서기원 소설의 주체 연구

Abstract

꾸준하고 다채로운 작품 활동에도 서기원에 관한 연구는 초기에 한정되어 전후 문학을 중심으로 다루어진다. 게다가 초기작품에 대한 평가 역시 대부분 패배주의와 허무주의라는 일반론으로 귀결되는 모습을 보이면서 전체 작품 세계와 작가 의식에 대한 포괄적이고 심도 깊은 논의는 제대로 이루어지지 않는 것이 사실이다. 따라서 본고는 기존의 연구사에서 제외되었던 다양한 작품들을 살펴보고 부조리한 현실을 직시하면서 지배 이데올로기에 따른 주체화를 과감히 거부하는 정치적 주체들을 서기원 소설 속에서 발견하고자 한다. 정치적 주체는 근대적 코기토나 탈근대의 해체적 주체와 차별화 되는 독특한 형태를 지닌다. 단순히 사회 구조가 낳은 수동적 결과물 혹은 합리성을 무기로 한 절대적 존재라는 이분법적 논리에서 벗어나 존재하는 정치적 주체들은 현실의 모순을 현실 밖이 아닌 바로 현실을 지탱하는 이데올로기의 내부에서 찾아낸다. 그들은 이데올로기적 모순과의 대면을 시도하며 상징적 질서를 어긋나게 하는 행위를 감행하는 능동적이고 적극적인 주체인 것이다. 지젝은 이를 실재를 마주하면서 환상을 횡단하는, 이데올로기적 동일시가 실패하는 지점으로 정의하며 랑시에르는 치안/통치에 반대하며 기존의 경직된 질서에 불일치를 도입하고 새로운 자리 옮김을 제시하는 불화적 존재로 명명한다. 덧붙여서 서기원 작품 속 정치적 주체의 규명에 있어서 지배 이데올로기를 비껴가는 탈주적 몸들은 정치성을 표출하고 행위를 가능케 하는 중요한 매개체로 작용하고 있음을 밝힌다. Ⅱ장에서는 전쟁을 의미 있는 현실로 구조화하기 위해 폭력을 용인하고 묵인하는 전쟁 이데올로기를 배경으로 몸의 발견을 통한 생존 주체를 제시한다. 무조건적인 적이 되어 무자비한 살상과 살육이 강요되는 현실 안에서 주체들은 생생한 동물적 몸을 확인한다. 그 순간들은 바로 폭력의 극대성과 전쟁의 빈약한 논리를 노출하는 지점이 된다. 또한 살아있는 자기 몸을 증명해 주는 배설은 죽음만이 허락된 전쟁 논리를 거부하는 생산적 행위로 이해할 수 있다. 고백의 서사는 열린 결말과 연결되면서 현실에의 도피가 아닌 괴로운 진실 안에서의 몸부림치는 가능 태로서 작동한다. Ⅲ장에서는 현실의 모든 영역과 욕망을 자본이라는 단 하나의 체제로 포획하는 자본 이데올로기를 배경으로 몸의 지각을 통한 성찰 주체를 제시한다. 자본주의는 오직 화폐의 가치를 전제로 한 등가의 교환만을 인정하며 예외 없이 모든 것을 자본으로 환원한다. 표면적으로는 현실에 순응한 듯 보이지만 항상 불편함과 초조함을 지닌 주체의 분열적인 몸의 동요(動搖)는 자본의 비인간성과 물질성을 간파한다. 일탈적 히스테리는 자본주의의 안일한 일상에 대한 파괴적 충동으로 완벽해 보이는 자본 이데올로기적 환상을 흔들고 무너뜨린다. 아이러니의 서사와 암시적 결말은 은유적으로 현실을 고발하는 장치가 된다. Ⅳ장에서는 현 체제의 안정적 유지를 옹호하며 서로의 이권 다툼에만 골몰하는 통치 이데올로기를 배경으로 몸의 실천을 통한 개혁 주체를 제시한다. 자신들의 몫에만 관심을 두는 통치 이데올로기는 권력의 소유와 이행에 불과하며 밖에 있는 부분들을 억압하고 배제하면서 자신들의 자리를 보존한다. 주체의 투쟁적 몸은 통치 이데올로기의 고정된 세계에 불일치를 도입한다. 권력의 유무가 아닌 자신의 신념을 끝까지 밀고 나가는 투신은 새로운 질서의 지향을 촉구한다. 전기적 서사와 닫힌 결말은 주체들을 희생양이나 영웅으로 미화하거나 격하시키지 않으며 실패로서의 완료가 아닌 집념 어린 삶의 지속으로서 주체들을 긍정하고 있다. 서기원은 사회에 내재된 모순을 정확히 읽어내면서 현실 밖이 아닌 안에서 치열하게 살아가는 주체를 그려낸다. 서기원의 작품 세계를 주체라는 통일된 관점으로 바라보는 본 연구는 우선 부정적으로만 다루어졌던 인물들을 도발적 저항을 가능케 하는 정치적 주체로 되살리고, 예외적 몸들을 정치적 행위와 전복 성을 내포한 적극적 개념으로 읽어냄으로써 의의를 갖는다. 또한 저 평가 되었던 후기 역사소설을 새롭게 독해할 수 있는 계기를 마련하여 서기원 작품에 대한 차별화 되고 새로운 관점을 제공할 수 있을 것이다.;Instead of steady and various working, studies for Seo, Kiwon is limited in only his early time, focusing on postwar literature. Moreover most of the evaluations for his early works are concluded into defeatism and nihilism as generality, and inclusive and in-depth discussion for his whole literature world and conscious as a writer are not performed properly. Therefore, I focus on various works excluded from previous studies and try to find political subjects rejecting dominant ideology drastically with intuition in unreasonable reality from Seo's novels. Political subject has a unique form which is distinguished from modern Cogito or disjoint subject of post-modernity. Beyond just passive results from social structure or dichotomy logic as the absolute being with rationality, existing political subjects find irony of ideology from inside of ideology supporting reality, not from outside. They are active and positive subjects who try to face ideological irony and go through actions being out of symbolic orders. Zizek made definition this as a