존 크랑코(John Cranko)의 안무스타일에 관한연구

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to study the choreographic style of John Cranko(1927~1973) who was the most popular choreographer in the ballet boom era of the 1960s and played a lubricant role in the 20th European ballet with the modifier of 'Noverre of the 20th century' and ' the great master of drama ballet' . He has choreographed numerous ballet works by constructing his own unique choreographic style, developed the devastated German ballet at the time, and made the German Stuttgart Ballet Company to be a world-class ballet company by catching eyes of the general public who didn't have interest in ballet. Like this, the influence of a great choreographer makes not only excellent works, but also gets to a large contribution to the development of dancing. Accordingly, it is thought that studying the choreographic style of John Cranko would give a guideline on choreographic methods of ballet works. The process of this study has analyzed works in the aspects of the development of works and character portrayals, movement phrases and music & stage art by selecting「Romeo and Juliet」(1962),「Onegin」(1965) and「The Taming of the Shrew」(1969) which are the representative works of John Cranko. It could be known that his characteristic choreographic style shown through the analysis of his works is a dramatic form and was placing emphasis on development based on storytelling with diverse and expressive movements showing human psychology. His characteristic choreographic style showed a diverse aspect of a strong dramatic development that finishes the classic ballet capable of being bored to a devastating end by driving it to a tragedy, while converting variously emotional and tragic things, and showed the development of works smeared with laughter and beauty by using comedy and lyricism. His characteristic choreographic style made dancing into a realistic and affluent story expressing human psychology through movements, while the movements of the dancers express the development of works, future situations and the in-and outside of the main characters. Through the result of the study of John Cranko’s works, it could be known that they are actively being performed until present because of their strong stories and expressive movements. However, it is the real situation that vitalization of creative ballet is not being achieved in our country's ballet. It is thought that studying a style of a great master like John Cranko would provide reference cases and guidelines on ballet choreographic methods to our korean ballet, so it is expected that world-class ballet works come out even in Korea by studying choreographic styles of much more choreographers.;본 논문은 ‘20세기의 노베르’, '드라마발레의대가' 라는 수식어와 함께 1960년대 발레붐(Balletboom)시대에 가장 인기가 많았던 안무가이며 20세기 유럽발레에 윤활제 같은 역할을 한 존 크랑코(John Cranko, 1927~1973)의 안무 스타일에 관한 연구이다. 그는 자신만의 독특한 안무 스타일을 구축하여 수많은 발레작품을 안무하였으며 당시 황폐하던 독일 발레의 발전과 발레에 관심 없었던 대중들의 눈을 사로잡아 독일 슈트드가르트 발레단을 세계적인 발레단으로 만들었다. 이렇듯 위대한 안무가의 영향력은 훌륭한 작품을 만들어낼 뿐만 아니라 무용의 발전에 큰 공헌을 하게 된다. 이에 존 크랑코의 안무스타일을 연구하는 것은 발레작품 안무법에 대한 지침서를 제공해 줄 것이라고 생각된다. 연구과정은 크랑코의 대표 작품인「로미오와 줄리엣」(Romeo and Juliet, 1962),「오네긴」(Onegin, 1965),「말괄량이 길들이기」(The Taming of the Shrew, 1969)를 선정하여 작품전개 및 인물묘사, 움직임 프레이즈, 음악과 무대미술 측면에서 작품을 분석하였다. 크랑코의 작품분석을 통해 나타난 그의 특징적인 안무 스타일은 극적인 형식으로 스토리텔링에 근거한 전개와 인간심리가 드러나는 다양하며 표현적인 움직임에 중점을 두고 있었다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 서정적인 것과 비극적인 것을 다양하게 전환시키면서 비극으로 점점 몰아가서 파국으로 끝내는 강렬한 극적인 전개, 희극과 서정성을 이용하여 웃음과 아름다움이 묻어나는 작품의 전개는 지루할 수 있는 클래식발레의 다양한 면을 보여주었다. 특히 인간의 심리를 움직임으로 표현함으로써 무용수의 움직임이 작품의 전개와 앞으로 일어날 상황, 주인공들의 내면과 외면을 표현해내며 춤이 사실적이며 풍부한 이야기가 되게 하였다. 작품분석을 통해 나타난 연구결과는 크랑코의 발레는 작품전개에 있어 극적이며 다양한 움직임표현법이 나타난다는 특징을 고찰할 수 있었고 그의 작품들은 모든 대중들에게 쉽게 이해되며 공감할 수 있었으며 무용인을 위한 볼거리가 아닌 모든 대중들이 즐기는 발레작품을 안무하였다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 강렬한 스토리와 표현적인 움직임으로 크랑코의 작품은 현재까지도 활발하게 공연되고 있다. 하지만 우리나라의 발레는 창작발레의 활성화가 이루어지지 못하고 있는 현실이다. 크랑코와 같은 위대한 안무가의 스타일을 연구하는 것은 발전하고 있지 못하는 우리나라발레에 발레안무법에 대한 참고사례와 지침서를 제공해 줄 것이라고 생각되며 더 많은 안무가들의 안무스타일이 연구되어 우리나라에서도 세계적인 발레작품이 나오길 기대해본다.
