Abstract
The present study has examined the musical characteristics and transmission genealogy of the Bongsan Mask Dance and the Gangryeong Mask Dance, which are played at the present day in the Hwanghae Province of South Korea. As a result of studying the mask dance music to suit the regional distinctiveness by revealing the transmission realities in accordance with the transmission genealogy of the accompaniment musics for the Bongsan Mask Dance and the Gangryeong Mask Dance, the accompaniment musics for the Bongsan Mask Dance and the Gangryeong Mask Dance were passed down by Dong-sin Park(1909~1991). Although the accompaniment music for the Bongsan Mask Dance are being passed down from Dong-sin Park(1909~1991) to be preserved by Yong-tak Lee(1967~ ), Nam-eun Kim(1967~ ) and Ho-suk Kim(1957~ ), the accompaniment musics of Gangryeong Mask Dance have not been properly handed down due to the absence of musical heirs in this system upon the death of Dong-sin Park(1909~1991) in 1991. In such situations, there were needs for the characteristic studies to be immediately accomplished for the proper transmission and preservation of accompaniment musics in the Hwanghae Province. To find the musical composition and characteristics, this study collected and examined the sound source data managed by the National Research Institute of Cultural Properties from the 1960s and the present days. Moreover, the characteristics of melodies, tonal systems and rhythmic structures were examined and based on the results, the musical similarities and differences of the Bongsan Mask Dance and Gangryeong Mask Dance were examined. The results are as follows. First, the musical composition and characteristics of the Bongsan Mask Dance were examined and the following conclusions were drawn. The musical composition of Bongsan Mask Dance is accomplished of 7 movements and different musics are used for each one. In accordance with the music used mainly per each movement, the used rhythm and music title per act appears simultaneously according to rhythm and used on top of the melody according to the used rhythm. Musics of "Buddhist invocation," "Taryeong Sinawi," "Taryeong" and "Gutgeori" are used. In the gilnori prior to the 1st movement, the musics of "Gutgeori" and "Taryeong" are used, in the 1st act of sasanghwa dance, the musics of "Buddhist invocation" and "Taryeong" are used, in the 2nd movement, musics of "Taryeong" and "Taryeong Sinawi" are used and in the 3rd act of bupgo dance, the "Taryeong" is used while in the 3rd act of sadang dance, the "Taryeong" music is used. Furthermore, in the 4th actof noseung dance, the "Buddhist invocation" and "Taryeong" are used, in the 5th actof the lion dance, the musics of "Taryeong" and "Gutgeori" are used, in the 6th act of yangban(aristocrat) dance, the music of "Gutgeori" is used and finally, in the 7th act of miyal and younggam(old man) dance, the music of "Gutgeori" is used. As a result of examining the performances for each act of the Bongsan Mask Dance, they were divided into two categories of samhyeon-yukgak based accompaniment and the percussion based accompaniment. The acts performed in the samhyeon-yukgak accompaniment were acts 1 through 7 and the acts performed in the percussion based accompaniment were the gilnori and the 3rd act. Furthermore, the gilnori performance is very distinctive in that it divides into the percussion organized performance and the Taepyeongso percussion organized performance. Upon the examination on musical characteristics of the Bongsan Mask Dance, it was found that the entire accompaniment music in Bongsan Mask Dance were in the structural form of focusing on the piri melody and in accordance, the haeguem melody processed in the similar structural form with the piri melody. The scales appearing in the melody used the musical characteristics of gyeongtori and scales of seodotori constructed in the typical melodic structure of f, g, b♭, c' and d' focused on the b♭ and the tori appeared as gyeong-seo tori combined tori due to the influences of regional musical language. Music is repeated according to the performance or dance without relation to the number of rhythms and this is the musical occurrence that appears according to the influences of acts. Secondly, the following are the results from examining the musical composition and characteristics for each act of the Gangryeong Mask Dance. The Gangryeong Mask Dance is composed of 7 total acts and different accompaniments are used for each act. Moreover, the music mainly used for each act is "Buddhist invocation" "Taryeong" "Jajin Gutgeori" and "Gutgeori." In the gilnori, musics of "gil gunak" and "gutgeori," in 1st act of saja(lion) dance, musics of "taryeong" and "jajin gutgeori,' in 2nd act of malddokee dance, musics of "Buddhist invocation" and "taryeong," in the 3rd act of mokjung dance, "Buddhist invocation," "taryeong" and "gutgeori," in the 4th act of sangjwa dance, "Buddhist invocation," "taryeong" and "gutgeori," in the 5th act of yangban dance, "gutgeori" and "taryeong," in the 6th act of noseung and chibalee dance, musics of "gutgeori," "taryeong" and "Buddhist invocation" and finally, in 7th act, miyal younggam and halmee dance, music of "jajin gutgeori" were used. As a result of examining the performances for each acts of the Gangryeong Mask Dance, they were divided into the form of samhyeon-yukgak based accompaniments and percussion based accompaniments. The acts performed in the samhyeong-yukgak accompaniment were acts 1 through 7 and the acts performed in the percussion based accompaniment included the gilnori and the milyal younggam and halmee dance of the 