Hormonal correlates of sexual behaviors in captive Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana)

Abstract

황금원숭이는 일반적으로 야생과 사육상태 모두에서 연중 교미를 하는 것이 관찰되지만 9-11월 사이에 대부분의 교미가 집중되며(교미기), 3-5월 사이에 출산을 하는 계절번식 동물이다. 교미기와 출산기 사이 교미가 거의 없는 기간을 ‘비교미기’라 칭한다. 기존에 진행된 황금원숭이에 대한 연구는 교미기에 있어서 암컷의 에스트라디올이 암컷의 성행동을 조절한다는 것을 보였다. 하지만 사회적 상황 또는 환경의 변화가 호르몬과 행동에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구는 아직 미흡하다. 교미기와 비교미기에 따라 성행동이 어떻게 달라지는지, 또한 성행동과 호르몬 사이에 어떠한 상관관계가 있는지 알아보기 위하여 진행된 본 연구는 경기도 용인시 에버랜드 동물원에서 사육되고 있는 한 그룹의 황금원숭이를 대상으로 수행되었다. 연구초기에는 성체 수컷 1마리, 아성체 수컷 1마리, 암컷 2마리가 있었으나 3번의 무리 구성원 변화가 있었다. 본 연구에서는 교미기와 비교미기를 각각 3개월씩 포함하는 2008년 9월부터 2009년 2월까지 행동관찰을 진행하였으며, 2008년 10월 말부터 약 2-3일 간격으로 4개월간 분변시료를 채취하였다. 방사면역측정법을 이용하여 분변내에 잔류하는 스테로이드 호르몬인 에스트라디올, 프로게스테론 수치를 분석한 결과, 교미기의 한 암컷의 에스트라디올 수치가 교미유혹행동, 교미행동과 유의미하게 일치하여 나타나는 것을 알 수 있었다. 비교미기인 12월부터 1월의 경우, 이 암컷의 교미행동과 교미유혹행동, 에스트라디올의 수치가 모두 낮게 유지되었다. 그러나 우두머리 수컷이 아성체 수컷과 교체된 후, 한 마리의 암컷에게서 교미 유혹행동이 다시 급격히 증가하기 시작했으며, 교체 후 약 10-14일이 지난 시점에 이 암컷의 에스트라디올의 수치가 급격히 증가하였다. 이 결과는 황금원숭이 암컷이 계절번식에 관계없이 무리 구성원 또는 사회적 상황의 변화에 따라 성행동을 조절할 수 있으며, 이러한 성행동은 에스트라디올과 밀접한 연관관계가 있다는 것을 제시한다.;Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys are generally seasonal breeders in the wild and in captivity, although copulation can occur throughout the year. Previous studies suggest that estradiol modulates female sexual behavior during the mating season. However, the details of the relationship between hormones and behavior and the effects of social context have not been fully explored. I studied the relationship between sexual behaviors and physiology in a group of captive Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys in the Everland Zoo, South Korea. The study group contained one adult male, one subadult male, and two females at the beginning of the study, but group composition changed several times during the study. I compared female behavior and sex hormone levels during the mating and non-mating seasons to see how hormone levels differ in different seasons and to assess how hormone levels are related to behavior. I collected behavioral data for 6 months and fecal samples at 2-3-day intervals for 4 months spanning the mating and non-mating seasons, and analyzed hormone levels in the fecal samples via radioimmunoassay. I found clear periodic solicitation peaks by the adult female in the mating season, which perfectly corresponded with copulation peaks. During the part of the mating season from which fecal samples were collected, female solicitation and copulation peaks also corresponded to sharp peaks in estradiol levels. One female also displayed peaks in solicitations, copulations, and estradiol 10-14 days after a male replacement, despite the fact that this replacement occurred three months after the end of the mating season. Our results suggest that females may modify their behavior in response to changes in their social group and that estradiol levels are closely related to sexual behaviors in Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys.
