기독교 무용창작작품 『프쉬케의 날개』에 관한 연구

Abstract

오늘날 많은 현대인들은 진정한 자유와 기쁨, 그리고 행복을 찾으려고 노력한다. 문명의 혜택을 누리며 편리함과 안락함 속에서 살고 있음에도 불구하고 그 속에서 참된 진리와 자유, 그리고 기쁨은 발견하기가 어렵다. 오히려 허탈하게 밀려오는 상실감과 고독한 외로움은 현 사회의 인간들을 목적 없이 방황하게 만든다. 게다가 인생에 찾아온 어둠의 시기, 즉 고난과 역경은 삶의 무게를 가중시키고 인간의 영혼을 위축하게 한다. 사람마다 고통의 무게와 종류는 다르지만 진정한 삶의 의미가 무엇인지, 인간의 근원은 어디인지 생각해보게 한다는 점에서는 모든 사람들에게 동일하게 적용될 것이다. 이러한 실존적인 질문에 대해서 성경은 인간이 영이신 하나님의 형상대로 창조된 존재이며(창세기 1:27), 만물이 다 그로 말미암고 그를 위하여 창조되었다고(골로새서 1:16) 말하고 있다. 인간이 영성을 지닌 존재라는 것은 세기에 걸친 많은 예술작품을 통해 확인할 수 있는데, 특히 원시예술에서 보여 지는 애니미즘적인 예술적 행위가 문명의 발전과 함께 미적형식이 가미되어 신에 대한 찬양과 신앙의 표현, 그리고 교리의 전달 매체로서 종교와 상관관계를 맺으며 발전하였다는 것은 영성을 지닌 인간이 예술이라는 표현수단을 통해 신에 대한 열망과 기원을 구현하고자 하는 시도임을 밝혀주고 있다. 그러나 현대의 예술은 단지 신에 대한 열망과 기원에 대한 표현수단만으로 존재하지 않는다. 예술가의 개성과 창조성 그리고 철학적 세계를 구현하는 의사소통 수단이며 때로는 사회적 이슈들을 표현하는 매체가 되기도 한다. 이것은 현대의 예술이 가지는 장점이지만 동시에 단점이 되기도 한다. 자유로운 표현이라는 장점을 통해 보다 숭고한 정신을 표현할 수 있게 되었지만 다른 한편으로는 다원주의라는 흐름에 따라 비윤리적인 부분마저 예술이라는 명목아래 묵인하는 경향이 있기 때문이다. 신의 부재로 인한 영적 빈자리에 대한 갈망은 인간의 실존적인 고독함으로 나타나기도 하고, 그로부터 발생한 현대의 예술에서도 표명되고 있다. 신학자 리차드 니버(H. Richard Niebuhr)는 신의 부재로 인해 전도된 선과 방향이 빛나간 문화를 바로잡아야 할 것을 이야기 하고 있는데, 이에 대해 무용창작작품 『프쉬케의 날개』는 영혼을 지닌 인간이 영적인 성장을 하여 참된 자유와 기쁨을 얻는 과정을 주제로 삼아 인간의 실존적인 질문에 대하여 예술적인 형식으로 대답하고자 하였다. 무용창작작품 『프쉬케의 날개』는 인간의 영적성장을 나비가 거듭나는 과정에 비유하여 안무를 구성하였다. 전체 4장으로 구성하였으며 각 장면에 따라 1장에서는 하나님을 만나기 전의 억압되고 고립된 영혼을 그려내고 2장에서는 영혼의 감정적 절규를, 3장에서는 성령의 이끄심과 거듭남을 4장에서는 기쁨과 자유를 얻게 된 영혼의 노래를 그려내었다. 또한 움직임 측면에서는 클래식 발레의 기본 동작을 토대로 안무를 구성하고, 수축과 이완(Contraction and Release), 낙하와 회복(Fall and Recovery), 플렉스(Flex)된 각진 동작과 옷을 사용한 일상적인 움직임 등 현대적인 움직임의 특성을 응용하여 작품의 완성도를 높이고자 하였다. 작품에 사용된 음악은 극적인 예술표현과 전문성을 위해 다양한 장르에서 움직임과 주제에 부합하는 음악을 선정하여 작품에 결부시켰다. 1장에서는 스산함과 어두운 분위기의 바그너(Richard Wagner)의 트리스탄과 이졸데(Tristan and Isolde) 서곡을, 2장에서는 고독한 심경을 느끼게 하는 슈베르트의 피아노 트리오 제 2번 마장조 Op.100 D.929 중 2악장을, 3장에서는 신비스러운 느낌을 주는 라벨(Maurice Ravel)의 밤의 가스파르(Gaspard De La Nuit)중 1악장 물의 요정을, 4장에서는 평온함과 유연한 선율이 느껴지는 마스카니(Pietro Mascagni)의 카발레리아 루스티카나(Cavalleria Rusticana) 간주곡을 사용하였다. 각 장면마다 다른 분위기의 음악을 사용함으로서 각 장면의 주제를 표현하고 영혼의 감정전환을 알리고자 하였다. 의상은 시각적인 요소로서 영적성장 이전과 이후를 구분하기 위해 어두운 색상의 가운(Gown)형식의 겉옷과 밝은 하늘색 원피스(Dress) 의상을 두 벌을 사용하였다. 어두운 색의 겉옷은 영혼의 어두움과 억압된 상황을 상징하며, 무용수의 움직임을 고려하여 신축성이 높은 소재로 제작하였다. 원피스는 밝은 하늘색과 실크(Silk) 소재를 사용하여 하나님의 빛이 투영된 새로운 자아와 자유를 상징한다. 주제와 움직임을 고려하여 제작된 의상은 작품을 도와주는 환경적인 요소로 작용하도록 하였다. 본 연구는 무용예술이 영적인 표현수단과 숭고한 정신세계의 표출이라는 것에 대해 확고한 당위성을 제공하고, 모든 사람에게 예술이라는 표현을 통해 영적인 성장의 길을 열어주는 소통의 매개물로서, 더 나아가 앞으로의 예술이 추구해야 할 가치관과 발전 방향을 도모하는데 연구의 의의를 갖는다.;These days, numerous people in the modern age try hard to search for genuine freedom, joy and happiness. Despite the fact that they live in comfort with utmost convenience while enjoying the benefits of the civilization, they find it hard to find genuine truth, freedom and happiness in their life. In fact, sense of loss and solitude as well as loneliness that come in a despondent manner, make human beings in the modern age to wander around without a purpose. Moreover, the dark period of one’s life, that is the ordeals and difficulties, add on the weight to life and withers the human soul. Although the weight and type of pain are different for everyone, this will apply equally to everyone since this leads to the universal questions such as the meaning of the genuine life and the origin of human beings. Regarding this existential question, the Bible says that the human beings are the beings that were created in the form of God, which is a spirit (Genesis 1:27). Thus, all things in the universe were created for Him as a result (The Letter of Paul to the Colossians 1:16). Numerous artworks produced during many centuries prove that the human beings are the beings with spirituality. In particular, the fact that aesthetic form is added onto the animism artistic acts that are shown in the Primitivism music along with the advancement of the civilization and the fact that it advanced while forming relationship with the religion as a medium for delivering praise of God, expression of the faith and doctrine demonstrate the attempt for the