7th act. Moreover, the performance format of gilnori is organized to continue after the percussion based accompaniment, piri and percussion. Upon the examination on musical characteristics of the Gangryeong Mask Dance, it was found that the entire accompaniment music in Gangryeong Mask Dance were focused on the piri melody. Third, the following conclusions were found as a result of comparing the musical characteristics of the Bongsan Mask Dance and Gangryeong Mask Dance. Although both of the mask dances were composed of 7 acts, the musical compositions used for each act were not the same. The musical composition for each act of the Bongsan Mask Dance included "taryeong" and "gutgeori" for gilnori, "Buddhist invocation" and "taryeong" for the sasangjwa dance of act 1, "taryeong" and "taryeong sinawi" for palmokjung dance of act 2, "taryeong" for the bupgonori and sadang dance of act 3, "Buddhist invocation" and "taryeong" for the noseung dance of act 4 and "taryeong" for the saja dance(lion dance) of act 5. Moreover, the musical composition for each act of the Gangryeong Mask Dance included the "gilgunak" and "gutgeori" for gilnori, "taryeong" and "jajin gutgeori" for saja dance(lion dance) in act 1, "Buddhist invocation" and "taryeong" for maldookee dance of act 2, "Buddhist invocation," "taryeong" and "gutgeori" for the mokjung dance of act 3, "Buddhist invocation," "taryeong" and "gutgeori" for the sangjwa dance in act 4, "gutgeori" and "taryeong" for yangban dance of act 5 and "gutgeori," "taryeong" and "Buddhist invocation" for the noseung and chibalwee dance of act 6 and the miyal younggam and halmi dance of act 7. When the performances formats used by the Bongsan Mask Dance and the Gangryeong Mask Dance are compared, they are performed in the arrangements of samhyeon-yukgak from act 1 to act 7 but for the gilnori, the instrumental arrangements of the two mask dances tend to differ. The performance format used in the Bongsan Mask Dance is in the arrangement of percussion and acoustics with percussion based accompaniment while the performance format used in the Gangryeong Mask Dance is performed in the arrangement of percussion and piri with the percussion based accompaniment. The musical melodies and rhythm that are commonly used in both Bongsan Mask Dance and Gangryeong Mask Dance are the musics of "Buddhist invocation," "taryeong sinawi," "sinawi" and "gutgeori." For Gangryeong Mask Dance, the melodies and rhythm of "Jajin gutgeori" are used by adding the same melodies as the music of "gutgeori" and the "gutgeori" rhythm of the Bongsan Mask Dance and the Gangryeong Mask Dance are approximately 󰁜=66 for each 4/󰁜 and the music of "Jajin gutgeori" is performed faster at approximately 󰁜=86 for each 4/󰁜. Although the melody appears to be the typical northwestern melodic process with characteristics of going upward from f to c', which appears in the seo-do(northwest) regions in candence melody, the scale follows the typical f, g, b♭, c', d' scale when examining the overall scale process. Therefore, the tori that appears in the accompaniment music of the Bongsan Mask Dance and the Gangryeong Mask Dance are composed of various tori due to the influences of regional musical languages and mainly composed of the Gyeong-Seodo tori. Although the rhythms are composed with basic speed rhythm such as "Budhist invocation," "taryeong sinawi," "taryeong" and "gutgeori," the rhythm in "taryeong" and "gutgeori" of Gangryeong Mask Dance display differences in that they are composed with rhythms of fast speeds according to performances or dances with the "Jajin taryeong" or "Jajin gutgeori." For the music of mask dances, the specific melodies appear repeatedly throughout the entire music according to the performance or dance without relation to the number of rhythms and they have the characteristics of being greatly influenced by the drama. When examining the frequencies of yosung(vibrant notes) that appear in the Bongsan Mask Dance and Gangryeong Mask Dance, it can be found that there are greater frequencies of yosung that appear in the melodies of Bongsan Mask Dance when compared to those of the Gangryeong Mask Dance. That is because the musical speed of Bongsan Mask Dance had proceeded slower than the music of the Gangryeong Mask Dance to have greater ejection frequencies of yosung that stretch out wider and higher while the Gangryeong Mask Dance omitted yosung by being conducted at faster speeds. When comparing the musical data of the Bongsan Mask Dance and the Gangryeong Mask Dance from 1960s and the present day, no melodic changes occurred for the music used in Gangryeong Mask Dance. However, it can be found that Bongsan Mask Dance had used melodic forms with 4~5 variations of melody in "taryeong" and "gutgeori" when examining the piri and haegeum melodies of the 1960s but at the present time, it is fixated into a single form. Also, the accompaniments of two mask dances had the same melodic structure but had different speeds of rhythm. There were greater parts of the Gangryeong Mask Dance that were composed with speedy rhythms in comparison to the Bongsan Mask Dance. If the speed of "taryeong" had varied at 󰁜=80~108 in the 1960s, the current speed of "taryeong" has been standardized at 󰁜=80. The significance of this study is to establish the foundation of transmission and development of the traditional Korean music in the future by drawing the music scores, and by analyzing the characteristics of haegeum accompaniment musics for Bongsan Mask Dance and Gangryeong Mask Dance which are not recorded yet.;본고에서는 오늘날 한국에서 황해도 탈춤 음악이 연주되고 있는 탈춤 중 봉산탈춤과 강령탈춤을 대상으로, 전승계보와 과장별 음악적 특징을 살펴보았다.
