기억을 매개로한 장소의 재구성

Abstract

일상은 지극히 개인적인 것에서 대중적인 것에 이르기까지 다양한 모습으로 존재한다. 본인에게 일상의 사소한 사물이나 장소에 의미를 부여하는 일은 자라온 환경 속에서 유발된 애착심에서 연유한다. 유년시절 의식하지 못했던 장소와 개인적 공간에 대한 중요성은 시간과 함께 부각되기 시작하고, 어른이 된 지금 그 가치가 더욱 크게 다가온다. 잦은 이사로 인해 고등학생 이전의 시기는 기억은 나지만 연속되지 않는 기억으로 그저 기억의 파편일 뿐이다. 그 시기의 기억은 나열된 사진 속에서만이 의미를 찾는다. 사진에 담긴 기억에 근거하여 추론해보면, 자신을 표현해 줄 수 있는 것은 곧 소유하고 있는 사소한 사물들이다. 과거의 사물과 공간이 지금의 ‘나’를 만들어왔듯, 지금의 사물과 공간은 다시 ‘나’를 재구성하고 있을 것이기 때문이다. ‘나’의 취향 안에서 선택 받은 것인 동시에 ‘나’의 취향에 영향을 주고, ‘나’의 현재 관심사를 드러내며 나아가 ‘나’의 가치까지 생성한다. 즉 소유물은 기억이자 기억하는 방법이기도 하다. 작업의 키워드 중에서 기억은 가장 큰 의미를 지니는데, 과거 경험은 ‘지금’과 상호 유기적 관계를 맺으며 시시각각 의미가 변하는, 열려있는 시간이기 때문이다. 게다가 일상의 이미지들에 의해 기억은 끊임없이 자극받으며 나를 돌아보게 하고, 이전과는 다른 시각으로 타인을 인식하게 한다. 사물이 사람과 동등한 추억의 가치를 지닐 수 있다고 믿는 믿음은(오로지 과거의 기억이나 추억의 가치임을 말한다. 인간과 사물의 가치가 같다는 말이 아니다.) 시간이 흐르며 그것이 가진 가치와 표현의 한계성을 이유로 점차 장소에까지 확장되었다. 하나의 장소를 거대 사물로 인식하는 것은 애초의 시작이 공간 및 장소에서부터가 아닌 사물에서 시작되었음을 의미한다. 거소(居所)의 개념을 가진 공간은 안전하지만 떠나는 순간부터 불안할 수밖에 없는 심리적인 경계를 가지고 있다. 문턱을 넘어서 한발자국만 나아가면 더 이상 그곳은 ‘나’의 영역이 아닌 것이다. 반면에 장소는 심리적인 안정감을 표출할 수 있는 곳으로, 공간은 개인적인 의미에 둘러싸여 장소로 발전한다. ‘미지의 공간, 부유하는 섬’ 의 연작에서 볼 수 있듯이 하늘로 띄워진 공간은 평온함과 함께 그 경계에서 오는 불안한 심리를 표출한다. 본인의 작업들은 이러한 개인적인 의미부여의 성격이 강한 장소감에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 기억 속에서 장소감이 어떻게 획득되었으며, 어떤 방법으로 다시 재구성되었는지가 본 논문이 밝힐 주된 내용이다. 본 논문은 사물과 장소에 관계된 본인의 작업들을 설명하며 의미화 과정을 통하여 그것의 주체성, 또한 본인의 자의식을 실현하고자 한다. 기억을 매개로 또 다른 가치가 생성된 사물과 장소는 그것이 실제로 의미하는 것 이상이 될 수 있다.;Many things about us are revealed in our daily lives in diverse ways by the way we adopt various styles or forms that are personal or popular. The way I impart meanings to trivial objects or places in my day-to-day life is derived from attachments I have to the environment where I grew up. The importance of places and personal spaces that I wasn’t fully aware of in my childhood grows as time goes by and now the meanings have great significance. I remember what happened around me before my high school years, but due to frequently moving to different places the memories don’t flow consecutively and only exist in broken pieces. And those memories’ meanings are only found in pictures. Inferring from the memories that those pictures provide, what often expresses me are trivial objects that I have possessed. Past objects and spaces, having made what ‘I’ am now, current objects and space reconstruct ‘me’. They are selected by ‘my’ taste, affect ‘my’ taste simultaneously, reveal what ‘I’ am interested in and furthermore, create values of ‘myself’. In short, one’s possessions are memories as well as the way to remember things with. Among keywords of my work, memory has the most important meaning because past experience has a mutual organic relationship with ‘now’ and with the passing of time its meanings change constantly. Furthermore, being stimulated by images in my day-to-day life, memories let me reflect on myself and recognize others from different points of view. The belief that objects can have the value of memories that are equivalent to those of humans (it doesn’t mean that humans and objects have the same value and in this case, the values of memories are only derived from past ones.) has been progressively expanded to places because objects have limitations in their ability to express memories and limitations in the value of the memory itself. Perceiving one place as a big object means that the beginning originally starts not from a space or place but from an object. A space that embraces the concept of home lets people feel safe when they are there, but from the moment they leave there, it starts to have psychological boundaries that people cannot help but feel, which is a sense of anxiety. In other words, the moment I take just one step outside my home, it is no longer ‘my’ territory. On the other hand, place is where your psychological sense of stability can be expressed and space surrounded by personal meanings evolves to place. As seen in the series ‘Unknown space, Floating island’, space floating in the sky expresses not only peacefulness but also a sense of insecurity felt from the (lack of) boundaries. My work focuses on a sense of place which has the key characteristic of infusing meanings. This paper will mainly present how the sense of place is acquired in memories and how it is reconstructed. This paper endeavors to explain my work related to objects and places and to realize their subjectivity and my self-consciousness through the signifying process. Objects and places provided with new values by the medium of memories can be more than what they actually mean.
