In the scene of modern arts, demarcation between pure arts and popular arts has become obscure. 'Mixing of popular arts and fine arts', 'Joining of media and arts', 'Mix and match between genres' are common phrases we can easily encounter everyday. Hence, in the scene where arts permeated in our lives and expanded more and more, it is not appropriate to criticize or protect them based on cultural theories or art philosophies. This thesis questions that why public arts are not justified among traditional theorists and, by providing rebuttal on their judgements, it will also prove their opinion is incorrect. Further, we will explore the fundamentals of aestheitc theories for popular arts and protect the artistic legitimacy of popular arts by examing 『Art as Experience』 written by John Dewey. The view points on criticism about popular arts are studied by diving them into three differnet aspects: aesthetic criticism, political and social criticism, and criticism on popular arts suggested by Abraham Kaplan. Aesthetic criticism is the oldest form of criticism and it focuses on the quality of artistic standard considered in the appreciation. Dwight Macdonald, a renowned theorist in the field, criticized popular arts because popular arts, as formed in mass production, debilitate arts of high quality and therby degrade the overall quality of arts. But this opinion is falsely based on the fact that popular arts are always inferior and lack of good quality. This is view point under arrogance of high quality arts as it judges the popular arts by limited standards from certain form of arts. Political and social viewpoint on popular arts goes back long way to the studies of Frankfurt School. Horkheimer and Adorno devised the term 'Cultural industry' and criticized popular arts because it dilutes political power inflicted on the working class as it makes them follow the reality and become subjects for 'adaptation' is that the popular arts have no power at all to stimulate or compensate for aesthetic attetion from society. But it turen out that many popular arts, including the Raps, intellectually stimulate others and create variety and changes by criticizing the social trend for improvement. Abraham Kaplan's Criticism on popular arts in a new method that is not approached from high standard of advanced arts. But his idea is also based on the criticism that denies that popular is a force that pursues aesthetic possibility. Kaplan criticize that popular arts lack forms and this is due to his ignorance on the formational complexity and mutual relevance between texts. Popular arts try an experiment of new forms, and produce to create theire own texts. Today, popular arts are still not gaining justification from conventional theorists despite its long history and practical tradition. I examined the 『Art as Experience』 by John Dewey, a pragmatism theorist, as i admit partly the weakness of popular arts, in the purpose of evaluating the advantages and potentials objectively and defending the aesthetic justification of popular arts. Aesthetics from pragmatism challenges traditional aesthetic values-practicality and aesthetics- to expand the concept of aesthetics. Expansion of aesthetic means a escape from segregation from arts and real life. Supporting popular arts through pragmatism is to philosophically admit the difference between cultural contexts. Dewey sets new meaning for the word 'Experience'. The term 'Experience' in his meaning is human's transaction with nature, that is, a mutual metamorphism or all cognizing processes that follows wide-ranged relational activities between humans and environments. Therefore, transaction means to him as somethingthat exerted on individuals and their environments or activities that generate effects through a medium. Experience, as explained above, is a process of a mutual metamorphism between living things and their environments. In other words, it is an argument about continuance of the nature and experience. Therefore, 'Experience' theory of Dewey takes positon of center for his arts theory. Dewey explained the meaning of art using the concept of 'An Experience'. An Experience stands for individual experience in which organics are mixed well in their surroundings and creates satisfactory and harmonious experience. 'An experience' is found in not only Arts but contemplations in other fields of studies such as philosophy or science. This position of Dewey opposes the division of rationality and emotions. Frequently, it is commonly known that arts represent emotion and science and philosophy represent rationality but the idea that states an expereince is possible from all experiences suggests there must be emotions involved in science and philosophy as well as in arts where an experience is supported. Dewey setsagainst traditional dualism which is natire/experience, theory/practice, art/science, pure arts/popular arts, body/mind, subject/object. Dewey, as described above, explained arts as rhythmial daily life of humans tht expands life force with mutual interaction between individuals and their environments. He maintains that arts, not the noble field which surpassed daily life, are closely related to daily life. It means an experience of actual daily life to him. Based on Dewey's theories in 『Art as Experience』 I intend to protect popular arts that are expressed in more various fashions, defying the conventional division between pure and popular arts. I also intend to pay attention on positive fuctionality of arts which bonds us more comprehensively and completely by continuity from arts to real life. By accepting Dewey's theories which state joys lie in everyday life and promote closer relationship between nature and humans, we should practice life in art in every moment of our lives without mindless protection and insisting on 'Arts for arts'.;현대의 예술계에서는 순수 예술과 대중 예술 사이의 경계를 나누기가 모호해졌다.
