Abstract
Nowadays, both schools and societies in Korea have focused on the improvement of communicative competence. Naturally, there has been a growing interest in the role of corrective feedback through interaction between a teacher and learners in various learning contexts. A number of studies have shown that corrective feedback is associated with L2 learning in class. However, learners in class do not have many chances to speak in English and correct their utterance. There are many learners so that teachers cannot give feedback to each learner in person. As one of the alternatives providing Korean learners with more opportunities to speak in English, learning English via phone is becoming more popular. Based on some studies that feedback types can be different according to learner's characteristics and learning context. Present study examines patterns of corrective feedback and learners' uptake according to learners' error types and proficiency levels in a telephone conversation context. For this purpose, 90 recordings of 10-minute English conversation classes were extracted, totaling 900 minutes of recorded data. Total nine adult learners along with three Philippine teachers participated. The recordings were repeatedly examined by the researcher and verified once again by a second examiner. At First, the learner's error types were analyzed based on 4 categories; phonological error, lexical error, morphosyntatic error and semantic error. Then, teacher's corrective feedback types were distributed into explicit correction, recast, clarification request, metalinguistic feedback, repetition and elicitation as it was categorized by Lyster and Ranta(1997). Lastly, learner uptake and immediate revision of error were examined. The results of this study are as follows. First, regardless of their proficient level, the most occurred error types among learners were morphosyntactic error. The other error types were a little different across the proficiency level. Second, explicit correction and recast were the predominant type of feedback used in a telephone conversation context. As the feature of these feedbacks that a teacher provides the correct form to learners, telephone English lessons in this study were mainly led by a teacher. The other types of feedback were differently provided according to learners' proficiency level. Third, the percentage of learner's uptake and revision were differed from learners' error types and corrective feedback types. The rate of learners uptake was shown much higher than the results of previous studies conducted in the classrooms. However, the rate of revision followed only 41.3%. This result can be interpreted that one-to-one lesson via phone could allow learners to notice teacher's feedback easily with resulting in high rates of uptake. However, there are still some limitations that make learners correct their errors. Therefore, teachers should provide strategic feedback, considering learners' proficiency level and learning context. With respect to the relationship between the error type and uptake across the proficiency level, all types of feedback on error were equally effective in leading to learner uptake but only 40 percent of these uptake revised their errors. The highest rate of repair occurred with the feedback on phonological errors. Followings are feedbacks on morphosyntactic, lexical and semantic errors. Regarding to the relationship between types of corrective feedback and learner uptake, the highest rates of learner uptake and revision occurred with explicit correction and recast. Considering the fact that recast made learners have a tendency of answering yes or okay, instead of correcting their errors, teachers should be careful of using question tag like 'okay?' or 'right?'. Also, implicit types of feedback(clarification requests, metaliguistic feedback, repetition and elicitation) which did not provide relatively much in this study, also led to over 90 percent of uptake. It means that these implicit feedbacks also can be beneficial for learners to correct their errors by themselves. And it would be interesting to deal with learner's effective factors that they have some difficulty in uptake on teacher's feedback in detail in later studies. In conclusion, This study presented that the relationship between teacher's feedback and learner's uptake could be different according to learners' error types and proficiency levels in telephone English lessons. Through this study, teachers who work in private English institutions like phone English companies would understand how to use strategic feedback in a more effective way according to learners’ levels and learning context. Lastly, this study could be helpful for developing a new learning method in Korea.
