텔레비전 드라마에 비친 영국 산업혁명

Abstract

Although television dramas have many advantages as materials that can be used in history lessons, they are often discredited for the possibility of distortion and misrepresentation. However, if we take selective approach assessing the value of television dramas for history lessons, we can successfully make use of them in history classes. This study looks at BBC’s Classic Drama Series in order to explore the potentiality of television dramas as world history teaching materials. BBC dramas featured in Classic Drama Series are easily accessible, popular amongst people, and interesting to watch. Above all, these dramas are made based on strong historical researches and studies maximizing the effect of telling history. I narrowed down the theme of the dramas to British Industrial Revolution for it has such immense historical significance and a variety of dramas revolving around this theme are available. Three dramas I chose are 「North and South」 (2004), 「Cranford」 (2007) and 「Oliver Twist」 (2007). By examining various aspects of Industrial Revolution revealed by these dramas, this study tries to explore ways to adopt television dramas to history education.;최근 역사교육에서는 교과서 이외 영상물을 역사자료로 이용한 수업이 주목을 받고 있다. 영화, 다큐멘터리, 드라마로 대표되는 영상물 중에서 특히 드라마 장르는 학생들의 역사의식 형성에 많은 영향을 미치고 접근성, 대중성, 흥미성 면에서 장점을 갖지만 항상 제기되는 허구와 역사왜곡의 논란으로 역사교육에서 비판 받아 왔다. 또한 드라마를 역사수업자료로 이용한다고 하여도 모두 국내 드라마에 한정되어 있었고 활용의 문제에 대한 언급이 주를 이루었다. 이에 본 연구자는 드라마를 수업 현장에 활용하는 여부를 논의하기 이전에 드라마가 얼마만큼 역사적 사실이나 역사적 맥락을 다양하게 그려내고 있는지를 분석함으로써 드라마가 갖는 역사수업자료로서의 가치를 파악하는 일이 가장 먼저 선행되어야 할 작업이라고 보았다. 또한 국사수업만을 위한 드라마 연구에서 벗어나 세계사 수업 자료로 이용할 수 있는 드라마를 선정하고 그 내용을 분석하는 작업이 역사 교육에서 중요할 것으로 판단하였다. 이에 본 연구는 역사교사의 입장에서 드라마 내용을 구체적으로 분석하여 교과서 외에 다양한 역사적 현상을 다루어 역사수업자료로서 가치가 있는 드라마는 어떠한 것이 있는지 살펴보고 지금까지는 생소했던 세계사 수업 시간에 역사수업자료로 활용할 수 있는 드라마를 선정하여 소개하는 것을 목표로 한다. 역사수업자료로서 드라마가 갖는 가능성을 탐구하기 위해 본 연구자는 영국 BBC에서 제작한 고전연속물 분야에 주목하였다. BBC 드라마는 접근성, 대중성, 흥미성을 만족시키면서도 동시에 고증이 잘 되어 있고 세계사 교육에 적합한 드라마로 판단하였기 때문이다. 그 중에서 역사적 사건 자체만으로도 의미가 있는 산업혁명을 주제로 한 드라마는 「남과 북(North and South)」(2004), 「크랜포드(Cranford)」(2007), 「올리버 트위스트(Oliver Twist)」(2007)가 있다. 이 세 드라마를 분석함으로써 텔레비전 드라마를 통해 산업혁명의 특징이 얼마나 다양하게 그려지고 있는지 살펴보고 그러한 과정을 통해 세계사 역사수업자료로서 드라마가 가지는 가능성에 대해 탐구해 보고자 한다.
