부조리한 세계와 나약한 존재

Abstract

21세기를 살아가는 사람들은 과거 그 어느 때보다 소통에 목말라 있으면서 정작 상대방에 대한 이해에는 끝없이 실패하는 비극적 현실에 처해있다. 소통을 위한 다양한 매체가 계속해서 개발되고 발전되는 가운데에서도 우리는 서로를 이해하지 못한다. 나는 우리가 서로에 대한 이해에 실패하는 것이 단순히 개인적 경험의 차이에서 근거하기보다는 그보다 더욱 근본적이고 본질적인 이유에서부터 비롯된다고 생각하였다. 먼저 나는 이해에 실패하는 원인을 개인적인 차원에서 찾아보았다. 그것은 개인의 신체 내부의 감각에서 기인한다. 개인은 타인과 동일하다고는 하나 그사실을 확인할 수조차 없는 고유한 감각체계를 신체 내부에 갖는다. 한 개인이 느끼는 감각을 타인과 비교할 수 있는 실질적이고 확실한 방법은 존재하지 않는다. 하나의 신체 내에서 감각은 절대적인 것이고 타인과 교감 불가능한 것이기 때문에, 신체와 감각은 개인을 독립되고 고립된 존재로 남겨지게 한다. 나는 독립된 신체 내부에서 빚어지는 감각으로 인해 소통이 결렬되는 과정을 신체를 직접 활용한 퍼포먼스 비디오를 통해 표현하였다. 이미 서로 공유할 수 있는 확정적 근거를 개인 내부에 갖고 있지 않은 우리들은, 사회적 합의에 의해 선택된 언어를 통해 소통하려 한다. 하지만 언어 역시 불완전한 도구라는 사실은 종종 간과하고 만다. 언어는 그것이 지시하고자 하는 대상을 온전하게 지시하지 못한다. 관념과 그것을 지시하는 언어 사이에는 간극이 있게 마련이어서 사람들이 하나의 단어를 보고 떠올리는 관념 혹은 이미지는 서로 달라질 수 밖에 없다. 우리는 서로 다른 개념을 놓고 같은 단어로 이야기하기도 하고, 같은 개념을 두고도 서로 다른 언어로 말하기도 한다. 소통의 가능성은 오로지 단어와 단어 사이, 문장과 문장 사이에만 간신히 존재할 수 있기 때문에, 불완전한 언어에 의존하여 소통하려는 시도는 한계를 내재할 수밖에 없다. 텍스트가 작성되는 과정을 그대로 재생하는 영상 작업은 언어가 그 무엇도 포착할 수 없다는 진술을 증명한다. 개인 내부의 감각과 언어가 갖는 특성이 결합되어 인간은 고립된 존재가 된다. 개인적 사회적 원인에 의해 절대로 이해할 수도 이해 받을 수도 없음을 깨닫는 순간 인간은 무력한 존재로 남겨지며, 나약하고 무력해진 개인에게 세계는 거대한 부조리로 비쳐진다. 이 세계에서는 표면적으로 보여 지는 것과 내부의 것이 반드시 일치하지는 않는다. 우리가 일상에서 관계 맺고 살아가는 것들 이면에서 부조리를 발견하는 순간 그들은 낯설어지고 이해할 수 없어지고, 기존에 알고 있던 지식으로부터 멀어진다. 이해에 실패한 인간이 세계를 받아들일 수 없게 되고 무력해지는 과정은 높은 수직 구조물과 약한 재료를 사용한 입체 작업을 통해 표현된다. 나는 본 논문을 통해 인간이 감각과 언어에 의해서 서로 분리되어 고립되고 나약한 존재가 되는 과정과, 그 존재에게 있어 세계가 얼마나 이질적이고 이해할 수 없는 것이 되는지를 서술한다. 우리는 서로에 대한 이해를 종용하기에 앞서, 인간이 개인적으로 그리고 사회적으로 한계를 내재한 생물이라는 것을 인식할 필요가 있다. 나는 작업을 통해 우리가 살아가면서 관계 맺는 대상들 이면에 존재하는 부조리를 포착하고, 우리 각자가 내면에 갖고 있는 헐겁고 불합리한 면을 직시하고자 한다.;Those people who live in the 21st century have become thirsty for communicating with others more than any time in the past years, but, actually, they are now facing a tragic reality in that they keep failing in understanding others. People simply don’t understand one another amid continued developments of diverse media for communication purposes. I thought that our failure in understanding each other was originated from more fundamental and intrinsic causes rather than simply based on the differences in individual’s experience. First of all, I tried to seek the causes of failure in such understanding from individual level. This is due to the sense of inside individual’s body. An individual body may be considered identical with those of others; meanwhile, however, humans have their own unique sensory system in their body insomuch as that such fact will never even be able to be confirmed. There are no substantial and proven methods to compare one individual’s feeling or sensation with those of others. Since the sensation inside one’s body is so absolute that it is impossible to share each other’s feeling, body and sensation make an individual be left as an independent and isolated existence. I expressed the steps of rupturing communications caused by the sensation which was created by the inside of an independent body through performance video utilizing human body directly. People, those who do not have any proven basis inside one’s body which cannot be shared each other, attempt to communicate one another through a chosen language according to social consensus. However, from time to time, people neglect the fact that language too is an imperfect tool. Language cannot instruct the subject, which has been intended to instruct by the language itself, in the right way. It shall be a matter of course to be able to find gaps easily between concept or idea and the language that instructs such idea or concept, so that those concepts or images people would come up with as soon as they see a vocabulary must be subject to differ one another. Oftentimes, people talk to each other on the different concepts or ideas using same vocabularies, or people talk to each other on the same concept or idea in a different way. Possibility of communication does barely exist between words or sentences only; hence, any trial to communicate relying on incomplete languages has no choice but to display limits thereof. Video works recreating the process in which texts are being drawn verify the statement that language cannot seize any opportunity whatsoever. The sensation inside individual body and the characteristics featured in the language are to be combined, and thus human ought to be an isolated existence. When human realizes the fact that they could neither understand such phenomenon nor they would be made to understand such fact, human then would be left out as a helpless existence, and thus the world shall be mirrored as a huge irregularity for an individual who has become weak and helpless. In this world, things which are seen on the surface and the things inside the world do not necessary coincide. At that moment people find any absurdity from the background of the living things people have come into relationships in everyday life, they will begin to look unfamiliar, and be above our comprehension, also they will drift farther apart from the knowledge that people have already known. Those humans who failed in understanding the things will not be able to accept the world, and then the process of being helpless is to be expressed from three dimensional works using high and vertical structure, and soft materials. In this paper, I have attempted to describe the humans in their process of being separated one another and isolated and becoming weak creatures by their feelings or sensations, and language, also tried to depict the fact that, for the existence, how incomprehensible and heterogeneous the world would be. Before urging understanding each other, it is required to realize the fact that humans are living things with individual and social limits inherent in them. Through the works, I have tried to catch irregularities which are existed in the reverse side of the objects people have come into relationships going along with life. And this work is also to face such loosened and unreasonable aspects, which could be found inside everyone.