point to fail ideologic identification crossing facing real, and Ranciere refused police, introduced discordance to previous rigid order and nominated discordant being with suggesting new translocation. In addition, for nomination of political subjects in Seo's works, I examined that escaping bodies, with ling aslant dominant ideology, appling as critical media to express 'the political' and make possible acts. In chapter Ⅱ, to organize war as meaningful reality, I suggested survived subject with finding of bodies based on war ideology which approved and overlooked violence. Subjects find vivid animal bodies in reality with merciless murder and slaughter forced by being unconditioned enemy. And that moment became the point to reveal maximized violence and weak logic of war. Also, the excretion which proves survived body itself can be regarded as productive act rejecting war logic which allows only death. The epic of confession is liking to opened ending and operate as possible voice struggling in horrible truth, not getaway. In chapter Ⅲ, I suggest critical subject by perception of body with capital ideology which captures all the domains and desires as only one system. Capitalism accepts only commutative contract based on the value of currency only, and all the other things revert to capital. This seemed to be adjust to capital ideology ostensibly, but the agitation of divided body of subject with usual inconvenience and anxiety penetrates impersonality and corporeality of capital. Deviant hysteria shakes and destroys fantasy of capital ideology to be seemed perfect from destructive impulse about life of ease of capitalism. Irony, epics and suggestive endings become devices to accuse ideology metaphorically. In chapter Ⅳ, with protections for stable maintenance of system now, I suggest innovation of subject through operation of body based on police ideology focusing on considering for advantages of each one. police ideology which has interests in only their portion is only possession and operation of power and reserves their status with aggression & excluding things outside. Struggling body of subject introduces discordance to fixed world of police ideology. Struggling which forces its way for its belief, not for power's existence or not, demands orientation for new order. Biographical epics and closed endings don't glorify nor downgrade subjects as victims or heroes, affirm them as continuous life with tenacity not as accomplishment of failure. Seo read the irony of intrinsic society exactly and described subjects living with struggles in the real world, not outside of that. This study has a unified point of view for Seo's literature world as subjects revive political subject with making it possible for character's provocative resistance, who were always thought negatively, and read exceptional bodies as positive conceptions including political actions and rollover. Moreover, I made an opportunity for his late historical novels undervalued to be interpreted newly, in order to provide new and distinguished point of view for Seo's works.
