계몽주의와 여성고딕소설

Abstract

본 논문은 여성고딕소설의 특징을 잘 보여주는 래드클리프의 마지막 작품인『이태리인, 혹은 검은 옷을 입은 참회자들의 고해소 The Italian, or the Confessional of the Black Penitents(1796)』를 통하여 고딕소설이 이성 중심의 세계관과 새로운 계급과 이데올로기에 어떻게 접근해 가는지 살펴보고자 한다. 제1장에서는 남성 중심적 계몽주의의 흐름 속에서 비이성적 존재로 치부되어 온 여성이 어떻게 자신들의 이성적 능력을 드러내 보였는지를 살펴보고, 그 과정에서 반계몽적 장르로 여겨지는 고딕소설이 계몽적 특징을 지닌 사실주의 소설과 연결되는 지점에 놓여있음을 연구할 것이다. 제 2장에서는 여성의 이성적 능력을 주장하고 활발히 정치적 논의에 참여한 초기 여성 사상가들의 모습과 『이태리인』속의 여주인공 엘레나를 통해 당대 여성들의 이성과 계몽주의에 대한 인식을 고찰한다. 교육 받지 못한 여성 또한 순수한 이성을 통해 진실에 다가가는 모습은 여성의 이성적 능력을 증명한다. 제 3장에서는 여성고딕소설에 드러난 감성에 대한 여성작가들의 의식을 통해 여성의 감성을 살펴본다. 여성의 예민한 신경으로 인해 여성의 감성에 대한 부정적인 인식이 팽배한 상황에서, 여성고딕소설가들은 이성과 결합한 형태인 절제된 감성을 그려냄으로써 여성의 감성을 이상적 가치로 재인식한다. 제 4장은 계몽주의의 영향으로 경험론적 서술을 통해 현실을 사실적으로 그려낸 18세기 문학의 풍토 속에 등장한 혁명적 장르인 고딕소설이 지닌 함의에 대한 연구이다. 초자연적 사건의 이성적 해결은 이성에 대한 믿음을 토대로 한 계몽주의의 영향을 보여준다. 또한 미덕을 달성한 두 주인공의 결혼이 제시하는 새로운 가정의 창조는 여성고딕소설이 개인의 내면과 가정에 중점을 둔 사실주의 소설의 연장선에 놓여있음을 보여준다. 이상의 고찰을 통하여 본 논문은 래드클리프의 마지막 고딕소설 『이태리인』을 통하여 기존의 연구에서 반계몽적 범주로 여겨진 여성과 고딕소설이 계몽주의의 흐름 속에 위치하였음을 밝히고자 한다.;This thesis investigates the question of female reason and Enlightenment as it relates to the popularity of the female Gothic novel through a close reading of Ann Radcliffe's Italian. Women and Gothic novels written by women can be firmly situated within the discourse of Enlightenment, despite the commonly held misconceptions that women simply have no rational faculty, and that Gothic novels depict a dark and supernatural, irrational world. As recent feminist historical research shows, many seventeenth and eighteenth-century women embraced Descartes' philosophy which laid the ground for arguments for the equal rational capacities of the sexes, and they employed those arguments to speak up against the inferior education bestowed upon women. Ann Radcliffe can be viewed as fully taking part in these efforts. The second chapter of the thesis shows the power of female reason illustrated in Italian's heroine Ellena. Her refined mind may lack knowledge gained through experience, but is illuminated by pure reason. Radcliffe explores the extensive range of the female mind through intense inner reflection prompted by Gothic devices such as confinement and oppression, and affirms the ability of the rational mind to rise above all difficulties. The third chapter explores the question of female sensibility. Although female sensibility was strongly criticized for its excesses in the period, Radcliffe depicts female sensibility as a combination of reason and feeling, and recognizes its moral and spiritual force as a source of female virtue. The final chapter argues that Gothic novels written by women are situated within the emergence of realism and participates in the re-location of virtue in the private sphere. Through a close reading of Radcliffe's The Italian, this thesis shows how the emphasis on female reason in Gothic novels by women can reveal a strong critique of the patriarchal world, as well as an aspiration for a new order regulated by a rational female sensibility. Through this reading, we can see how the female Gothic can be read as participating in the construction of the new Enlightenment ideology that locates virtue in the private sphere.
