두기 위해서는 다양한 측면에서 학습자의 요구분석이 이루어져야겠으며 이를 바탕으로 학습자의 흥미와 요구에 부합하는 교재가 개발되어야 할 것이다. 또한 교육현장에서도 작품의 특성을 고려하여 이에 적합한 지도가 이루어져야 할 것이며 문학을 활용한 교실수업이 학생들에게 즐거운 경험이 될 수 있도록 하기 위해서는 교사의 다각적인 시도와 노력이 필요할 것이다.
