This thesis reconsiders nine sacred cantatas, which were composed by Johann Sebastian Bach from April to May in 1725 based on a strategic collaboration with a female scripter Christiane Marianne von Ziegler, and Coffee Cantata with the perspective of women. Bach based these compositions on a script by Ziegler who was not famous at that time. It was taboo for a female person to express her opinion in Leipzig church where Lutheranism was strong. Hence, it is quite remarkable that Bach composed a religious Cantata based on a script written by a woman, since Cantatas served as confession at center of the Mass for many Germans who were Lutheran. The distinguishable characteristics of Ziegler's script are the following: First, Ziegler’s libretti was more faithful than others written by male scripters who offered them to Bach. Second, it was more tender and sensitive. Third, Ziegler wrote about the voice she could not use, and the silence she was forced to endure because of her gender. The words, voice, and silence show her attention to right of self-expression, and her faith that the voice is common and equal to all human beings. In this regard, Bach used the theme of word and silence in various ways in many movements. Therefore in this thesis, the relationship between music and lyrics will be analyzed in the context of a woman's voice, and focusing on the movements of words and silences. In Ziegler-Bach pieces, 'words' and 'silences' are shown more often than other pieces where Bach cooperated with male scripters. Bach showed musical diversity by using a different approach from other Cantatas in the movements where 'words' and 'silences' are used, for it would be based on 'different lyrics' which came from a female scripter. Ziegler finally found the 'words’ (voice) in the Cantata with Bach. She enhanced the women's movement in literature after publishing a script book with her own name, as suggested by Gottsched, the chairperson of the German Literary Society. Ziegler kept practicing in a weekly magazine with Gottsched under a pen name, and she was also a proponent of woman's education. And by learning prosody and prosaism from Gottsched, Ziegler became a laureate in literary society which was run mainly by men. Furthermore, while doing all of this, Ziegler ran a salon on her own. Because literature was the main part of salon culture, Ziegler was able to cultivate her ability. But her activities were not welcomed by the male-dominated society. In 1735, when the gender conflict for women's rights to education was raised, Bach unveiled the gender conflict by composing the Cantata. He made known his position of agreeing with women's rights with this Cantata. Katherine R. Goodman determined that the time when Bach composed this Cantata was at the peak of the women's movement to claim their rights. Gottsched was not supportive of Ziegler's movement because of the backlash from male-dominated society, but Bach was unwavering in his support. Bach gave Ziegler a chance to start speaking with her voice through music and he kept his position until the end.-
