Abstract
This Study is an exploration of the definition of vijñaptimātra, especially seen in the Exposition of Mahāyānasaṃgraha-bhāṣya(攝大乘論), and the process that consciousness is transformed into vijñaptimātra-anartha. The transformation of consciousness involves that of existence, and thus this work specifically focuses on the way in which secular consciousness is transformed into the wisdom as expediency(後得智) of the enlightened. The previous studies identify vijnapti of vijñaptimātra with the discriminative faculty(vijñapti) of vijnāna, or the concept of ālayavijnāna, and therefore define vijñaptimātra as consciousness only and no sense-object; and distinguish the issues of consciousness from that of existence. Vasubandhu problematizes, however, this perspective in 唯識二十論. He claims that the bodhisattva of non-discriminative wisdom(無分別智) simply fathoms the non-existence(abhāva) of a sense-object; that is, a sense-object is conditioned by vijñapti, and thus it is not substantial entity(artha). This claim presupposes that the unenlightened perceives a sense-object as a substantial entity. Those previous studies also fails to examine the relationship between vijñaptimātra and three-fold natures(三性), and to explicate the transformation of those three-fold natures is that of existence and consciousness. Yogacāra thought sheds lights on the structure of external reality and that of existential situation. Vasubandhu, as a Yogacāra thinker, the structure of external reality is determined by ālayavijnana, as a form of a seed, bearing habitual tendency from past experiences. ālayavijnana conditions the existence of sentient beings and the situations of consciousness, which is the eighteen dharmadhatū(十八界). Yogacāra reinterprets the whole universe of eighteen dharmadhatū by means of the notion of vijñaptimātra. The structure of sentient being and consciousness is the eighteen dharmadhatū, and gen(indrya 根), jing(viṣaya 境), and shi (vijñāna 識) are respectively conditionally-arisen dharma, bhāva, and vijñapti. In this regard, a sense-object amounts to be vijñapti. The eighteen-dharmadhatū is the existential structure, consciousness condition, and its state, which are determined by past habitual predispositions. Hence, the vijñapti in Yogacāra is not the consciousness of representation and discrimination, but the dharma of instant duration that conditionally rises and extinguishes. In the Exposition of Mahayānasamgraha-bhāśya, the meabing of artha is two-fold: first is the object of artha. The artha of non-discriminative wisdom is tathātā, vijñaptimātratā, śūyatā, dharmadhatū. Second, artha is nimitta(相), asad(abhūta 無), and atman (我). vijñapti, conditionally arisen, exists in accordance with its own attribute. The consciousness function as such is the discriminative faculty that grasps pratibimba (影像) or nimitta(相) as nāman (名); and the very nimitta is the object(所緣) of consciousness. The consciousness here perceives the vijñapti of a sense-object as artha, which is the discriminative state, or parikalpitasvabhāva(遍計所執性). Vasubandhu construes ‘to reveal’ as ‘to conceptualize(upalambha 可得) in the case that ‘there exist no artha, but vijnapti, but artha is revealed(pratibhasa 似現) as existence so long as consciousness operates under conceptions.’ The consciousness state of the unenlightened is grounded upon conceptualization, which misconceives vijñapti of nimitta as artha(=atman). Although the eighteen dharmadhatū, that is the sentient existence and consciousness structure, is the result from habitual tendency, consciousness conceptualizes the whole eighteen dharmadhatū, and misperceives it as a substantial existence. Secular consciousness perceives not as it is, but in accordance with habitual tendency. Through a series of practices, however, after non-discriminative wisdom experiences the essence of existence and consciousness(vijñaptimātratā) as animita, the discriminative faculty of vijñāna is transformed into that of awareness(jñāna). Thus, non-discriminative wisdom regards vijnapti of nimitta not as artha, but as vijñapti, which conditionally arises and extinguishes. I define, in this regard, vijñapti of 依他起性 as the pure eighteen dharmadhatū, which fails to reproduce affliction, time, space, and the conditioned eighteen dharmadhatū, caused by the vija of hatred and disinclination within ālayavijñāna. In other words, vijñaptimātra refers to the two sides of purity and defilement in terms of the structure of life and consciousness, and vijñaptimātra-anartha denotes “the state of existence of pure vijñapti alone, arisen by conditions, and at the same time it signifies the state that does not perceive vijñapti of viṣaya as artha. Hence, the conventional understanding of vijñaptimātra-anartha, that is ‘consciousness-only and no sense-object,’ fails to fully fathom the context of no-sense object, but merely literally interprets it. The Yogacāra thought negates not the existence of a sense-object, but the consciousness that sustantializes a sense-object as a substantial existence. The non-discriminative wisdom does not cognize anartha(無境), vijñapti of a conditionally-arisen sense-object, as artha, but it perceives 有爲法 of anātman as illusion, phantasm, or the moon in water. This study investigates the process that consciousness is transformed as follows: the Exposition of Mahayānāsaṃgra-bhāṣya had is tinguishes the consciousness of sentient being sasdiscriminativestate of linguisticfaculty from that of non-discriminative state of non-linguisticfaculty.The former state distinguishe sunperfected discrimination of the mundane from perfected discrimination of wisdom of non-discriminative wisdom. The state of consciousness qualitatively transforms in progress from unperfected discrimination(遍計所執性), onto 止觀, onto non-discriminative wisdom (圓成實性), and onto the perfected discrimination of wisdom (依他起性). The common factor of discriminative states is 尋何 of undefined cetasika(心所), the way in which vitārka-vicāra(尋何) functions determines the qualitative difference of consciousness state. The difference is bifurcated into proper and reverse function of language. This denotes that ‘the transformation of consciousness and existence’ of the existential structure of mundane realities is innate within consciousness and 心所; and that the consciousness state of human being is that of conceptual thinking. The enlightened of the non-discriminative wisdom obviates the substantializing or ego-centric thinking as he achieved both the transformation of consciousness and existence, and he possesses the wisdom that regards all sentient beings as anatman. Hence, the bodhisattva of wisdom, who fathoms vijñapti-anartha, lives the ethical life of compassion in accordance with the transformation of consciousness.
