The Socio Determinants of Sexually Transmitted Infection

Abstract

This paper examines the reasons why government policies and strategies are not effective in changing the high risk sexual behaviors of young people between the ages of 15-24 years. It also aims to uncover the various social factors that contribute to unprotected sexual practices amongst young people. A qualitative method was used, using in-depth interviews with 20 respondents; 10 young ethnic Fijians (15-24 years) and 10 parents. The participants were selected from three suburban districts in the central division of Fiji. The study showed that in the socialization of young people, the application of different social norms or the practice of double standards regarding sexual behavior and premarital sex by parents contribute to the increasing high risk sexual behaviors and practices in young Fijian males. Society is somewhat tolerant of male premarital sexual activities while it protects young females and are expected to have a submissive behavior. Hence the passive demeanor of young Fijian females makes them vulnerable and become passive receivers of sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancy. The study also found that the social context in which knowledge, attitudes and decisions are developed, have significant social influences in the socialization of female and male children. Fundamental in nurturing and reinforcing healthy social norms are key socializing agents such as parents, peers, and teachers. These are crucial in building a firm foundation in young peoples’ development and sexuality. The study showed that the school environment provides an important social context that can serve to reinforce positive social norms received from home or even challenge negative attitudes. Assisted by modern technology such as mobile phones and internet, the school environment with its set of norms and values instead promote high risk dating practices and sexual behaviors. These behaviors are more pronounced in schools where Family Life Education (FLE) and Life Skills program are not included in the school curriculum. This paper concludes that socialization of young people using different standards of social norms in the homes and in schools have an impact on the development of knowledge, attitudes, behaviors and practices regarding sexuality nd development. This paper proposes various strategies that will assist parents to become positive agents of change at home and build supportive environment; especially the schools to protect children from peer pressure. More so to guide young people to become resilient and empowered individuals to build a better future.;1994년 세계인구 개발회의가 열린 이후 성인의 성(性)과 생식에관한 건강서비스가 진전되었음에도 15세에서 24세의젊은이들 가운데 여전히 성병은 증가하고 있는 추세다. 이 논문은 15세-24세 젊은이들의 크게 위험성이 따르는 성행위를 변화시키는데 왜 정부 정책이 비효율적인지에 대한 이유를 검토하고 있다. 또한 젊은이들 사이에 보호되지 않은 성적 행위에 기름을 부은 기존의 다양한 사회적 요소들을 밝히는 것을 목표로 하고 있다. 이 논문의 결과는 주로 20명의 응답자와의 심층면접을 통해 직접 수집한 자료에 기반하고 있다. 응답자중 10명은 15-24세의 젊은 피지인들이고, 나머지 10명은 피지의 수바(Suva) 시외곽 지역에 위치한 중앙 division 의 세개의 교외지역인 파레레부(Valelevu), 키노야(Kinoya), 라이와카(Raiwaqa)에있는 부모님들이다. 이 논문에서 혼전 성행위에 같은 다른 사회적 기준을 행하는 것 혹은 젊은 남녀를 사회화 시키는데 있어 행해지는 부모들의 이중적인 잣대행위가 계속해서 젊은 피지 남성들을 높은 위험이 따르는 성행위를 하도록 만들고 있고, 또한 이것은 젊은 피지 여성들의 수동적인 처신을 초래하여 결국은 치명적인 성병 전달자나 성병 감염자가 된다고 밝히고 있다. 이 논문은 지식과 결정이 이루어지는 사회적인 배경이 여성과 남성 아이들을 사회화하는데 중요한 사회적 영향력을 미친다는것을 밝히고 있다. 건강한 사회적 규범을 기르고 강화시키는데 있어서 중요한 요소들은 젊은이들의 성에 대한 인식을 올바르게형성하고, 확고한 근거를 세우는데 소중한 역할을 하는 부모님, 또래, 선생님들과 같은 핵심적인 사회화 주관자들이라고 밝히고있다. 가정 외에도, 학교 환경은 가정에서 배운 긍정적인 사회규범을강화할 수 있지만, 반면에 가정에서 습득한 부정적인 태도에도 도전하도록 하는 중요한 사회적 배경으로 입증되었다. 대신 휴대폰, 인터넷과 같은 현대기술의 도움을받고, 일련의 규범과 가치를 가지고 있는 학교 환경은 가족 인생 교육 (Family Life Education, FLE), 인생을 살아가는 기술(Life Skill)그램의 부재로 인해 위험성이 높은 데이트와 성행위를 초래하고 있다. 이 논문은 다양한 전략을 제시하는데, 이는 부모들이 아이들의변화와 발전적인 환경을 만들도록 돕는 긍정적인 행위자가 되도록 도와준다고 설명한다. 특히 학교가 아이들을 또래의압박으로부터 보호하도록 한다고 하고 있고, 더욱이 아이들이 보다 나은피지의 미래를 위한 강인한 개인들로 만드는 장소라고 설명하고있다.
