학업적 완벽주의 척도 개발 및 타당화

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 학업과 전문능력 개발을 위하여 수행하고 숙달하는 과정에서 나타나는 완벽주의 성향을 측정하기 위한 ‘학업적 완벽주의 척도’를 개발하고, 그 신뢰도와 타당도를 검증하는 것이다. 본 연구가 진행된 절차와 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기존에 사용되어 온 완벽주의 척도가 주로 일반적인 상황에서의 완벽주의 성향을 측정한다는 한계를 보완하기 위하여, 수행-관련 과정을 상세화하여 동기-수행-평가 과정에서 나타나는 완벽주의 성향의 측정으로 맥락을 구체화시켰다. 또한, 요인이 불분명하고, 요인의 내용이 완벽주의의 본질을 측정하지 않고 있다는 선행 연구의 제언을 받아들여, 완벽주의에 대한 이론적 배경을 고찰하고, 기존에 있던 완벽주의 척도를 검토하여 새롭게 요인을 설정하고 문항을 제작하였다. 둘째, 학업적 완벽주의 성향을 측정하기 위하여 제작한 예비 검사의 문항 양호도를 확인하기 위하여 고등학생 391명을 대상으로 검사를 시행하고 예비 검사 문항의 양호도를 확인하여 31문항으로 구성된 본 검사를 구성하였다. 전국의 일반계고, 과학고, 예술고에 재학 중인 고등학생 567명을 대상으로 시행한 본 검사를 통하여 타당한 기술 통계치와 내적 합치도(Cronbach's α)를 나타낸 31문항으로 구성된 척도를 최종적으로 구성하였다. 셋째, 탐색적 요인분석과 확인적 요인분석을 통하여 학업적 완벽주의 척도의 하위 요인을 확인하고, 하위 요인으로 이루어진 모형의 적합도를 검증하였다. 그 결과, 학업적 완벽주의는 동기 과정에서 나타나는 (1)자기-접근적 완벽주의, (2)자기-회피적 완벽주의, (3)타인-접근적 완벽주의와 수행 과정에서 나타나는 (4)완벽주의 자기조절, (5)완벽주의 행동지연, 그리고 평가 과정에서 나타나는 (6)완벽주의 가혹평가로 명명할 수 있는 하위 요인으로 구성할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 넷째, 학업적 완벽주의 척도와 심리적 건강, 학업동기, 성취 수준 간의 상관과 법칙론적 연결망 분석을 통하여 척도의 구인타당도와 준거-관련 타당도 증거를 제시하였다. 학업적 완벽주의의 하위 요인들은 심리적 건강, 실패내성, 방어적 비관주의, 성취 수준과 이론적으로 적절하게 설명할 수 있는 관계를 보임으로써 어느 정도의 구인타당도를 가지고 있음을 확인해 주었다. 또한 자기-접근적 완벽주의, 자기-회피적 완벽주의, 완벽주의 자기조절 하위 요인은 높은 실패내성, 높은 삶의 만족, 높은 성취 수준 등 비교적 긍정적인 변인들과는 정적인 상관을, 타인-접근적 완벽주의, 완벽주의 행동지연, 완벽주의 가혹평가는 낮은 실패내성, 낮은 삶의 만족, 높은 우울감 등 비교적 부정적인 변인들과는 부적 상관을 나타냄으로써 본 연구에서 제작된 학업적 완벽주의 척도의 준거-관련 타당도의 증거를 제시할 수 있었다. 다섯째, 학업적 완벽주의 척도가 영재와 성취 우수 집단을 대상으로 각각 일반 집단과 비교하여 하위 요인에서 차이가 나타나는지 확인하였으며, 나타난 차이가 영재성과 우수 성취 가운데 어떠한 특성을 가진 집단을 더욱 잘 변별해주는지 확인하기 위하여 판별 분석을 시행하였다. 그 결과, 학업적 완벽주의 척도는 우수성취-영재집단과 일반성취-영재집단보다 우수성취-일반집단의 특성을 더 잘 설명하는 것으로 나타났는데, 이는 학업적 완벽주의 성향이 영재성보다는 우수 성취 수준을 더 잘 설명하는 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 이러한 결과는 학교 장면에서 영재로 분류되는 집단에 성취 우수자들이 다수 포함되기 때문에 완벽주의 성향이 영재들의 특성이라고 설명하기 쉽지만, 완벽주의 성향은 영재성의 잠재적인 측면보다는 성취도와 더 큰 관련이 있는 것으로 보아야 함을 시사한다. 본 연구에서 개발된 학업적 완벽주의 척도의 사용은 수행과 같은 맥락 특수적(context-specific) 상황에서 완벽주의의 발현 과정과 관련 변인에 대한 상세한 논의가 가능하게 할 것으로 기대한다. 또한, 학업과 전문성 개발 과정에서의 완벽주의 척도는 최근에 더욱 불거지고 있는 학업 우수 청소년의 우울, 자살 등의 이슈와 관련하여 심리적 예측 변인을 확인하는 동시에, 성취 우수 등의 교육효과와 관련된 변인들에 대한 예측 가능성에 대한 정보들을 제공할 것으로 기대하여 향후 상담 및 교육 장면에서 유용하게 활용할 수 있으리라 기대한다.;The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the Perfectionism Scale specifically in the context of academic performance. This scale focuses on the context of academic performance, considered as a representative context explained by perfectionism. Several previous researches about essentials of perfectionism and scales were analyzed, and extracted into new constructs of this scale. The preliminary tests were administered to 391 high school students, and the final scale with 6 constructs and 31 items was confirmed respectively by inter-item consistency and exploratory factor analysis. In the purpose of presenting the evidence of validity, total 567 high school students, including 184 gifted and 149 high-performance students(not regarding the number of intersection), were sampled. As the result of confirmatory factor analysis, the model with 6 factors shows reasonable goodness of fits. The final constructs of this scale are included into three phases of performance process. Motivation phase has (1) self-oriented approach, (2) self-oriented avoidance, and (3) other-oriented approach, performance phase has (4) self-regulation, and (5) behavioral procrastination, and finally, evaluation phase has (6) harsh evaluation. The evidence of criteria-related validity was suggested via correlation and nomological network analysis. Psychological well-being, academic motivations and performance achievement are revealed to mutually explain with perfectionism. In specific, self-oriented approach, self-oriented avoidance, and self-regulation positively correlate with life satisfaction, failure-tolerance, and performance achievement. However, other-oriented approach, behavioral procrastination, and harsh evaluation are revealed to significantly influence depression. This scale was used to explain the constructs of perfectionism by giftedness and high achievement. In order to remove the covariate effects of giftedness and high achievement, subjects were divided into three groups; high-achievement gifted, high-achievement non-gifted, general-achievement gifted. As a result, this perfectionism scale is well-explained by high-achievement, rather than giftedness. In specific, self-oriented approach and self-oriented avoidance are known for properly expecting high-achievement groups. Thus, the results of previous research that perfectionism is the representative character for gifted might be caused from the covariate between gifted and high achievement, and this research suggests that perfectionism is the psychological construct predicting high achievement groups. The perfectionism in performance context scale is expected to be used in further researches, especially scrutinizing related psychological variables and phenomenon. Also, it might be used to explain adolescents' maladaptive behavior, depression and suicide in academic context.
