Abstract
A water quality modeling study was performed on the Nakdong river system, using the QUAL2K model. The Nakdong River, which is one of four major river systems in Korea, serves as an important water resource for the south eastern area. The river drains an area of 23,384.21 square kilometers and length of the main stream is over 510.36 kilometers. The USEPA’s QUAL2E model was selected as a best available one for use in the Nakdong River. Several limitations of the QUAL2E model, however, have been reported. One of the major inadequacies of the QUAL2E model is the lack of provision for conversion of algal death to BOD, which is autochthonous source of organic matter. Since the algal bloom is an important phenomenon found in downstream area, this inadequacy of the model should be repaired to simulate the water quality dynamics in the Nakdong River. Therefore, modifications were made in the computer code to overcome such limitations and the modified version was named as QUAL2K by Park and Lee(2002). The major enhancements of the QUAL2K model include the expansion of computational structure and the addition of new constituent interactions, such as algal BOD, denitrification, and DO change caused by fixed plant. The main purpose of this study is to determine autochthonous BOD and denitrification in the Nakdong river system using QUAL2K model. In the QUAL2K model, the river was divided into 321 reaches and 1742 elements. The size of theses element was chosen to be 1.0 kilometer. The Model was calibrated with data for the April and May in 2007 survey, and was verified the June, July and August data in 2007 survey. The water quality parameters calibrated and verified in the QUAL2K model are BOD(Biochemical Oxygen Demand), NH_(3)-N(Ammonia Nitrogen), NO_(3)-N(Nitrate Nitrogen), T-N(Total Nitrogen), T-P(Total Phosphorus), Chl-a(Chlorophyll a). The model results were in reasonable agreements with the field measurements in both calibration and verification. The validated model was utilized to determine autochthonous BOD and denitrification in Nakdong river system. The simulation results of Nakdong river system analysis indicated that autochthonous BOD and denitrification is lowest at upstream and they are increased as it moves to downstream. The increasement of autochthonous BOD shows proportional relationship with river travel times. Also, the denitrification is getting increased as the water level is deeper in downstream. From this study, it was concluded that QUAL2K model could successfully simulate the water quality of Nakdong river system. At the moment, Nakdong river is under construction government’s Four Major Rivers Restoration Project. As the matter of fact, successful simulation of the river system in this study is expected to be a useful tool for comparison of the quality of river before and after of the project.
