Investment activities and FDI growth in the Republic of Kazakhstan, 1993-2008

Abstract

This study attempted to examine determinants of the FDI growth relevance to Kazakhstan by examining relevant data for the period of 1993 - 2008. Well-known policy and international factors were accounted as important characteristics of FDI growth in the case of Kazakhstan. The study examines factors using methods of qualitative analysis (mainly analysis of legislature) as well as historical- comparative research. As a dependent variable, the study chose the FDI growth of the Kazakh economy. Independent variables of the study are policy and international factors. Mentioned factors were used as suggested in previous studies on investment climate creation and improvement. After analyzing Kazakh legislature and world investment reports, as well as Kazakh official documents, the study revealed that policy adoption and improvement, and establishment of international cooperation are the primary catalysts for FDI attraction and growth. Based on the results of analysis, the study gave conclusion and suggestion.;본 연구는 1993년부터 2008년까지 카자흐스탄에 대한 외국인 직접 투자(FDI : foreign direct investment)의 증가 요인을 검토하고자 하였다. 카자흐스탄의 경우 외국인 직접 투자 증가의 주요 요인으로 정책적 그리고 국제적 요소들이 상당 부분 차지하였다. 본 연구의 분석은 역사 - 비교 연구 등과 같은 질적 분석 방법(주로 법률 에 대한 분석)을 활용하였다. 종속변수로는 카자흐스탄 경제의 외국인 직접 투자 성장을, 독립 변수로는 정책 및 국제 요인들을 선정하였다. 위 요인들은 투자 환경 조성과 발전에 대한 이전 연구들에서 제안된 요소들이다. 카자흐스탄 법률 와 공문서 및 세계 투자 보고서를 분석한 결과, 본 연구는 정책 채택과 개선, 국제 협력 수립이 외국인 직접 투자 유치와 성장의 주요한 촉매제임을 밝혀냈다. 이러한 분석 과를 기반으로 결론과 제안을 제시하였다.