human beings who have spirituality to realize the desire and wish towards God through the expression medium called the art. However, the contemporary art does not merely exist as an expression medium for the desire and wish towards God. This is a communication medium that realizes artists’ unique characteristics, creativity and philosophical world. Sometimes, it becomes the medium for expressing issues in a society as well. This is the strength of the contemporary art, but sometimes, this becomes a weakness. Although it is possible to express an increasingly holy spirit by leveraging its strength which is the ability to express freely, it also tends to neglect even the non-ethical aspects with the pretext that it is art by following the flow of time called pluralism. Thirst for the spiritual emptiness that results due to the absence of God sometimes manifest in the form of human beings’ existential solitude, and it is expressed in the contemporary art that stemmed from this as well. Theologian H. Richard Niebuhr addresses the need to correct the culture that has deviated from the direction of goodness due to the absence of God. To this, the dance work, 『Psyche’s Wings』 is based on the theme with which human beings with a soul gain genuine freedom and happiness by growing spiritually, seeking to answer human beings’ existential question in an artistic form. Choreography for the dance work, 『Psyche’s Wings』was done by using the metaphor in which butterfly is born again to depict human beings’ spiritual growth. The piece is comprised of four acts, The Act 1 depicts the soul that was repressed and alienated before meeting God. Act 2 addresses the emotional despair of the soul. Act 3 depicts lead and re-birth of the Holy Spirit. Act 4 addresses the song of the soul that gained happiness and freedom. From the movement aspect, dance movements were choreographed using the basic movements of the classic ballet. The piece’s quality was increased by applying the contemporary movements such as the angulated movements subjected to Contraction and Release, Fall and Recovery and Flex and everyday movements using clothes. As for the music used for the piece, a musical piece that is suitable for the movements and theme from diverse genres was used for the dramatic artistic expression and specialization. In the Act 1, Richard Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde overture that conveys dreary and dark ambience was used. In the Act 2, second movement of the Schubert’s piano trio No. 2 E major Op.100 D.929 that conveys loneliness was used. In the Act 3, the first movement of the Maurice Ravel’s Gaspard De La Nuit, which is Ondine that conveys mystical feeling, was used. In the Act 4, Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana interlude that conveys peace and flexible melody was used. By using music of difference ambience for each scene, the piece sought to show the change in soul’s emotion by expressing theme of each scene. For the garment, two garments were used to distinguish the before and after of the spiritual elements as visual elements; outer garment of the dark gown type and bright sky blue dress. Outer garment of the dark color symbolizes the darkness of the soul and repression, and it was produced using highly elastic material by factoring in the dancers’ movement. As for the dress, light sky blue color and silk material were used to symbolize the new ego and freedom that are projected with the light of God. The garments that were produced by factoring in the theme and movements react as the environmental element that helps the piece. This research is meaningful in the sense that it suggests the value systems and direction for growth that art has to pursue after going forth as the medium for communication that heralds the path for spiritual growth to everyone through the expression medium called the art and by providing firm appropriateness on the art of dancing as the spiritual expression medium that expresses holy spiritual world.
