Abstract
Due to the trend of large and high-rise buildings, use of high strength concrete has become popularized in order to increase the structural performance. Generally, concrete has low thermal conductivity and thermal diffusion coefficient compared to other structural materials and shows excellent energy dissipation capacity till full collapse providing sufficient time for the people to evacuate the building when exposed to fire. However, high strength concrete shows relatively low fire resistance capacity compared to normal strength concrete. Especially, spalling is occurred as significant damage of high strength concrete under high temperature. Thus, consideration of spalling phenomenon and accurate understanding of thermal and structural behaviors of high strength concrete is necessary to prevent structural damage due to fire. In this study, effects of various design factors on thermal behaviors of high strength concrete columns under high temperature are observed. The studied parameters are sizes of cross sectional area, cover thickness, reinforcement arrangements, steel ratios, fire characteristics, and concrete strengths. Temperature distributions and area/weight loss are measured from the fire experiments and compared between different specimens. Moreover, Finite Element Analysis is performed by using ABAQUS version 6.10 to propose analytical method that can be used to predict the temperature distributions in high strength concrete members. The FE models include temperature dependent thermal properties of high strength concrete under high temperature and the area loss measured from the experiments. Experimental results show that higher temperature with larger spalling is occurred on the larger column section, smaller cover thickness, smaller space between reinforcements, larger steel ratios, higher rate of temperature rise of the fire curve, and finally larger concrete strength. The proposed analytical results are in good agreements with the experimental results which proves the validity of the analysis method proposed in this study. Due to the method's reliability, parametric study is performed additionally to investigate the effects of cross sectional areas and reinforcement arrangements on thermal behaviors of high strength concrete.
