With dramatic increase of spatial resolution of image sensors, the number of photon collected at each pixel has decreased. Thus, the influence of the Poisson noise, which is signal dependent, has become prominent over signal independent Gaussian noise. Especially, a host of image systems such as fluorescence microscopy and astronomical applications can detect a limited number of photons due to various physical constraints. The images acquired under these conditions have low-SNR including signal dependent noise. A number of researchers have developed denoising algorithms to enhance image qualities. However, most of research assumes that noise has Gaussian probability distribution which is signal-independent. In this paper, I propose noise reduction algorithms for noisy images which can be modeled as a combination of Poisson and Gaussian probability distribution. To remove noise, it is essential to separate noise from the true image, which is hard in the image domain. Therefore many denoising algorithms have been performed in frequency domain. Wavelet transformation (WT) is widely used in noise reduction, because it has properties of spatial domain and frequency domain simultaneously. However, WT cannot represent smooth contours compactly, while it is good at isolating discontinuities at edge points. To overcome the drawback, new transforms such as contourlet have been developed. Contourlet transformation provides the information of the directional components in images as well as dividing images into high and low frequency components using Laplacian pyramid (LP) filter and directional filter bank (DFB). Thus the proposed algorithm adopts contourlet transformation instead of WT. I also apply Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) for efficient noise reduction with a modeling framework that neatly describes the horizontal and vertical dependencies which are the properties of transform coefficients of natural images. The HMM algorithm adopts an independent mixture model to match the non-Gaussian nature of the wavelet coefficients and hidden Markov models to characterize the key dependencies between the wavelet coefficients. Furthermore, this method estimates optimal HMM parameters using expectation maximization (EM) algorithm and performs noise reduction with Bayesian estimation. In this paper, an effective denoising algorithm for Poisson-Gaussian noise is proposed using contourlet transformation. We supplement cycle spinning and Wiener filtering to achieve further improvements. We finally show experimental results with simulations and fluorescence microscopy images and demonstrate improved performance of the proposed approach through extensive comparisons with state-of-the-art techniques.;영상 센서의 해상도가 기하급수적으로 증가하면서 화소 하나당 수집되는 광자의 수가 감소하여 신호 의존적인 Poisson 잡음의 영향이 커지게 되었다.
