The purpose of this thesis is to explain the diverse possibilities of interpretation in postmodernist art, according to the social, cultural context. While approaching to the changeable meanings of postmodernist art, this thesis was based upon the allegorical method of Craig Owens which regards postmodernist art as to contain the 'allegorical impulse' and develop its meanings by layering texts. The word 'allegory' originated from the greek term 'allegoria'. Initially, allegory was used as a metaphorical rhetoric which expressed abstract concepts by layering two different stories or images. However, its use was expanded while it was combined with religious art and historical painting. For example, in the historical paintings of Neo-Classicism, the Greek and Roman as the past and France as the present were placed in juxtaposition. This was intended to expose the allegorical meaning which indicates the justice of French Revolution, by comparing the formal beauty of classicism and ideology of Roman republican to the current circumstances. Yet, allegory was denied by modernist art, which claimed for transcendence and autonomy, and created its meaning completely by itself. For modernism, the allegorical viewing was unnecessary, since allegory infers the meaning through the external elements of the work. The pluralistic cultural aspect of the 20th century weakened formalism, autonomy, self-sufficiency of modernism and formed the space of postmodernism where art and life was brought together. At this point, art under postmodernism exposes its meaning within the social and cultural context surrounding the work, and thereupon the interpretation of the work becomes unsteady and changeable. On this, Owens explains the trait of postmodernist art through the allegorical method. Allegory reveals its meaning by overlapping two dissimilar text, and at this moment the meaning of image does not implicate the original sense but it is rather diversified corresponding to the varying explanation of the viewers. The allegorical method of Owens holds many parts in common with the theory of allegory in "The German Tragic Drama" by Walter Benjamin. The process of assembling pieces of meaning from the mosaically fragmented world is similar to the allegorical trait of Postmodernism which dismantles the original meaning of the work and transforms it into a different context. Owens approach towards the connection of postmodernist art and allegory using three examples which are appropriation, site-specificity, accumulation and juxtaposition. The allegorical meaning using appropriation is revealed through the process of overlapping the original indication of the image and the new meaning which the artist granted while using this image. Also, the allegorical meaning associated with site-specificity appears when the work and the topographical and historical speciality, and psychological effect surrounding the work are laid one upon another. The method of accumulation and juxtaposition accepts the various meanings created by the viewer as the allegorical meaning through the juxtaposition of disparate objects or opposed concepts. Therefore, the allegorical meaning represented in postmodernist art allows the meaning of the work to be abundant, and admits the work to perform as the passage to reflect the social and cultural reality.;본 논문은 포스트모더니즘 미술이 사회, 문화적 맥락에 따른 다양한 해석의 가능성을 지닌다는 점을 ‘알레고리적 특성’을 통해 설명하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
