Leonard Bernstein의 Chichester Psalms 에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 20세기 후반 미국 음악계의 거목인 레너드 번스타인(Leonard Bernstein, 1918-1990)의 종교 합창 작품 「Chichester Psalms」에서 나타난 작곡기법을 중심으로 악곡을 분석하며 연구한 것이다. 미국 태생의 유대인 음악가로서 미국 문화와 유대교적 문화를 적절하게 융합하여 자신만의 독창적인 음악 양식을 담아낸 번스타인은 지휘자, 작곡가 또한 교육자로서 활발한 활동을 통해 음악의 본질을 찾아내어 이해하고, 클래식 음악을 대중들에게 쉽게 전달할 수 있도록 하는 절충적이면서도 감성적인 음악을 추구했던 음악인이었다. 본 논문에서는 번스타인의 「Chichester Psalms」의 악곡을 분석하기에 앞서 이론적 배경으로 20세기의 음악사적 흐름과 미국 합창의 역사, 그리고 번스타인의 생애와 그의 합창 작품에 대해 고찰하였으며, 악곡 분석을 통해서 번스타인이 다양하게 사용하였던 작곡 기법을 소개하였다. 혼성합창, 소년 독창(boy solo) 또는 카운터 테너(counter tenor), 오케스트라의 연주자로 구성된「Chichester Psalms」는 구약성서의 시편원문(히브리어)으로 작곡되었으며 총 3악장으로 나뉜다. 1악장은 ‘하나님께 기쁨과 감사로 찬양하라’는 내용이며, 1악장에서 나타난 도약과 순차로 이루어진 주제 동기는 번스타인의 신앙의 상징으로 1악장과 3악장의 도입부와 종결부에 나옴 으 로 서 곡 전체에 통일성을 부여하였고, 가사 내용과 음운에 맞게 다양한 리듬을 사용 함으로서 음악에 활기를 불어 넣기도 하였다. 2악장은 ‘하나님에 대한 믿음의 신앙고백과 하나님을 부정하는 사람들에 대한 경고’라는 내용으로 전개되며, 하프와 타악기를 사용하여 음색에 원시적인 색채감도 더해 주었다. 그리고 3악장에서는 ‘겸손한 마음으로 하나님께 나아가며, 형제들과 참된 연합을 이루자’라는 내용을 담고 있으며, 새로이 삽입된 서정적인 선율이 반복되는데 다양한 성부배열로 변화시켜 줌으로 인하여 반복의 지루함을 피할 수 있었다. 이렇듯 번스타인은 내용과 음운에 맞춰 다양한 리듬, 도약과 순차로 이루어진 선율, 주제 선율의 반복과 구조의 변형 등, 다양한 작곡 기법을 사용하여 대중에게 쉽게 다가갈 수 있는 현대음악을 만들어 내었다.;This thesis is dedicated to the research of the musical piece 「Chichester Psalms」, a religious choral written by the great American composer Leonard Bernstein. Leonard Bernstein, a Jewish American composer, felicitously combined the American culture with that of the Jew, successfully creating an original musical style. In addition, he was a musician who pursuit compromising and poetic music, in order to deliver the classical music to the general people by understanding the essence of music through vivacious activities as a conductor, composer and an educator. Before analyzing the musical piece 「Chichester Psalms」, this thesis will be contemplating on the trend of the musical history in the 20th century, the history of the American choral music, and the life and work of Leonard Bernstein. In addition, this thesis will be introducing the various composition techniques of Leonard Bernstein through the research focused on the text, tonality, meter and rhythm. 「Chichester Psalms」, which constitutes of mixed chorus, boy solo, and orchestra, is composed based on the original text of the Psalm from the Old Testament, and is divided into three movements. The first movement is about the 'joyful and grateful praising to God', the second movement is about the 'confession of faith and the admonition against the people who deny God', and the third movement is about the 'unity with God in modesty and the coalition with the brethren.' The main motive introduced in the first movement, which is the symbol of Bernstein's religious faith, gives unity to the musical piece by appearing both at the first and the third movement, giving vigor to the piece by utilizing various rhythms. In addition, the utilization of harps and percussions on the second movement adds primitive color to the music. In the third movement, the repetition of the lyrical theme is modified with various disposition of voice-part in order to avoid dullness. Thus, Bernstein created a modern music easily presentable to the general public by utilizing his characteristic composition technique, such as the repetition and modification of the melody and the main theme with the rhythm, leap and sequence.
