한국 은행권을 통한 문양디자인 연구

Abstract

Patterns were developed from the beginning of mankind due to the endless desire for beauty and as a symbol for communication. Also, as generations passed, patterns started to take on various symbolic meanings and through further decorative activities they were developed into forms that had special shapes. Korea’s traditional patterns reflect symbolic formative signs that express the collectivity of the Korean people found in their values and emotions as well as the aesthetic of their shamanistic sentiment. Based on such historical background of the Korean people, patterns which have symbolic meaning were used for conveying messages. As globalization accelerates, Korea needs to develop its traditional patterns into cultural contents that can be used as new communication symbols. Creating designs that use Korea’s traditional patterns which incorporate the indigenousness and originality of the Korean culture could become the most effective strategy in establishing Korea’s national image in this global era. Therefore, this research aims at designing new cultural contents by reflecting geometric traditional pattern of Korea as well as the geometrical symbolism of Korea’s notes (bills), which integrates much of Korea’s culture in their design. This research on new symbols will focus on creating an open art piece that produces various meanings (which are not intended by the designer) through relationship with the audience, and on providing and inducing the opportunity to re-interpret the meaning of signs. The research was focused on the following; First, the concept and geometric traditional patterns, symbolism of patterns, and their implications were researched via documentations. Second, based on the function and history of notes, the symbolism and formative factors of note design were studied and researched. Third, according to the above content, an art piece was designed which reflects the modern interpretation of money and geometric traditional pattern as well as their implications. Through the research, the following results were reached. First, based on the analysis of traditional and modern symbolic signs, the implications of patterns were researched, and a design to enable Korea’s traditional culture to communicate with the world as well as modern people who pursue their unique personality was created. Second, through this research, the symbolism and design of notes were studied, and based on various usage of South Korea’s 10,000 won note (the most representative note of Korea) opportunities for new interpretation were identified. Also, this thesis provides the basis for studying the relation between background pattern and traditional pattern of Korean notes as there is almost no analysis on this. Third, based on the result retrieved from the above studies this research provides an opportunity to have a new perspective on tradition and extends the concept of pattern design, which was previously limited. This research provided me a good opportunity to create a piece that overcame the limitations in design due to simply repeating the traditional patterns and expressed the fundamental meaning and symbols of traditional patterns. I hope that this research and development contributes to expanding the scope of pattern design as a new cultural content adequate for today’s society that emphasizes the power of sentiment, creativity and culture as well as for modern people that regard originality and differentiation importantly.;문양은 미(美)에 대한 끊임없는 욕구와 의미전달의 기호로서 인류의 시작과 함께 발달하였다. 또한, 세대를 거쳐 다양한 상징적 의미를 부여 받고 꾸밈의 작업을 통해 특징적 형태를 형성한다. 우리 문양에는 민족의 집단적인 가치 감정이 표출된 상징적인 조형 기호와 인간의 주술적인 정서를 상징하는 미의식이 반영되어 있다. 이러한 배경을 기초로 하여 문양이 갖는 상징성은 의미전달의 기능을 한다. 세계화가 가속화 되고 있는 지금 한국만의 문화적 특수성을 나타내는 새로운 의사소통의 기호로서 문화 콘텐츠를 개발이 필요하다. 전통문양이 갖고 있는 우리 문화의 고유성과 독창성을 활용한 디자인이 글로벌시대에 국가이미지 구축을 위한 가장 효과적인 전략이 될 수 있다. 따라서 풍부한 한국의 문화유산 가운데 기하학적 전통문양과 한국의 문화가 집약적으로 디자인된 상징물인 화폐가 갖는 기호학적 상징성을 재조명하여 새로운 문화 콘텐츠를 디자인하고자 한다. 새로운 기호로서의 본 연구는 작품의 수용자와의 관계를 통해 연구자가 의도하지 않은 다양한 의미의 생산을 일으키는 열린 작품을 제작하고, 기호의 재해석 가능성의 자리를 제공•유도하는 작품을 제작하는데 의의를 둔다. 본 연구는 다음과 같은 방법으로 진행되었다. 첫째, 기하학적 전통문양의 개념과 문양의 상징성, 그리고 그 의미작용 대해 문헌을 통해 연구한다. 둘째, 화폐의 기능과 역사를 바탕으로 화폐가 갖는 상징성과 화폐디자인의 조형요소에 대해 조사•연구를 한다. 셋째, 위의 내용을 통해 돈과 기하학적 전통문양의 현대적 재해석과 의미작용에 관한 작품 제작을 한다. 이러한 연구과정을 통하여 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 전통과 현대의 상징기호 분석을 바탕으로 문양이 어떻게 의미 작용하는지 연구하여 개성을 추구하는 현대인들, 나아가 세계와 우리전통문화가 어떻게 소통할 수 있는 지에 대해 생각해 볼 수 있는 디자인을 개발 하였다. 둘째, 이번 연구를 통해 화폐의 상징성과 디자인에 대해 고찰해 보며 한국의 대표 은행권인 만 원권이 갖는 상징을 사용자의 다양한 사용사례에 따라 새로운 해석의 가능성이 발생 할 수 있는 기회를 제시하였으며 분석사례가 거의 없는 은행권의 바탕문양과 전통문양의 관계를 재조명하는데 발판을 제공하였다. 셋째, 이와 같은 결과를 통해 기존에 한정되어 있던 패턴디자인 개념의 범위를 넓히고 전통에 대한 새로운 시각을 갖게 되는 계기를 마련하였다. 본 연구를 통해 기존 전통의 답습에 그쳤던 디자인적 한계를 넘어 문양의 근본적인 의미와 상징을 나타내고 표현 할 수 있는 제품을 만들 수 있는 좋은 기회가 되었다. 본 연구•개발은 독창성과 차별성을 중시하는 현대인과 감성•창조•문화의 힘이 강조되는 사회풍토에 맞는 새로운 문화 콘텐츠 로서 패턴 디자인의 영역확장에 기여하고자 하였다.
