Abstract
Through family pictures of multi-cultural families, this study is focused to review rapid increase in number of international marriages and societal viewpoints about it. Foreigners residing in the country are now more than 1.15 million, and the last year’s statistics indicate that twenty-five thousands of foreigners from forty-eight countries were naturalized as Koreans. The Korea society called as a white-clad race or a single race nation has been acknowledged their race and citizens as reunification categories, but now is stepping into a multi-cultural society rapidly. As the number of immigrants are increasing through various channels such as an industrial training system since 1993, international marriages in religion, employment in the country and studying abroad system, it is expected that in 2020, one of five persons who are less than twenty years old will be a child from multi-cultural families. I had quit writing a thesis and spent time for marriage life, children and a studio business. The reason why I am now interested in multi-cultural families are because I have been received many clients coming to Korea for international marriages. A client from Yanji in China came to the studio to take an ID picture after employed by a restaurant. Another client from China asked me to compose photos of her and her husband who are living away from her to mail certificates indicating that her and her husband had a good marriage relationship. Some old bachelors stop by the studio to take profile pictures for international marriages. I have recognized that these happens not only in news, newspaper and rural areas, but also in places nearby us. Above all, I had been strongly interested in multi-cultural families when a multi-cultural family visited the studio one day to take a baby’s first anniversary pictures. I felt awkward when seeing the couple who cannot communicate well to each other became the one and enjoyed taking pictures of their baby. On the other hand, I was curious that how this baby would get along with Korea children. Even if spouses coming from other countries cannot communicate with other people in Korea, they are same as Korean mothers in a way trying to raise their child by pouring all of their efforts. Even though it was not easy for me to write a thesis, this provided me a motivation to write the thesis again. By filming family pictures in stepping into their lives and placing myself in their cultures, I will discuss how they get along with Korean cultures through pictures. For study method and contents, it will be based on precedent studies. I will show you how the international marriages began, and what happens in forming multi-culture families. Many women from all over the world get married with Korean men. Among them, I will specifically discuss in thesis marriages with Philippians. Also, Philippine cultures will be shown. Female immigrants from Philippines reside in Korea and attend multi-cultural family support centers or welfare support centers. While they get familiar with Korea by learning Korean and being trained with Korean culture and sense, their Korean husbands have few opportunities to learn their spouses’ culture and sense. To resolve conflicts in life, it is important to learn each other’s cultures. In addition, the thesis discusses about the meaning that family pictures provide with and explains about documentary pictures. For the reference authors of my works, I selected Joo-Young Yoon, a previous politician of Korea and a photographer of documentaries. 『Happy children』, a picture book published in 2001, let me remind of what families mean. I was also able to refer many things in working on my thesis. To produce the work for this thesis, it was done with digital camera and developed films with computer and ink jet printer. The reason I have selected this technique is that digital is fast in processing, convenient in use and financially effective. The best thing to use digital camera is that it allows people to check out pictures right after taking them and makes people to feel intimate when talking and smiling about pictures. For multi-cultural families, photographers asking for their family history are aliens. However, through digital cameras, they allow aliens to come into their lives. It is some kind of a passport. It is not too much to say that digital cultures are 21 century’s fruits and spiritual ruler. The cultural code of 21 century and the digital works for multi-cultural families are a matter of great import for me in showing how I move forward, and it will also be a basis for my future works.
