Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate how Behavioral Activation System(BAS), Behavioral Inhibition System(BIS), and father/mother parenting behavior predict anger expression styles of male/female high school students. This study was also purposed to examine moderation effect of father/mother parenting behavior between relationship of BAS, BIS and anger expression styles. Four hundred and eighteen students(144 boys, 274 girls) from three high schools in Seoul were participated in this study. The participants were asked to complete measures of Korean-BAS/BIS Scales, Korean-Parental Bonding Instrument(PBI), and State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory(STAXI-Korean Version). The data were analyzed by t-test, Pearson's correlation, multiple regression and hierarchical regression, and SPSS 15.0 was used. The results of the study were as follows: 1. To examine gender differences on major variables, t-test was used. There were significant gender differences on BIS, father's care, mother's overprotection, father's overprotection and anger-control. Specifically, BIS and father's care level were significantly higher in girls' group, but mother's overprotection, father's overprotection, and anger-control level were higher in boys' group. 2. The study used correlation analysis to examine relationship of major variables. The result showed that BAS had significant positive correlation with anger-out while BIS had significant positive correlation with anger-in. BAS had significant negative correlation with anger-control, but mother's care was positively related to anger-control. In father/mother parenting behavior subscales, mother's parenting behavior subscales had significant positive correlation with father's parenting behavior subscales in girls' group. But these correlations were not significant in boys' group. 3. To investigate the power of prediction of variables to anger expression styles, data was analysed by multiple regression. In boys' group, BAS and mother's care significantly contributed to the prediction of anger-out. Only BIS significantly predicted anger-in. BAS and mother's care significantly contributed to the prediction of anger-control. In girls' group, BAS, mother's care, and father's overprotection significantly contributed to the prediction of the anger-out. BIS, mother's care, and father's overprotection significantly contributed to the prediction of the anger-in. Only BAS significantly predicted anger-control. 4. To verify the moderation effect of father/mother parenting behavior in relationship between BAS, BIS and anger expression style, the data was analyzed by hierarchical regression supported from Aiken and West(1991). In both group, mother's care moderated the relation between BAS and anger-out. In girls' group, mother's care moderated the relation between BIS and anger-in.
