문학을 담은 그림

Abstract

Literature and pictures have had profound interactions throughout the history of culture and arts to produce one tune. Since ancient Greece, painters have drawn literature in their art works. In East Asian culture, poetry, literature, and painting were integrated in the form of unified screen with both literature and drawings. It is the result of long years in the history of tuning to each other between literature and painting that the background stories associated with paintings based on mythology and legends when we look at them come across our minds spontaneously. Many paintings were based on inspirations from myths, legends, and religions, and there have been shared feelings among them through various themes and materials for long years. However, the tuning between literature and fine arts that seemed to last forever without changes rapidly declined beginning with Manet. Since its decline, narrative fine arts could not recover its magnificent glory of the past. Daily advancing media and latest digital technologies lead people to new and various visual worlds. At a time when new and fresh advanced technologies combine with arts in the 21st century to lead pictures, I still draw paintings in the style of 'literature work embraced in fine arts' that might be stale and outdated. "Why do I want to contain literature in my paintings?" In an age when even talking about the end of fine arts might be regarded as stale, I still stick to pictures where literature and fine arts breathe together. This question I have had about my works for long years provided the clue to this article I to be unfolded here. The question will also become the medium on which I will present more solid foundations for my works upon further studies. On the surface, literature and fine arts have different expression systems. Literature employs explanatory and segmented languages whereas paintings employ suggestive and sensual methods. We can find two clearly different systems in their features here. Even then, I insist the two different types of media communicate between them and breathe together closely. I intend to study the way literature and fine arts communicate with each other. In addition, I will write what roles literature takes in pictures and what they mean in a concrete fashion. In that context, I intend to study artists influenced by literature works and expressed the literature works through their paintings, and their fine arts works to provide more feasible basis for the points of this argument here. I will look at how Sandro Botticelli, pre-Raphaelite artist John Everett Millais, and Maggie Taylor expressed literature in their paintings. Moreover, more fundamental studies will be carried out by looking at the works that were influenced by paintings and produced in the form of literature works. To be more specific, I will investigate the works of Victorian novelists and Alain Robbe-Grille, and living authors of the modern world. Through such studies, I will narrate how visual arts and linguistic texts develop relationships between them. I look at my paintings as one linguistic text containing minds and souls. That will be an important starting point for the study of the relationships of interacting texts between literature and fine arts I will write about later. I will reinterpret old literature works through 21st century modern images and build the bridge that can act to help classics and fine arts of the modern world to communicate with each other. Lastly, I hope to become a tiny light to rediscover culture and society by allowing my artistic expressions to re-illuminate social interest in those times on the 21st century modern world.;문화 예술사에서 문학과 회화는 역사적으로 깊은 상호작용을 하며 호흡하고 있다. 고대 그리스 때부터 화가들은 문학을 그림에 담기 시작했고 동양 문화에서는 시서화의 일체를 통해 문학과 그림을 한 화면에 담았다. 신화와 전설을 소재로 다룬 그림을 보면 그림과 연관되는 배경서사가 자연스럽게 머릿속을 떠오르게 되는 것도 역사적으로 오랜 기간 동안 문학과 회화의 호흡이 일궈낸 결과이다. 이처럼 많은 그림들은 신화와 전설, 종교에서 영감을 얻었고 다양한 주제나 소재를 통해 서로 오랫동안 교감을 나누었다. 그러나 영원 무상할 것만 같았던 문학과 회화의 호흡은 마네를 시작으로 급속도로 쇠락의 길을 걸었다. 이 후 서사적 회화는 과거에 누렸던 화려한 영광을 되찾기 힘들어졌다. 하루가 다르게 발전하는 매체와 첨단 디지털 기술력은 사람들에게 새롭고 다양한 시각적 세계를 인도한다. 새롭고 신선한 첨단 기술력이 21세기 많은 예술을 주도하고 있는 이 시점에서 나는'미술 속에 담긴 문학작품'이라는 실로 고리타분할 수 있고 시대에 뒤쳐진 그림을 고집스레 그리고 있다. ‘왜 나는 그림 속에 문학을 담고 싶어 하는가?’ 더 이상 회화의 종말을 운운하는 것조차 고리타분해진 시대에 나는 문학과 미술이 함께 호흡하는 회화를 고집한다. 오랫동안 품어 왔던 나의 작품에 대한 질문은 앞으로 전개될 이 글에 대한 실마리를 제공했다. 이 질문은 앞으로의 연구를 통해 좀 더 나의 작품에 대한 탄탄한 근거를 제시하는 매개체가 될 것이다. 표면적으로 문학과 미술은 다른 표현체계를 지닌다. 문학은 설명적이고 분절적인 언어를 사용하고 그림은 함축적이며 감각적인 방식을 사용한다. 우리는 여기에서 뚜렷이 다른 두 성격의 체계를 읽을 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 나는 두 매체가 서로 상호 소통하고 있으며 밀접한 호흡을 한다고 주장한다. 나는 문학과 미술이 어떻게 소통하는 것이 가능한지 연구하였다. 아울러 나의 작품을 근간으로 문학이 회화 속에서 어떠한 역할을 하며 그것이 지니는 의미는 무엇인지 구체적으로 서술하였다. 그런 의미에서 나는 좀 더 타당성 있는 작품의 논지를 위해 문학에 영향을 받고 그 문학을 그림으로 표현한 작가와 작품에 대해 탐구하였다. 산드로 보티첼리, 라파엘 화파의 존 에버렛 밀레이 그리고 메기 테일러가 문학을 그림 안에 어떠한 방식으로 표현했는지에 대해 살펴보았다. 또한 그림을 통해 영향을 받고 문학작품으로 표현한 작품에 대해 알아보면서 좀 더 심층적인 연구를 진행하였다. 구체적으로 빅토리아 소설가들과 알랭 로브그리예 그리고 현존하는 세계 문필가들의 텍스트에 대해 연구하였고 이를 통해 시각예술이 언어텍스트와 어떠한 방식으로 관계를 맺어 갔는지에 대해 서술하였다. 나는 나의 그림을 정신과 혼이 깃들어 있는 하나의 언어텍스트로 바라본다. 이것은 앞으로 전개할 문학과 미술의 상호 텍스트성 연구에 있어서 중요한 출발점이 될 것이다. 나는 오래된 문학작품을 21세기 현대적 이미지로 다시 재해석 하며 고전과 현대미술이 소통할 수 있는 하나의 다리 역할을 만들려 한다. 그리고 나의 예술적 표현이 당대의 사회적 관심을 21세기 현대시대에 재조명하며 문화와 사회를 새롭게 발견하는 작은 불빛이 되기를 희망한다.
