Dialectal Variations of English and Their Effects on the Production and Perception of Second Language Learners

Abstract

Many studies have examined whether linguistic experience in English-speaking countries has an effect on the production and perception of L2 (second language) learners of English. However, there have been few findings concerning the effects of dialectal variations of English on L2 learners. Thus, this study compares vowel quality differences in American, British, and Australian English, and observes the effects of these differences on the production and perception of Korean learners of English who have lived in one of those countries. Both production and perception tests were conducted for this thesis. The subjects comprised 9 native speakers of English (3 Americans, 3 Englanders, and 3 Australians), and 15 Koreans who had been in one of those countries for at least a year. All participants were female. The main targets of the present study were 11 English vowels. The production test objectives were to identify the dialectal differences between the three varieties of English, and to discover whether these differences were also found in the productions of the L2 learners. The results verified that American, British, and Australian English each has its own vowel system; however, unlike the native speakers, the vowel productions of the Korean participants did not differ from one another-rather, they shared common features. The perception test objective was to examine how the experience in one of the three English-speaking countries affected the perceptions of the Korean learners. For the perception test, recordings of the native speakers in the production test were used. The participants were instructed to answer which of five words had been produced by native speakers. The results for all Korean participants showed similar patterns-as in the production test-regardless of country. As a result, this thesis concluded that, in terms of dialectal influence on L2 perception, the Korean participants appeared to be rarely affected by the language variety of the country in which they had spent time. This result may have stemmed from the subjects' lengths of residence in each English-speaking country being too short for them to form new phonetic categories based on the local varieties. Also, their linguistic experiences in one of the three countries seemed insufficient to exceed the amount of American English that they had experienced in Korea.;영어 지역 방언은 각기 독특한 모음 체계를 가지고 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 이에 대해 많은 연구들이 이루어졌지만, 그 차이가 제2언어 학습자에게도 영향을 미치는지에 대해 본격적으로 밝히는 연구는 없었다. 이에, 본 논문에서는 미국, 영국, 호주영어 모음 체계의 차이점과 그 지역적 차이가 한국인 영어 학습자의 영어 모음 발화와 인지에 미치는 영향을 밝혀보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 미국, 영국, 호주영어의 모국어 화자들과 각 나라에서 최소 1년 동안 머문 적이 있는 한국인 영어 학습자들을 대상으로 발화 실험과 인지 실험이 실행되었다. 실험에서는 11개의 영어 모음이 사용되었다. 영어 모국어 화자들의 발화 실험을 통하여, 미국, 영국, 호주영어는 각기 다른 모음 체계를 가지고 있는 것으로 드러났다. 그러나 한국어 화자들에게서는 이러한 차이가 거의 드러나지 않았다. 이는 한국인 영어 학습자들이 각국에서 가진 언어적 경험이 평균 13.33개월 밖에 안 되었기 때문에, 이 기간 내에 영어 방언 간의 모음 차이를 인지하고 발화까지 연습하기에는 부족한 것으로 풀이되었다. 인지 실험에서는 미국, 영국, 호주에서 살다 온 한국인 영어 학습자들이 각 나라의 영어 모음을 더 잘 인지할 수 있는지 알아 보기 위하여 그들에게 각 나라의 영어 모음을 들려주고 식별하게 하였다. 그러나 본 실험에 참여한 한국어 화자들은 서로 다른 언어적 경험을 가졌음에도 불구하고, 오히려 영어 모음을 인지하는 데 공통적인 특징을 나타내었다. 이는 발화 실험과 마찬가지로 각국에서의 언어적 경험이 부족했음을 드러내는 결과로 풀이된다. 또한 이는 한국어 화자들은 영어 모음들의 차이점을 잘 인식하지 못했기 때문에 발화도 할 수 없었다고 해석될 수 있으며, 인지적 동화 모델(Perceptual Assimilation Model, Best 1995)과도 부합되는 결과라고 할 수 있다. 본 연구를 통해 각 영어권 국가 내에서의 짧은 거주기간보다는 한국에서 중, 고등학교를 포함한 최소 6년 이상 미국영어를 배웠던 것이 더 큰 언어적 경험으로 작용했다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 한국인 영어 학습자들이 발화 실험과 인지 실험에서 비슷한 결과를 보였다는 점에서 피실험자들이 영어 모음을 발화할 때 모국어인 한국어의 영향이 크게 나타났다는 것을 발견할 수 있었다.
