Likert형 척도의 반응 형식에 따른 양호도 비교

Abstract

본 연구는 Likert 척도의 반응 형식 중 반응범주의 수와 중립반응범주 유무에 따라 척도의 신뢰도와 타당도에 차이가 있는지 알아보고, 만약 차이가 있다면 그 차이가 어디에서 비롯되었는지, 특히 성격검사에서 중립반응범주 포함 여부에 따라 어느 조건에서 척도가 더 양호한 가를 알아보는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 이론적 탐구를 통하여 4점 척도, 5점 척도, 6점 척도, 7점 척도로 반응범주의 수를 제한하고, 각 척도 조건의 응답치를 비교, 분석하였다. 우선 각 조건에서 응답치의 기술통계치와 내적 합치도 계수를 살펴보았고, 동일한 요인구조를 유지하는지 확인하고 각 척도 조건의 측정 동등성을 검토하였으며, 문항반응이론에 근거한 문항의 양호도를 검증하여 반응범주의 수와 중립반응범주 유무에 있어서 차이가 나타나는지 분석하였다. 종합적으로 볼 때, Likert형 척도는 5점 척도 혹은 6점 척도를 사용하는 경우 척도의 양호도가 4점 척도와 7점 척도를 사용할 때보다 더 좋으며, 검사의 목적과 문항의 내용에 따라 수검자에게서 넓은 응답반응을 얻기 위해서는 6점 척도를 이용할 것이 권고되며, 모형을 검증하기 위한 연구에서는 5점 척도가 유용하게 사용될 수 있을 것임을 시사하는 결과가 도출되었다.;There is simply no definitive answer to the question of using an optimal number and an neutral point in response format on Likert Scale. In the response format, the use of an odd or even number of categories are an issue. An odd number results in neutral response category which allows the respondents to avoid committing either a positive or negative direction. This study compares among 4-category and 6-category scale with 5-category and 7-category scale to know which one has better validity and reliability. The subjects of this research were 1139 college students. The items is that part of personality test for adult were used of the general situation. The results are summarized. As for the Classical Test Theory, the validity of neutral response category is not significantly different among all conditions. But internal consistency increases along with the number of response categories. As for Item Response Theory, item information function gets wider respondents property as adding the number of categories. For the results, 5 and 6-point scales overally has better fits than 4 and 7-point scales for general psychological tests. Specifically, 6-point is recommended for differenciating a wide variety of respondents, and 5-point is for examining the theoretical models from the tests. In conclusion, this research has two implications to psychological tests. First, the existence of neutral response format does not significantly influence to differenciate the response of the tests. Second, it is suggested that 5-point Likert Scale would be useful for general situation and 6-point Likert Scale would be appropriate for the specific situation.
