(Mind in a Physical World, 1998)」은 이 문제를 효과적으로 지적하고 있다. Philosophy of mind has long dealt with the problem of how to place mental properties within the natural world. This problem was focused on whether to reduce mental properties to physical properties or not. The purpose of this theses is to investigate where functionalism posits itself within such ontological problem. Kim's Mind in a Physical World(1998) points out this problem effectively. His claim is that the ontological position of functionalism is reductionism. This is called 'functional reduction'. Functional reduction is the thought that functional property is identical to physical property. This is a strong kind of reductionism that shows the character of property monism. Even though the existing functionalism was appropriate as a method to studying mental states, its ontological standpoint was not clear, and therefore receives this kind of criticism. How functionalism in general will respond to Kim's ontological criticism must become an issue. Is a reductionistic conclusion satisfying for functionalism as in Kim's conclusion? Functional reduction asserts that a functional property is not an existing 'property' but only a 'concept'. In the standpoint of functional reduction, the standpoints of functionalism which proved itself as an appropriate means as an analogy on mental states, will be replaced by neurophysiological problems. It seems that functionalism should not be easily content with such sort of reduction. Functionalism should express a standpoint of non-reductive ontology which shows a direction towards which the sort of reduction by Kim is prevented from being derived. Even though functionalism did not express an ontological standpoint, there are ontological backgrounds which bring about functionalism. We must look into those points of existing ontological standpoints which were dissatisfying, and therefore induced functionalistic standpoint to be brought up. The first chapter of this thesis investigates such ontological background of functionalism. Especially, we point out the limitation of behaviorism and type-identity theory which made a decisive influence on bringing about functionalism. And, we examine what kind of methodological, metaphysical claims were made by functionalism. In chapter 2, we point out the problem that arises when mend-body relation is explained, which is ac ontological question. We examine the limitation and tension revealed by the supervenience thesis and the resulting standpoint of property dualistic thinking and the principle of causal exclusion. As Kim has long carefully presented, supervenience can be considered as a theory with explanatory power. Although, on the whole, supervenience has been thought of as a dependence or determination relation, supervenience by itself can only express the covariance between physical property and mental property. Covariance does not exclude mutual dependence nor mutual determination. Because supervenience does not have explanatory power, it is compatible with emergentism, epiphenomenalism, or type-identity theory, which are on a different standpoint concerning the mind-body relation. However, the more problematic situation is about how property dualism which is established by models like supervenience can be compatible with the principle of causal exclusion which has long been presented by Kim. If mental property is acknowledged its existence as a property which exhibits causal power, the problem is in what way can this be compatible with the causal exclusion principle which only acknowledges the causal power of physical property. In this thesis, we consider such problem situation as that which requires a new kind of ontological establishment by Kim. Although Kim's functional reduction can occupy a position as a criticism of functionalism, conclusively, it has taken the role of giving up property dualism within the problem situation of choosing between property dualism and the principle of causal exclusion. In such situation, in order for us to maintain the intuition that what is mental is distinguished from what is physical, it is our task to introduce a causal power which is distinguished from physical causal power. Our task is to present causal compatibilism. In chapter 3, we examine the steps functional reduction takes and proceeds. And in so doing, we examine on what premise the causal exclusion principle which made identifying functional property merely as physical property a definite problem has proceeded. In the existing functionalism, functional property was defied logically; second-order property which has been used as the definition of functional property was presented as a property in which physical property was existentially quantified. Kim's criticism points out that one cannot claim that it exists, merely by being existentially quantified. However, logical relation does not completely exclude relation within the real world. It is necessary for functionalism to bring the logical definition out into the world and have it positively verified. In so doing, what becomes the problem is causal effectiveness. Many philosophers including Kim suggest some sort of causal power as the basis of existence. Kim has long pointed out that non-reductionist will be unable to solve the problem of mental causation. I this thesis, we think that the principle of causal exclusion, by its nature, possesses the premise which acknowledges only deductive explanation as explanation, and only linear causation as causation. However, deductive explanation cannot exclude non-deductive explanation a priori, and linear causation cannot exclude non-linear causation a priori. The success of the effort to introduce a distinguishable property from physical property ca be said to depend on how non-linear causal power can be interpreted so as to be acknowledged as causal power. This is the way to avoid the devastating consequence of the principle of causal exclusion on the mental property. In chapter 4, we think about in what way non-reductive functionalism has to be transformed. We examine in what sense the multiple realizability argument which has become the motto of non-reductionism becomes a burden to non-reductionism. And, in order to overcome this, we look at in what way functionalism can be naturalized and win causal effectiveness. The decisive reason why multiply realizability cannot be a strong suggestion for non-reductionism is that the possibility of functional property possessing radically heterogeneous realizations cannot be excluded. Property possessing radically heterogeneous realizations is criticized as an artificially suggested category rather that a property existing in the natural world. Whit only multiple realization argument, such criticism cannot be avoided. The criticism that functional property is a mere concept is reinforced by the fact that multiply realizability which gave rise to functionalism can be criticized in the same manner. It seems that the task of the functionalist is to present some sort of constraint on multiple realizability in order to place functional property within the natural world. Furthermore, it will be possible to suppose the causal power expressed by functional property as the kind of constraint given to the realizations. In this thesis, we suppose 'structural cause' as the causal power expressed by functional property. Structural cause is the leading power and constraining power that arranges physical realizations. This causal power is that which is effective in the causal process of realizations, which does not compete with causation of physical realizations. Supposition of such causal power requires a conversion in the way function is understood in existing functionalism. Although existing functionalism expressed interest in the multiply-realized internal physical state within the causal specification, functional property that expresses structural causation defines function as the process which makes it possess the causal specification. Here, we suppose 'structuring' as the definition of function. Ultimately, the discussion of this thesis is presented as an preliminary work to construct the ontology of non-reductive functionalism. We have tried to illuminate function in terms of structural causation, or structuring as the point of discussion for non-reductionism and reductionism of functional property and mental property. For such discussion, we must deal with in detail how non-linear explanations occurring in contemporary science can be explained philosophically. The important issue here is how to set up a model of philosophical discussion in order to deal with such discussion. Ontological model like supervenience makes it impossible to deal with the concept of structural causation and structuring. This is because supervenience cannot distinguish between whether the property supervenient on physical property is that which was established by some effective power or that which appeared by chance without any effective power. Structural cause, or structuring is constraining power preempted in the supervenience relation. The remaining problem is to construct a systematic argument for the basic model which can reveal structural causation as an alternative to supervenience theory.-
