추상형태를 통한 상징적 표현

Abstract

20세기에 접어 들면서 현대미술은 일대 전환을 맞는다. 그것은 과학의 발전에 기인한 것이었으며, 사회와 개인에 대한 인식의 변화를 바탕으로 한 것이었다. 예술에 있어서는 표현의 순수성이 탐구되었고, 그 의미도 새로와졌다. 그것은 회화에 있어 표현의 의미가 재현이 아닌 상징 (Symbol), 즉 주제가 반드시 사물(Su bject -matter)에 얽매일 필요가 없는 순수한 의미의 형태, 선, 색 등과 관련될 수 있다는 것이다. 랭거 (Susanne K. Langer)에 의하면 회화표현의 목적은 상징에 있으며, 이러한 상징은 인간 표현으로써 감정의 이미지이다. 그리고 이러한 이미지는 회화적 형식을 통해서 실현되는데, 이때의 감정은 예술가의 삶의 개념, 내면의 정서 등을 포괄하는 생의 구현이어야 한다고 하였다. 즉 회화는 고도화한 은유이고 상징이며 이것은 선과 색의 순수한 표현요소에 의해 형상화된다. 순수 형태와 순수 색채의 추구는 미술사적 입장에서 볼 때 세잔느와 고갱에 의해 시작되며 고호의 표현주의로 이어져 새로운 추상의 문을 열게 된다. 이처럼 회화를 순수한 표현의 세계로 이끄는 것은 예술이 외부세계의 재현이 아니라 보다 진실한 내면세계를 나타내고자 하는 새로운 의식에서 비롯한 것이다. 한 시대는 그 시대의 상징을 낳는다. 이러한 상징은 특히 순수한 형태, 선과 색 등의 조형요소가 어우러진 표현으로 나타난다. 또한 상징적 표현은 개인의 감정, 무의식, 상상력 등이 포함되는데 이것은 눈으로 보는 것과 마음의 세계, 지적으로 인식하는 세계, 감각적으로 느끼는 세계 등의 다양한 측면을 포괄하여 실재를 파악하려는 인간의 욕구에 의한 것이다. 그리고 이때의 예술은 그 시대를 살아가는 사람들의 〈직관〉이며 〈상징〉인 것이다. 본인에게 작품은 그 자체가 기호적인 의미작용과 물질의 직접성을 함축하는 특성을 지닌 동시에 개인적 삶의 이미지와 사유의 과정을 표현하는 상징적 매체이다. 특히 드러내기와 감추는 행위를 통해서 나타내고자 한 표현의 양면성은 물질과 정신 사이의 괴리를 초월하는 종합적 원리로써 자아와 세계가 만나는 의미의 장을 지향한다. 원의 형상이나 선으로 새겨진 이미지들의 흔적은 본인의 내면에서 떠오르는 기억의 의미와 시간의 문제, 삶의 사유들을 상징적 드로잉으로 표현한 것이다. 본 논문에서는 예술작품에 반영된 표현의 상징적인 의미를 탐구하고, 가시적인 세계 아래에서 접혀져 있던 무의식의 기억들이 기하학적 형태와 선, 색 등의 요소의 추상화를 통해 형상화하는 과정을 다루어 보았다. 작품제작 연구에 있어서, 내용적인 측면에서는 예술의 표현에 있어서의 상징의 의미를 상징주의의 역사적 고찰과 이론을 통하여 알아 보고, 본인의 내적이미지가 추상적 상징형식을 통하여 형상화하는 과정을 진술하였다. 또한 방법적인 측면에서는 깍거나 꿰매기 등을 이용한 내적 형상의 시각화와 함께 촉감적인 재료의 사용과 그 의미를 기술하였다.;To the Author of this study, a work itself is a symbolic medium which characteristically implies the symbolic process of meaning and directness of matter and at the, same time represents individual images of life and the procedure of thinking. In particular, expressional duality the author tried to yield through exposing and hiding behaviors aims at a meaningful ground where the author's self and the world meets each other as a synthetic principle transcending the gap between mater and human mind. Traces of circular shapes or linear images are the result of attempting to put reminiscences inside the author, perpetuity of time and thoughts of life in a symbolic drawing. Through this process of working, the author tried to make this study a momentum for ascertaining her identity and the meaning of an artistic work and hoped this study could be a groundwork on which further workings explore a new possibility. My work explores the symbolic meaning of expression in particular and grasps the formative process in which subconscious memories suppressed by the visible world take form and shape through artistic signs and structure. Because a work is a material, a sign for both visible entity and spiritual transcendency, and a medium that exposes symbolic meanings. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate symbolic approaches to the subjective world of mentality(memory and dream) by paying attention to the reflex of invisible mentality on visible symbols. A symbol in general becomes a key to find out another aspects of a given image, thus a symbolic abstraction is very useful to deliver one's inner emotions to others(appreciators) and explain subconscious memories rocked up in the frame of consciousness. Also a formative working with symbols is necessary to transcend the limit of a materialized work and represent a more essential world and to pursue a more meaningful ground of expression through a more comprehensive symbolization based on the organic unity of the whole work. In making and analyzing a work, the meaning of symbol in the artistic expression has been investigated in the substantial aspect and what the symbolic images mostly used in the work imply has been discussed. And in the methodological aspect, the use and meaning of tactile materials have been examined toget.
