시퀀스적 타이포그래피를 통한 실험 그래픽 표현 연구

Abstract

디자인에서 기억해야 할 것은 이미지의 시각적 즐거움이 아니라 그것이 지니는 메시지라는 네빌 브로디의 말처럼 디자이너에게 중요한 것은 시각적인 즐거움만을 추구하는 것이 아니며, 그것이 담고 있는 커뮤니케이션의 효과를 통해 메시지를 전달하는 것이다. 시각 커뮤니케이션 디자인 분야에서 타이포그래피는 중요한 표현 수단으로, 실험적 타이포그래피의 언어적 기능과 비언어적 전달기능을 통해 보다 효과적인 커뮤니케이션이 이루어진다. 20세기 초반부터 시도된 타이포그래피의 실험적 표현 방법들은 오늘날까지 다양한 분야에 적용되고 있으며, 하나의 학문으로 자리를 잡아가고 있다. 미디어의 발달로 인해 과거의 지면에 고정되어 있던 타이포그래피는 미디어의 공간 안에서 보다 동적이고 복합적인 표현이 가능해지며 '무빙 타이포그래피'라는 새로운 용어가 생겨났다. 이러한 새로운 매체의 발전은 디자이너의 표현을 더욱 자유롭게 해주며 지면이라는 매체를 통해 표현의 한계를 넘어설 수 있게 해주었다. 오늘날 TV광고, 웹 사이트, 영화의 오프닝 시퀀스, 미디어 아트 등의 다양한 분야에 적용이 되며 중요한 커뮤니케이션의 수단으로 사용되는 예를 쉽게 접할 수 있다. 그러나 과학과 기술의 발전으로 탄생한 새로운 미디어를 통한 표현들이 무조건 최고의 것은 아니다. 디자인은 기술과 미디어에 종속되는 것이 아니라 미디어의 특성을 탐색해 디자이너가 표현 하고자 하는 의도와 목표를 위해 적용해 나가는 것이기 때문이다. 과거의 미디어에서 발전된 커뮤니케이션의 감각은 새로운 미디어에서도 서로 상호작용하며 발전해 나가는 것이라고 생각한다. 본 논문은 실험적 타이포그래피 표현 연구를 위해, 사회적으로 이슈가 된 4개의 사건을 선정하여 시퀀스 형식의 타이포그래피로 재구성 하였다. 실험적 타이포그래피는 기능적 타이포그래피에 비해 전달의 정확성이 떨어지기 때문에 정보나 의도가 잘못 전달 될 수 있는 단점을 가지고 있다. 그러나 본 연구에서 선정한 사건은 사람들이 이미 잘 알고 있는 것으로, 사건의 본질에 대한 미스 커뮤니케이션이 일어나지 않도록 하여 실험적 표현을 통한 공감 형성이 가능하게 하였다. 서사적 구조에 따른 사건의 진행과 과정을 시각적으로 표현하기 위해서 시퀀스의 형식을 책과 영상에 적용하여 작품을 제작하였고, 각 사건들이 가지는 특징을 시각적으로 재해석하였다. 또한 사건을 시퀀스적 타이포그래피의 표현을 통해 재구성하는 과정에서 각각의 작품들에 맞는 시퀀스의 형식과 실험적 타이포그래피의 표현을 적용하였다. 이를 통해 본 연구에서는 실험적 타이포그래피의 그래픽 표현연구의 필요성과 그 가능성을 찾아보고자 하였다. 오늘날 시각 커뮤니케이션 디자인 분야에서 타이포그래피는 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있으며 그 범위와 가능성이 점차 넓어지고 있다. 따라서 효과적인 커뮤니케이션의 수단으로 점차 중요성이 커져가는 타이포그래픽 표현과 효율적인 적용을 위해 다양한 실험적 그래픽 표현 연구가 필요하다고 생각한다.;As the designer Neville Brody's saying, what one should remember in a design is not the visual pleasure of its image but the message it carries, it is important to pursue not only a visual pleasure through a design but to convey a message through the effect of communication it embodies. As an important means of expression, typography in visual communication realm achieves a more effective communication through experimental typography'sverbal and non-verbal functions Experimental methods of expression through typography, used since the beginning of the 20th century, is being applied in various fields today and is finding its place in academics. Due to the advancement of media, typography, which used to be fixed on paper, has become dynamic and complex through the media, and has birthed a new term, 'moving typography.' Through media's advancement, designers were able to gain more freedom of expressionand go beyond the limitations of expressing through the paper medium. Today, typography is applied in various fields such as TV commercials, web sites, film's opening sequences,and media arts, and we can easily encounter examples of its usage as an important tool of communication.However, not all typographical expression through the latest media birthed by the development of science and technology is the best.Design, rather than being dependent on technology and media, should explore the characteristics of a particular media and use it to express the designer's intents and purposes. The sense of communication developed through the old media will have to interact with the new and evolve. This paper is for the study of expression through experimental typography, and four particular events representing social issues were selected and reconstructed as a sequential style of typography. The downside of Experimental Typography isthe possibility of delivering incorrect information or intention due to its lack of accuracy compared to functional typography. However, in this study, it was possible to make a clear connection through experimental typography because the selected eventswell-known to the general public, eliminating the chances of wrongly communicating the essence of the incidents. In order to visually represent the progression and processes of the events according to the narrative structure, this worksequence was produced using books and videos by visually reinterpreting the characteristics of each event. In addition, in the process of reconstructing the event through the expression of typographic sequence, the study applied the type of sequence and the expression of experimental typography that are most fitting to each work. The purpose of this study was to find the potential and the need for research on experimental typography's graphical representation. Today, typography is an important part of the field of visual communication design and its scope and potential gradually widening. Therefore, various experimental studies on graphical representation are needed for the expression and efficient application of typography whose importance has been growing gradually as an effective communication tool.
