Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate L1 influence on the L2 when native English speakers produce Korean sibilants and native Korean speakers produce English sibilants. The present thesis also examines the Korean and English sibilants produced by bilingual speakers of Korean and English to see if there is an interaction between the two languages. To examine the differences between Korean and English sibilants, this study compares the acoustic properties of the Korean sibilants produced by the native Korean speakers and those of the English sibilants produced by the native English speakers. Also, the Korean and English sibilants produced by the bilingual speakers are compared with the sibilants produced by the native speakers of each language to see how the sibilants of the bilingual speakers are different from those of the native speakers. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, the English sibilants presented the longer duration of frication noise than the Korean sibilants. Also, the F2 values of the English sibilants were higher than the Korean sibilants. Second, the Korean sibilants produced by the native English speakers showed a longer duration of frication noise than those produced by the native Korean speakers. The longer duration of frication noise of the Korean sibilants produced by the native English speakers was interpreted as coming from an L1 influence. On the other hand, the native Korean speakers produced the English sibilants in a word-initial position with a shorter duration of frication noise than the native English speakers while they produced the sibilants in a word-medial position with a longer duration of frication noise than the native English speakers. Third, the native English speakers palatalized the Korean sibilants before high front vowels as the native Korean speakers did, and the native Korean speakers did not palatalize the English sibilants before high front vowels as the native English speakers did not. Fourth, the duration of frication noise of Korean lenis /s (ㅅ)/ produced by the native English speakers was longer than the duration of frication noise of Korean fortis /s* (ㅆ)/, as those produced by the native Korean speakers. However, the native English speakers did not produce Korean lenis /s/ and fortis /s*/ in a native-like fashion because they produced the Korean sibilants with a longer duration of frication noise than the native Korean speakers. As a result, the duration of frication noise of the lenis /s/ produced by the native English speakers was close to that of the fortis /s*/ produced by the native Korean speakers, and the duration of frication noise of fortis /s*/ produced by the native English speakers was even much longer than that produced by the native Korean speakers. Fifth, the Korean sibilants produced by the bilingual speakers were similar to those produced by the native Korean speakers. However, the English sibilants produced by the bilingual speakers were similar to those produced by the native English speakers in some cases, by the native Korean speakers in other cases, and by neither the native English speakers nor the native Korean speakers in the other cases. In general, the bilingual speakers tended to produce the two sibilants from two different languages, which are phonetically similar but slightly different, with a single sound.
