The International Labour Organization (ILO) reveals that child labour is still a problem that all continents grapple with. Pragmatic steps have been taken by both individual governments of developed and undeveloped countries and international organizations globally to combat this phenomenon. However, this problem still persists in all parts of the world especially in sub-Saharan Africa. This study analyzes the incidence of child labour in Ghana by taking the differences in regional and economic activities into account. In Ghana, child labour manifests in various forms and types according to the economic activities in different regions. Apart from poverty, illiteracy, institutional failures, socio-economic and cultural/traditional practices being the major factors, the characteristics and nature of the economy of the different regions also accounts for the increase in child labour. Using data from the Ghana Child Labour Survey 2001/2006, Cocoa Labour Survey 2007/2008 and other government publications mainly from the Ghana Statistical Service, this study reveals that the economy of a region and industries reinforces child labour in Ghana. The argument made is that in Ghana children are driven to labour not only by the socio-cultural norms and practices but also by the nature of the economic activities of the different regions demands that child labour. The study clearly points out the need to take into consideration regional economy differences when designing efforts to mitigate child labour problem in Ghana. Other recommendations which aim to combat child labor in order to improve the intervention mechanisms in place in Ghana are also explored.-
