Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the hybrid images that appear in surrealist paintings. The word 'Hybrid' derived from Latin that means a mongrel by biological crossbreeding of different races or breeds. The definition of hybrid due to its undefined multiple implications entailed a negative connotation in society that held the value of pureness high. However, in the realm of Surrealism the hybrid figures are expressed in more diverse ways than any other trend, adding a new value as a modeling expression which surpasses the aesthetics of Surrealism. Fighting fiercely against the values of rational epistemology and Dualism, the goal of the Surrealists was to break down the social, political and cultural principles that were controlling the reality. The reason that Surrealism promoted an aesthetic premise which involved a paradoxical system; the two opposite worlds of reality and dream being intercommunicated was to actualize fundamental freedom that was beyond the limitations of human reasoning. Therefore the concept of Hybrid fit well into the paradoxical aesthetic of Surrealism as it deviated from restricted reasoning of Dualism suggesting a parallel relationship between two heterogeneous elements. The Surrealists emphasized the duplicity of the mind through an image of Siamese twins who had two heads stuck together. They raised a question regarding the concept of uniformed identity which was prevalent since the modern era by depicting unconsciousness, which was oppressed deep inside the mind, as the essence of human identity. In addition, the hybrid images that entailed juxtaposition and recombination of the body parts suggested a breakdown of the organic uniformity of human body. By doing do, they disintegrated the realm of aesthetic beauty and showed a violating power to confuse the established system. The breakdown of the fixed identity was witnessed in the realization of androgynies. They ardently welcomed the concept of androgynies which entailed the traits of both genders. Despite the diverse and contradictory outcomes depending on the ways they were expressed, they shared the same goal; to disintegrate the dichotomy of gender differences. They also tried to make a channel for communication between two different worlds by crossbreeding. The half-man and half-beast figures symbolized the human instinct and primal traits hidden behind civilized world. The hybrid images of human and plant meant the natural vitality and innovative power. Finally, the surrealists noticed that everyday objects corresponded with unconsciousness bringing the hidden desires to the surface. The hybrid of human body combined with objects broke down the boundary of the living and the dead, the mind and the materials, mediating the contradictory concepts such as consciousness and unconsciousness, reality and dream and life and death. From the studies above, the researcher suggests the following; the hybrid images realized in surrealist paintings shared the same beliefs with aesthetics of paradox and intercommunication of Surrealism which had a goal of emancipating human existence through intersecting, mixing, infiltrating and dissolving contradictory elements. The logic behind the hybridization derived from the premise that there was a tension between these contradictory elements and promoted preserved uniformity of these characteristics. Therefore the hybrid images created through the process of 'choice' and 'integration' are the representations of the will of the Surrealists to bring awareness of the problems in reality and solve them. In other words, the hybrid images are the main aesthetic expressions of Surrealism which pursue the optimum balance between the two different worlds.;본 논문은 초현실주의 회화에 나타난 혼성 이미지에 대한 연구이다.
