Abstract
Ecologism and environmentalism, emerging as global issues arise from the scientific bias. In the real world, where the reconsideration of the viewpoints, undervalued by the reason of the irrationality is required, the arts have to aim to realize the overall views on the things which are visible or not visible through a work, and through this, enable the audience to ruminate the nostalgia about the times of an archetype when human being and the nature were balanced in the harmony between rationality and irrationality. And looking back on the past as material for creative work will also make sense in this context. Therefore, this study aims to examine the functions and values of the rites that encompass the past and the present, reality and unreality and then based upon this materials, create a dance work 「Ritual as A transition」 and then examine the expressional features. For this, the elements, containing the meaning, functions and symbolism of the rites and the literatures regarding 'the pattern of Rites of Passage by Arnold van Gennep', were studied. And the video on Rites of passage was viewed and the sites of shamanism were investigated in order to create a dance work 「Ritual as A transition」. It was performed at Gymnasium Hall 1, Ewha Women's University on 17th June, 2010, and this was analyzed in the aspects of floor pattern, the qualities of movement and the use of props. The themes of the work are the pain, anxiety of the modern people, due to excessive desires, and the journey of inner selves, overcoming these and advancing toward more advanced selves. 'The Pattern of Rites of Passage by Arnold van Gennep' was used for the text for the development of the themes in order to divide the chapters, and the expression was developed especially being focused in the process of the transition. In Chapter 1, A man who were engulfed in desires, alienates himself from the reality and sunk into the chaos, existing in his own inner world, was described. In chapter 2, The man, entering into the ritual space where dailiness was eliminated, experienced the process of intensifying conflict with unstable spirits, the reincarnation of his own greed and fear, and the process, led to the symbolic death for the transcendence, were embodied through solo and group dance. In Chapter 3, the process that both the revengeful spirits and self are integrated in harmony and reborn as 'new myself', was described. The features of the expressions of dance work 「Ritual as A transition」, realized in this configuration of the scenes are 3 as follows. Firstly, it is the expression of the roles of solo and group and the relationship between them like the both sides of a coin. In work, solo is human in real world. It appeared from the start and experienced the process through separation-transition-incorporation. Group dance, existing only in the space of transition, was surreal existence and paradoxical existence, giving long lasting pain, symbolic death and new birth to human being. Therefore, it tried to express the negative being through confrontational structure with solo and a gesture as if it extorted something, and also tried to express the creation as 'a holiness' through the floor patterns. In terms of the main qualities of the movement, solo is introspective, limited and its transfer of the meaning is direct. In contrast with the former, group dance has a extrovert inclination of being large and lively and its way of the transfer of the meaning is abstract. Meanwhile, the props, as the object symbolizing the desire of human beings, play a pivotal role in the confrontation between solo and group dance. Secondly, it is an expression of the inner journey of separation, transition, incorporation. Because of this, the movement qualities of solo and group gradually change. They were initially opposed to each other but in the second half of Chapter 2, some movements of solo and group dance are exchanged each other and in Chapter 3, solo and group dance are expressed in the completely identical movement qualities. Also the state of ecstacy for the transcendence, was expressed through the development of the rhythm of the movement. In other words, the process from Chapter 1 to chapter 2, started slowly and was gradually accelerated and then went into the violent convulsion in the end. In Chapter 3, where the integration is completed, the speed was clearly contrasted and expressed slowly and statically. The props, the object of human desire, also changed its meaning, in accordance with the journey of separation, transition and incorporation, from the existence which alienated human beings to the sacrifice to god, to the uncontrollable existence, to human's desire itself and to the existence with the possibility of creation, and in artwork, this is realized through the diployment and the movement of the props, solo and the dancers of group dance. Thirdly, it is the realization of the ritual images into the work through the use of the elements with ritual symbolism. White and black, symbolizing light and darkness of existence, was the color of the costumes for solo and group, who were in confrontational relationship. And the props, the pivotal point of these two, was expressed in blue symbolizing the deep spirituality of human beings and the depth of the universe. As the floor pattern of group dance was developed through the process from circles to number 3 and triangle, and to rectangle, the numbers and figures symbolizing the creation of the universe were used. Through this, the figure of group dance as an assistant to the new birth, was expressed. Also, when reaching the Chapter 3, the chapter of incorporation, this rectangular formation, with the appearance of human beings centrally positioned, created 5 directional formation, that is called "oh-bang"(五方) to express the human being as the center of the world in harmony with the nature. Lastly, solo and the props formed a point in the center of the stage in order to contain the meaning of the new start toward the reality, Besides this, by establishing the stage as the space of transition and starting work from the auditorium, the space of the reality, the regular stage space was secured. And, at the moment of inner change of solo and group dance ritual movements were used, and as a means of conflict resolution violent spasmodic movements of the body were used. This was to reflect the features of the ritual space and the state of ecstacy for the transcendent into the work. When viewed through the expressional features as above, a dance work, Ritual as A transition」 intends to imitate the appearance of visual world, overcoming of human desire and pain, and express the image of the union between God and human related to the creation of the universe and the new birth by using of symbolic elements of the rites in the works, and propose the vision of invisible world. This study aims to reveal the process of the creation of 「Ritual as A transition」 and its expressional features, ruminate the meaning of the rites and the roles of the rites as social and cultural functions that enable us to look back on our lives and transform the crisis of our lives to the positive energies. Also, by calling our attention to the importance of balance and harmony again, it aims to suggest the new view of the future to look back on the past as the materials for the creation of works.
