폴 보울즈(Paul Bowles)의 가곡에 나타난 재즈 어법 연구

Abstract

미국 예술 가곡은 유럽 낭만주의 전통의 파 생물로서 시작되었다. 18세기초기 이후 미국 음악은 영국과 유럽대륙의 모델에 기초를 두었고 19세기 전반까지 감상적인 발라드가 주종을 이루었다. 1870년경부터 미국 작곡가들은 가곡에서 자신의 소리를 찾기 시작하였고 1910년대에 일어난 서정시의 부흥으로 20세기에 이르러 미국 예술 가곡은 전성기를 맞이하였다. 폴 보울 즈(Paul Bowles, 1910-1999)는 유럽 문화와 혼합된 미국 문화로부터 독립하기를 열망하였으며 이전시대“Americanists”와 같이 래그 타임 재즈, 흑인영가 등의 고유한 미국적 요소를 작품 속에 혼합하여 독립성을 띤 독자적 미국 스타일을 추구하는데 중요한 역할을 하였다. 특히 1940년대에는 20세기 예술 음악과 재즈가 서로 영향을 받아 작곡가들의 작품활동에 많은 영향을 끼치기 시작하였는데 그들은 재즈 음악에 나타나는 선율적 특징이나 리듬, 화성적 특징 등의 음악 어법을 사용하여 작품을 작곡하였다. 재즈를 사용한 작품들은 기존과 다른 새로운 스타일의 음악으로 창조되었으며, 이에 대한 대표적인 작곡가중 한 사람이 본 논문에서 다루고자 하는 미국의 보울즈이다. 보울 즈 는 자신의 가곡 작품에서 재즈의 어법을 사용하여 새로운 스타일의 작품을 작곡하였는데 그 중 April Fool Baby(1935)와 Night Without Sleep(1943), 그리고 Blue Mountain Ballades(1946) 중 Lonesome Man과 Sugar in the Cane은 재즈 어법을 이용한 그의 대표적인 작품들이다. 본 논문은 위 4곡의 분석을 통하여 보울 즈 의 음악적 특징과 그의 작곡 기법을 살펴보고 예술 가곡에서 재즈 어법을 어떻게 효과적으로 활용하였는지에 대하여 연구한 것이다. 논문에서는 먼저, 보울 즈 의 생애와 음악적 특징 및 재즈의 역사와 음악적 요소에 대하여 고찰하고 더불어 재즈 어법이 사용된 보울 즈 의 4개의 가곡에 대한 조성변화 및 재즈의 영향을 받은 화성과 형식, 리듬을 중심으로 분석하여 다음과 같은 음악적 특징들을 유도해 내었다. 보울 즈 는 4곡 안에서 장, 단 음계와 더불어 재즈의 특징적인 음계인 단 음계 적 5음 음계, 블루노트를 사용하고 있다. 또한 이 곡들에는 재즈에 나타나는 리듬적 특징인 래그 타임의 영향을 받은 당김음과 복합 리듬의 형태가 특징적으로 나타나며, 잦은 변박과 다양한 리듬 진행을 사용하고 있다. 화성은 기존의 3화음에서 벗어난 7, 9, 11화음뿐 아니라 기존의 3화음, 7화음에 음정이 첨가된 첨가 화음이 사용되며, 재즈에 사용되는 화음 진행의 구조가 특징적으로 나타난다. 형식은 재즈 음악에서 가장 기본적인 골격을 이루는 ABAC 형식과 AABA 형식이 특징적으로 나타나며, 재즈 음악에 잘 나타나는 가곡 형식인 2부분, 3부분의 짧고 간결한 형식도 사용하고 있다. 이 곡들에서는 시의 내용과 일치를 이루는 선율의 방향과 리듬으로 음악과 시가 조화를 이룬다. 또한 규칙적인 각운을 갖는 부분의 선율과 리듬을 동일한 진행으로 표현해 주고 있다. 이와 같이 보울 즈 는 미국 고유 음악인 재즈에 나타난 음악적 특징들을 기존의 음악 어법에 잘 융화시켜 독자적 미국 스타일을 추구하였으며, 짧고 간결한 형식과 재즈에 나타나는 선율적, 화성적, 리듬적 특징 및 가사와 음악의 자연스러운 연결로 보울 즈 만의 특색 있는 작품을 만들어 내었다.;American classical songs have begun its history as a derivative of European traditional romanticism. Since the early 18th century, the American music has based on the model of England and European continent, and has been made up mainly of sentimental ballads until the first half of the 19th century. American composers has started to find out and formed their own sounds and tones in their songs from around 1870, and had their heydays in the 20th century thanks to the revival of lyric poetry in the 1910s. Paul Bowles (1910-1999) had craved for the independence of the American songs from the then American culture which had mixed with the European’s. He had played a critical role in developing the independent American style by putting the indigenous American elements in his works such as ragtime, Jazz, and black spirituals like the “Americanists” of the earlier times. In particular, Jazz and the 20th century’s art music have had heavy influences on the pieces of music, interacting with each other in the 1940s. Composers had written their pieces using musical expressions with jazz’s melodic, rhythmic and harmonic features. The works having those features had been created in a new style, which were different from the existing ones. One of the representative composers of those works is Paul Bowles who is the subject of this thesis. Bowles had produced the works in a novel style utilizing jazz’s grammar. Among the works, “April Fool Baby (1935)”, “Night Without Sleep (1943)”, and “Lonesome Man” and “Sugar in the Cane” of “Blue Mountain Ballades (1946) ” are the representatives. This paper examines the features of Bowles’s works along with his composing techniques through the analysis on the above four songs, and studies on how he had effectively utilized the jazz’s grammar in the arts songs. For this purpose, the paper first takes a look at Bowls’ life and the characteristics of his works, and then analyzes his four representative songs with jazz form, focusing on changes in tonality, harmonies, musical forms, and rhythms that they have. Then, the following features are observed. In these four songs, Bowls used blue note and minor pentatonic scale as well as major and minor scales, which are typically used in jazz. In addition, the songs have features of compound rhythms and syncopations influenced by ragtime which is a rhythmic feature of jazz. They also use a frequent irregular time and a variety of rhythmic motion. The harmony of the works consists of 7th, 9th, and 11th chords which are different from the typical triads, and uses the chords which add an interval to the triads and 7th chords. The works show the same characteristics of the harmonic motion structure as used in jazz. They use the forms of ABAC and AABA which are the basic in jazz, together with the short and concise song forms of two-part or three-part that are also widely used in jazz. In those songs, music and poems are in harmony with the directions and rhythms of the melodies concurred with the contents of the poems, and express the rhythms and melodies having the regular rhymes with the same motion. Like this, Bowls had mixed well the existing musical grammar with some of the features of jazz, an American innate music, and had pursued the unique American style. With melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic features and the natural links between lyrics and music, he had also produced the works of his own distinctive style.
