As the computer becomes indispensable to our everyday lives, many people have tried to find an effective way to design better user interfaces. Since the purposesand the functions of a system and the features of the prospective users, such as age, gender, cultural background and job, are so various, it is hard to make a general rule applicable to ‘every’ system. However, we may start with discussions about how a system should be in a particular situation. For example, what should be considered when we design a system for Asian girls? In this study, we suggest a model of user interface design for Asians and Westerners focused on cross cultural differences theories. The theories used for this thesis were borrowed from Asian and Western ancient philosophy and Hofstede’s and Hall’s cross cultural differences theories. The fundamental difference between Asian and Western culture is whether the relationship in the whole is emphasized or the property of the every single part is emphasized. From this point of view, Hall pointed out that Asian culture was Polychronic and High-Context culture, whereas Western culture was Monochronic and Low-Context culture. Hofstede said that Asians had higher tendency to avoid uncertainty than Westerners in his uncertainty avoidance theory. This philosophical difference between Asian and Western culture can be applied to elements of interface design, such as the contents, structure or categorization of a system, as follows: Asians prefer contents that help to understand the whole context and attach importance to the relationships between them. Since the structure of a system should be clear enough to understand the whole structure, Asians like to see as many contents as possible at once, and the structure should not be deep. The contents need to be categorized depending on whether each one is related to the others of a category. On the other hands, Westerners prefer contents with detailed information about the properties of an individual component. For the structure, a relationship between every step should be logical and one step should be shown at one time. This kind of system tends to be deep and have many steps, which is acceptable to Westerners. Westerners like to categorize the items according to similarity. Therefore, the features of each element are more important than the relationship with others. To verify this hypothesis, two different prototype systems for Asians and Westerners were made based on the findings mentioned above and tested with 30 Asians and 21 Westerners. The feedback from the test was analyzed using Independent T-test, and the result indicates that the system customization which considers the cultural background of the prospective users contributes to a better user interface design. Although what has been proposed in this study is not a theory or law, the theoretical framework suggested can be applied to user interface design for users with different cultural backgrounds through studying verified theories on primary culture. I hope this work can contribute to the advance in the field of user interface design, which is in its incipient stage.;컴퓨터가 점점 우리 생활에 많은 부분을 차지함에 따라 사용자가 컴퓨터 시스템을 쉽고 편리하게 사용하도록 인터페이스 디자인을 하기 위한 노력이 계속되고 있다.
