폐물의 상징성을 통한 도자 조형 연구

Abstract

18세기 이후 산업사회는 인류에게 편리함을 주었다. 산업사회의 대량화 덕분에 전 세계는 더욱 풍족해 졌고, 보다 나은 편리한 생활을 영위할 수 있었다. 그러나 그 편리함을 제공하고 유지하는 과정에서 지구는 급속도로 파괴되어 갔다. 산업 자본주의는 더 많은 것을 욕망하게 만들고 점점 더 소비하게 만들었다. 이러한 과잉생산은 인류에게 환경의 위기를 처하게 만들었다. 이러한 세상과 환경 문제는 더 이상 어는 한 집단의 노력으로 국한되지 않는 전 지구적인 문제가 되었다. 또한 환경에 대한 사람들의 의식은 지금도 변화하며 지속되고 있다. 본 연구자는 현재를 살아가는 현대인으로서 이 시대의 환경을 바라보는 새로운 시각을 찾고자 연구를 시작 하게 되었다. 본 연구의 목적은 사람들이 살아가면서 생활하게 되는 폐물을 소재로 삼아 도자로 조형함으로써 얻게 되는 미적 효과를 통해 감상자가 우리일상의 사물에 대한 시각을 다시 얻을 수 있는 방법을 연구해 보았다. 현시대의 폐물을 사용하여 우리가 일상적으로 무심히 반복하여 사용하는 것들이 본래의 기능을 다하고 남게 되었을 때 도자를 통해 다시 표현됨으로서 우리의 환경으로 돌아와 미적으로 기능 하는 것을 보여주고자 하는 것이다. 이러한 본래의 사물이 갖고 있던 기능을 상실하고 미학적인 구성을 통해 새로운 의미를 찾아 나가는 작업은 현대의 작가들의 작업들을 통해 연구해 보고자 한다. 또한 물의 이미지를 작품에 담아 다시 환경으로 되돌아 오는 의미를 부여하고자 노력 하였다. 우리는 물 없이는 존재 할 수 없으며, 곧 물은 모든 생명체의 필수 불가결한 요소 이다. 이러한 물이 갖는 의미와 상징성에 대해서 연구하여 작업을 풀어나가고자 하였다. 먼저 물이 갖는 상징성을 이용한 다양한 분야의 대해 연구해 보고 작업에 있어 물의 의미가 작품에 표현 되었을 때 얻을 수 있는 효과를 찾고자 노력 하였다. 또한 물의 의미를 푸른색으로 표현함에 있어 푸른색이 우리 사회에서 갖는 상징성을 찾음으로서 작품에 당위성을 찾아 가고자 하였다. 표현내용은 본인이 살아가는 동안 일상에서 쓰이는 것들을 위주로 작업 하여 우리의 일상에서 무심히 지나친 면들을 다시 미학적으로 재구성 하는 것에 의미를 두었다. 본 작품의 조형 과정은 실제 사용되는 제품들(맥주병, 깡통, 일회성 휴지, 페트병등)을 석고로 본 떠 동일 한 형태로 다량의 제작이 가능한 가압성형기법과 이장주입성형기법을 보다 큰 형태를 제작하기 위해 코일링 성형기법과 판 성형기법을 이용하였다. 태토는 성형 후 소성까지 형태의 변형이 적고 강도가 강한 석기질 점토와 흙물과 안료의 색의 배합을 위해 자기질점토를 사용 하였다. 제작 방법으로는 작품 <1, 2, 3, , 5, 6, 7, 8, 9>에서는 제품의 실제 모습을 본뜨기 위해 이장주입성형을 하였고 작품 <4, 10> 작업에서는 작품의 크기를 감안하여 코일링 성형 기법과 판 성형기법을 활용하였다. 본 연구를 통해 일상에서 폐물의 환경적 의미를 되짚어 보고 폐물의 이미지가 도자라는 매체를 통해 다시 표현 되었을 때 새로운 미학을 찾고자 하였다. 또한, 물과 푸른색의 상징성에 대해 연구해 나아감으로서 도자라는 매체와 함께 폐물의 가치를 환원 시키는 작업을 해 나아가고자 노력 하였다. 이러한 물체가 갖는 새로운 의미는 우리의 일상을 다시 바라 볼 수 있는 시각을 만들어 줌으로써 일상의 소재와의 새로운 관계를 다시 성립 할 수 있었다.;People have possessed a life of convenience and affluence for over the two centuries, since the Industrial Revolution changed every aspect of our lives. Nevertheless, with the properties of capitalism, the industrial society has made people desire and consume the more and more. In the 20th century, the continued trend triggered many inevitable problems to the environment in the world. At present, these environmental problems throughout the world are recognized as critical crises that we have to cope with. At the same time, the awareness of people about the issues has been increasing. As a person who lives the contemporary society, I began some work to develop a new point of view on this trend. In the clay works, the origin is based on waste materials. The works are intended for people to recognize and think again about the aesthetic meanings when these waste materials are transformed into clay works. The message I want to express through these works is that these waste materials can serve new and different functions when they return into the environment near to us after having finished their original functions. Also, I studied several works of contemporary artists and tried to reflect on my works. In addition, I introduced the image of water to the works in order to express the recurrence of the wastes into our environment. Water is the one of the essential natural resources in our lives. I looked into the meanings and symbols of water and the results were reflected on the works. For this study, some ready-made objects were used to cast the molds for slip-casting. The works were made using the slip-casting technique and some colors were added to the slip. In addition to this method, the coiling and press-molding techniques were applied to the Works 〈1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8>. In the work, new meanings were given to some of the common things we easily threw away after use. Through this work, I realized that these materials could get new, artistic and aesthetic meanings which were obviously different from the original ones people have understood so far. I concluded that with these new meanings we could develop the recognition of the common things which were close to our lives, and after all, the new meanings would give us new and different recognitions about our surroundings.
