글로벌 시대, 국가 정체성의 양가적 의미

Abstract

글로벌화로 인해 국가간 문화 교류가 활발해지고, 초국가적인 공동체가 형성되기도 하면서 국가 경계의 의미도 변화하고 있다. 이 논문은 이러한 21세기 사회에서 국가에 소속되어 있다는 사실, 국민으로서의 자의식, 또는 국가와 자신의 운명이 연결되어 있다는 인식으로서의 국가 정체성은 어떠한 의미를 가질까 하는 궁금증에서 출발한다. 국내 한류담론을 통해 21세기 한국 사회의 국가 정체성을 살펴보고, 그것이 초국가적 공동체, 국가 공동체 그리고 글로벌 시대의 문화 생활에 대해 갖는 의미가 무엇인지 찾아보는 것이 이 논문의 목적이다. ‘한류(韓流)’의 글자 한(韓)은 기표로서 한국이라는 국가 정체성을 상징하고 있으나 ‘한류’의 실질적인 내용-한류를 구성하는 상품이나 문화-에 드러난 국가 정체성은 한국이라 단정짓기 힘들다. 이러한 딜레마 때문에 한류에 대한 한국 사회의 반응, 즉 한류담론은 글로벌 시대에 국가 정체성이 갖는 의미를 투영한다. 이 논문은 한류란 신조어가 익숙해지기 시작한 2000년대의 국내 한류담론을 중심으로 방송 프로그램과 학술논문, 두 종류의 자료를 수집해 분석했다. 그리고 분석을 용이하게 하기 위해 분석도구로 사용할 이념형을 구성하였다. 이념형은 국가 정체성을 시간적 차원에서 논의하고 있는 호미 바바(Homi Bhabha)의 개념들을 차용하여 구성되었다. 초국가적 공동체에 대한 국가 정체성의 의미, 국가 공동체에 대한 국가 정체성의 의미, 그리고 글로벌 문화에 대한 국가 정체성의 의미를 분리해 살펴보았다. 분석 결과 한류 담론에는 다양한 형태의 국가 정체성이 나타났다. 초국가적 공동체의 형성에 있어서는 그것을 지향하는 경우와 방해하는 경우를 볼 수 있었고, 국가 공동체에 대해서는 공동체를 통합하는 의미와 분열시키는 의미, 그리고 일상적 문화 생활에 있어서는 국가 정체성이 문화적 다양성을 보호하고 지지하기도 하지만 그것을 억압하고 문화를 획일화 하기도 할 수 있음을 볼 수 있었다. 이렇듯 한류담론에 나타난 국가 정체성의 의미는 양가적이었다. 양가적 의미를 갖는다는 것에 있어서는 일치하나 방송 프로그램과 학술논문, 그리고 국가 정체성의 가변적 시간과 지속적 시간 사이에 차이가 발견되기도 하였다. 초국가적 공동체를 지지하는 태도가 더 빈번히 나타나는 쪽은 학술논문이었고, 국가 공동체의 통합을 더 강하게 지향하는 것으로 보이는 쪽은 방송 프로그램이었다. 초국가적 공동체와 국가 공동체 두 경우 모두 국가 정체성의 가변적 시간을 통해 공동체의 통합을 지향하는 경우가 지속적 시간을 통해 통합이 지향되는 경우보다 빈번히 나타났다. 문화에 대한 국가 정체성의 의미는 방송 프로그램과 학술논문 모두 약간의 차이로 문화적 다양성을 지향하는 경우가 획일화를 초래하는 경우보다 빈번히 나타났다. 문화를 획일화하는 의미는 주로 국가 공동체의 통합을 지향하는 맥락에서 나타났지만, 국가 공동체의 통합이 문화적 다양성을 억압하는 방향으로 진행된다고 할 수는 없었다.;To articulate the meaning of National Identity in 21st Century, this article analyzes the discourse of ‘hallyu’ in Korea. ‘Hallyu’ is a hybrid culture that reflects the change of cultural flow in Globalized society, and the dilemma of National Identity in globalizing world. By analyzing Korean society’s reaction to ‘hallyu’, this article aims to find what effects National Identity has on the formation of a globalized community, the maintenance of nation as a community and the diversity of culture we enjoy. Borrowing some of the concepts from Homi, K. Bhabha , this article forms an ideal type of “the meanings of national identity”. The ideal type shows how national identity may have ambivalent meanings towards community and culture. It can strengthen or weaken the bond among community members, and it can standardize or diversify the culture the members enjoy. This article analyzes the discourse of ‘hallyu’ using this ideal type. The main findings of this study shows that Korean society is favorable to the formation of intra-national community, but texts more often reveals hostile attitude at the same time, blocking the way to a complete partnership among countries. The effect of national identity on nation’s own unity is also found to be ambivalent. However, there were significant differences between the texts from broad cast programs and the articles of scholarly journals. Broad cast programs more much more supportive to nation’s unity then the scholarly journals. The relation of national identity and cultural diversity found in Korean society was neither conflicting nor supporting. Though it seems national identity may sometimes stress members of the community to sacrifice their cultural diversity for complete unity of their nation or intra-national community.
