공감(共感)에서 소통(疏通)으로

Abstract

미술 작품은 조형 언어를 통하여 관객과 작가사이의 대화를 여는 장(場)이다. 관객은 미술 작품을 보면서 작품속에 내재된 작가의 생각, 의도를 이해할 수 있다. 세계에 대하여 개방된 존재인 인간은, 타인을 이해하고 동시에 타인의 이해를 구하는 욕구를 가지고 있다. 나와 타인의 상호 이해를 위해 상호 주관적인 정서 작용인 ‘공감’이 필요하다. 이 용어는 19세기말에 등장한 ‘감정이입’이라는 용어에서 발전한 것이다. 공감은 인간과 인간, 인간과 만물의 사이에서 그들을 연결해 주는 역할을 한다. 이것은 독립된 인격체인 나와 너의 사이에 오고가는 이타적 정서이다. ‘나-너’의 사이 영역에서 공감이 생기면, 사랑이 활동을 시작함으로써 정신적 화합을 이루게 된다. 이 논문에서는 상호작용으로서의 공감의 개념을 규명하고, 미술가와 관객간의 소통 문제에 연결시켜 보았다. 미술에서의 소통은 작품이 상징적인 매개물이 된다는 특성이 있다. 감정이입 미학은 자기를 미적 대상에 투사시키는 방법으로, 무의식 이론은 인간 심성의 동질감을 제시하는 방법으로, 각기 하나의 소통 양상이 된다. 우리는 체계적으로 이론화된 소통을 하버마스의 의사소통 이론에서 발견할 수 있다. 그는 합리적인 소통행위를 통한 공통성의 발견을 말하였다. 그의 이론은 예술의 위상을 높였으며 예술을 통한 유토피아를 지향하였다. 나의 작업은 형식주의적인 미술 방식 대신에 직접적으로 나와 세계를 느끼는 방식에 접근하고자, 구상 형태를 취하는 방법을 선택하였다. 구상형태에 창조적 여백으로서 추상적 요소를 도입하여, 동시대적인 시각효과뿐 아니라 정신적이고 초현실적인 느낌을 전달하고자 하였다. 공감은 우리가 타인과 연결된 존재라는 사실을, 궁극적으로 그것들과 정신적 화합을 이뤄야 한다는 것을 환기시키는 개념이라고 생각한다. 나의 작품은 “공감에 의한 관계 형성”이라는 주제 하에 만들어 졌으며, 주제를 코드화한 인물의 여러 양상이 나타난다. 나는 미술에 대하여 타인의 입장이 되는 관객들이 시각미술을 이해하는 방식에 공감이 중요하게 개입한다는 사고를 가지고 이 논문과 작업을 전개하였다.;Art is a medium that allows a conversation between an artist and a spectator in visual language. The spectator can understand the inherent thoughts of an artist in a visual work. Living in the world, men have desires to understand others and to be understood by others at the same time. Empathy, the mutual subjective emotion, is necessary to understand others. It is a connection between a man and another man and also between men and all creations. The word, 'empathy', comes from the German word 'Einfu¨hulng' in the late nineteenth century. It is an altruistic emotion between two different individuals. If an empathy arises between two individuals, they interact and reach a mental union. This process takes place between an artist and a spectator as well. It is the kind of communication that exists in the world of art. A piece of art transmits the artist's intentions. 'Empathetic aesthetics' makes oneself dive into an aesthetic object. 'Unconsciousness' implies the homogeneity of human mentality. Both of them are kinds of communication. We can discover a systematic theory of communication in Harbermas's communication model. His theory talks about the universality through rational communication activities. He uplifted the value of art and strived for the completion of Utopia by the means of art. Instead of using the formalistic methods, I have adopted realistic forms to directly approach myself and the world. I have imported abstract elements to the realistic forms in my painting. It carries spiritual and surrealistic mood. Empathy reminds us that we are all linked to others and that we should promote spiritual unity. My work shows various aspects of men under the theme of "relations through empathy". I expect empathy would effect the ways of understanding visual art.
