대칭구조를 통한 인간의 양면성

Abstract

예술이란, '실존적 욕망의 궁극적 실현'이다. 욕망이 인간의식의 산물이고 의식은 심리현상의 한 단면이며, 예술은 이러한 잠재적으로 억압된 욕망을 풀어내는 기능을 한다. 즉, 작가로 하여금 예술작품의 창작에 몰입하거나 감상함으로써 일상생활에서의 스트레스를 해소하게 한다. 또한, 예술로 해방된 개인의 욕망은 사회적으로 승화되어 공동체를 결속하는 힘으로 작용한다. 프로이트 이후의 예술은 이러한 심리적인 관점을 중요시한다. 본인 역시 예술을 통해 시각적 사유를 넘어 내면세계의 ‘모호한 관계’와 대면할 수 있는 도구로 시각예술을 선택하였다. 위에서 언급한 심리적 압박감은 현대사회에 더 극적으로 나타난다. 현대사회는 과학기술의 발전과 경제 성장으로 물질적 진보를 얻었지만, 동시에 그 기대감에 비례하는 상대적 박탈감 역시 더욱 커지고 있다. 이러한 현상은 시대흐름에 따른 사회 환경의 변화, 특히 사회적 지위에 부여되는 의미와 가치의 변화로 인해 심화된다. 이는 사회 속에서 자신의 존재감을 드러내고 타인으로부터 인정받고 싶은 욕망에서 기인한다. 자본주의의 속성은 끊임없이 더 많이 갖고 더 높이 올라가기 위한 욕구를 통한 경쟁을 불가피하게 만든다. 이러한 이데올로기는 일상을 지배하는 대중매체의 강력한 영향력으로 인해 즉각적이고 선정적으로 다가온다. 매스미디어는 상상의 영역인 사치, 권력, 부, 사랑, 동경 등을 직접적으로 표현해내면서 인간의 기대를 높임과 동시에, 인간에게 상실감을 안겨 준다. TV와 영화 속 이미지가 현실의 풍경과 별반 다르지 않게 되거나 그 반대의 상황도 지속되면서, 대중은 새로운 볼거리를 향한 무한한 욕망을 갈구하게 되었다. 무엇보다 우리사회를 구성하는 요소는 만인이 같은 이미지를 보게 만드는 전체주의적 시각 환경을 조성하고, 이에 대중을 길들이고 있다. 그 중심에는 신자유주의적인 가치와 상업주의 논리가 숨어있다. 자본과 기술을 무기로 삼은 이미지가 주체할 수 없을 정도로 범람하고 있다. 그리하여 사람들은 개인주의적이면서도 타자의존적인 태도를 취한다. 이러한 인간의 양면적인 태도를 대칭이미지의 양면성으로 빗대어 표현하였다. 본 논문은 인체를 대칭시킨 이미지와 소비사회 메커니즘을 표현한 이미지를 이용하여 그 이상의 메시지나 현상을 연구해보고자 한다. 인간의 모든 활동은 외부 세계를 분석하는 것으로 시작한다. 외부세계를 어떻게 인식하느냐 에서 출발한 인간의 근원적인 욕망연구를 통해 객관적인 인식이 어떻게 작용되는지 알아보고, 객관적 확실성 아래 숨어있는 무의식적 의미를 이해해 볼 것이다. 과학과 이성이 발달한 오늘날에도 과학적 인식을 초월하는 원초적인 인상들, 공감적 집착들, 나른한 몽상들을 제시하였다. 시각이미지 형식으로 표현한 감수성의 이면에는 인간의 원초적이면서 보편적인 유형을 제안하며, 어떤 형태를 보든 그 순간에 섬광처럼 떠오르는 이미지, 즉흥적인 이미지가 인간의 삶의 어디에서 유래하였는지 고찰하고자 하였다. 이는 본인의 창작 작업과 현실 사회를 관찰하고 연구하는 동기부여가 될 것이다.;Art is the ultimate realization of existential desires. Desires are products of human consciousness, and consciousness is an aspect of psychological phenomena. Art disentangles these potentially suppressed desires. In other words, art allows artists to resolve the stress caused by their daily lives, through absorption in the creation or appreciation of artistic works. In addition, individual desires freed by art socially sublimate and work as a force for uniting communities. Artists after Freud have valued such a psychological viewpoint. I also chose visual arts as a tool with which I can face the ‘ambiguous relationships’ of an internal world beyond the visual. The abovementioned psychological pressure appears even more dramatically in modern society. While in our modern society, we have obtained material progress with technological development and economic growth, at the same time, a relative sense of deprivation that is proportional to our sense of expectation is increasing. This situation deepens due to changes in the social environment following the flow of time and the changes of meanings and values granted to social status, in particular. It results from people’s desires to show their existence and be recognized by others. The attributes of capitalism unavoidable create the competition through desires to endlessly have more and to get ever higher. Such an ideology approaches us immediately and sensationally owing to the powerful influence of the mass media that dominates our daily lives. The mass media directly expresses luxury, power, wealth, love and longing, which comprise a territory of the imagination that raises human expectations, and thereby brings a sense of loss to men. As images on TV and cinema become almost the same as the scenery of real life, or vice versa, the public come to have unlimited desires for new things to see. Elements of our society, most of all, create a totalitarian visual environment that makes all people look at the same images, ultimately taming the public. Neo-liberal values and the logic of commercialism are at the center. There are too many Images armed with capital and technologies. As a result, people take both an individualistic and a reliant-on-others position. Such a double-sided attitude was expressed in allusion to the double-sidedness of symmetrical images. This paper aims to study messages or phenomena more than it beginning from images expressing ideologies of modern societies through images making the human body symmetric. All human activities start from analyzing the external world. For this study, I will look into how objective awareness works through studying human desire, starting from how the external world is recognized, and how the unconscious meaning hidden under the objective certainty is understood. Even these days, when science and reason are so developed, basic impressions transcending scientific awareness, empathic obsessions and languid reveries are suggested. Behind the sensitivity expressed in a form of visual images, I suggested basic and universal human archetypes, and tried to grant an ontological status by contemplating from where images, or off-the-cuff images, appear like a flash at the moment of looking at all forms derived in human life. This will motivate me to observe and study my creative works and the actual society we live in.
