Looking through the Development Policies for the SMEs Sector in Developing Country

Abstract

Export activities and international trade are important indicators for economic development of a country. Small and medium enterprises as business units are an important element to the economy as well. This sector has always been seen playing important roles by making various contributions to several economic development indicators. Small and medium enterprises furthermore understood as an important element in the broader industrialization process in the country. Therefore, the government of Indonesia addresses these two sectors by various policies and having the development of this sector and export as part of a national strategy. However, the policies still have to prove its significant impact to both sectors. This study then finds it also important to analyze the subject of the export performance of the SMEs sector. The nature of this study is a qualitative study in analyzing the policies related to the SMEs sector. Furthermore, the policies are evaluated through the different statistical indicators from related sources. In addition, the study also mapped out the obstacles as the result of the enacted policies and the local and international economic context.
