무용창작작품 『네잎 크로버』에 나타난 슈퍼우먼 신드롬에 관한 연구

Abstract

More and more women have been entering the workforce rapidly as the feminist have tried to improve the women's rights after the birth of feminism at the end of 18th century. Although women have been taking part in the public area and the social recognition for women has been improved in the revival of the liberal feminism, they failed to share their loads with men in the private area. Finally, women confronted the undesirable situation where they are obliged to take the burden of both public and private area. Therefore the new social problem for woman named 'superwoman syndrome' has been issued. 'superwoman syndrome' means the physical and mental stress syndrome of the woman who works hard to manage multiple roles of a worker, a homemaker, a mother etc. Women need to find their own identity and keep their mind stable by recognizing their current situation and asking help to other people to cope with the syndrome. The purpose of this research was to choreograph the dance performance 'four-leaf clover' and find the characteristics of the superwoman syndrome recognizing it as a modern social problem for woman. This work suggested modern women to find their own identity and would make known the appropriateness of reform of personal and social consciousness. The theme and constitution of the work 'four-leaf clover' could be summarized as followings. First, this work described the 'superwoman' as an ideal type for modern woman and the characteristics of 'superwoman syndrome'. The choreographer tried to awake audience that the pursuit for ideal type of superwoman was appropriate for true happiness. The title of 'four-leaf clover' which usually means fortune was compared to 'superwoman'. Second, the composition of space and characteristics of movement depicted the boundary between family and workplace. In chapter 1 and 3, the shape of floor was like curve and shows less dense. The form of movement was also slowly presented by curve. In chapter 2, the shape of floor was shown as straight line. The movement was fast and straight. In particular, the subject between roles of family and society was well described by the contrasting physical movement and partition of space. Also, the symptoms of superwoman syndrome were depicted by making different shapes using body. Third, the music showed contrast for each chapter. The music was lyrical and slow for chapter 1 and 3, meanwhile it was threatening and fast for chapter 2. The lamprophony of a child made an audience feel like staying at home and hopeful lyrics was associated with a baby in chapter 1 and 3. On the contrary, fast beat in chapter 2 was well showing the impetuous and anxious mental state using electronic sound with percussion. Fourth, several objects made various images for each scene. Particularly, the water bucket from usual life were transformed to dissimilar images and the combination among these buckets, light bulb and muffler made five different images. The final combination of four buckets and light bulb embodied the 'four-leaf clover'. Fifth, stage lighting added the visual effect harmonizing with the bulb light inside objects of water buckets. The constrained space of family was focused by illumination. The new space could be made by showing movement to other space at final scene. The visual effect was formed that the density of objects was shown to be low by harmonizing the light of objects and thin stage lighting. As mentioned above, the dance choreography 'four-leaf clover' suggested the transformation of personal consciousness and the necessity of asking help to family and society for women who dream superwoman.;18세기 말 페미니즘(feminism)이 등장한 이후, 수많은 페미니스트(feminist)들의 노력과 사회적 인식의 변화로 오늘날 여성의 사회 진출은 급속도로 확대되었다. 특히, 자유주의 페미니즘(liberal feminism)의 재 부흥으로 인하여 여성들은 공적 영역인 사회로 빠르게 진출하게 되었지만, 사적인 영역인 가정에서는 남성과 여성의 합리적인 역할 분담에 실패하였다. 이에 여성은 두 가지 영역을 모두 부담해야하는 결과를 초래 하였고, 결국 이러한 이중 부담은 슈퍼우먼 신드롬이라는 여성의 사회 문제를 발생시켰다. 슈퍼우먼 신드롬(superwoman syndrome)이란 여성이 사회 활동가, 직장인, 아내, 어머니, 자식이라는 다양한 역할을 완벽하게 수행하고자 할 때에 경험하게 되는 일련의 신체적･심리적, 그리고 대인 관계상의 스트레스 증후군이다. 이와 같은 문제를 해결하기 위해서 여성들은 올바른 자아 인식을 통하여 자신의 정체성을 파악하고, 완벽주의의 틀에서 벗어나 자신이 처한 현실을 인정하고 주변에 도움을 요청 할 수 있는 마음의 여유를 갖는 것이 필요하다. 그러나 이것은 개인의 노력만으로는 해결이 불가능하기 때문에 가족 구성원과 사회의 도움이 함께 요구된다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 페미니즘의 흐름 속에 나타난 슈퍼우먼 신드롬을 현대 사회의 여성 문제로 인식하여 그 배경과 특징 및 해결방안을 조사하고, 슈퍼우먼 신드롬의 성향이 드러난 타 장르 작품들을 살펴보았다. 이를 토대로 무용창작작품 「네잎 크로버」를 안무하고, 그 속에 나타난 슈퍼우먼 신드롬의 특성과 그 표현성을 살펴봄으로써 현대 여성들에게 진정한 자아 발견의 필요성을 제시하고, 개인적·사회적인 의식 전환의 당위성을 찾는데 연구의 목적이 있다. 무용창작작품 「네잎 크로버」를 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 무용창작작품 「네잎 크로버」는 현대 사회 여성의 이상형으로서의 슈퍼우먼과 그로 인한 갈등의 결과물인 슈퍼우먼 신드롬을 묘사함으로써 ‘슈퍼우먼’이라는 이상형이 진정한 행복에 이르는 삶의 목표인지를 관객들에게 자각시키고자 한다. 이러한 의도에 따라 행운을 상징하는 ‘네잎 크로버’의 네잎을 자식, 직장, 아내, 부모에 비유함으로서 작품의 주제를 구성하였다. 둘째, 작품의 공간구성과 움직임의 특징은 장면 별로 대조를 이루면서, 가정과 직장의 경계를 구분하였다. 1장과 3장의 마루패턴은 대부분 곡선 적이고 밀도감이 낮으며, 움직임의 형태 역시 곡선의 느린 움직임으로 구성되었다. 이와 대조적으로 2장은 마루패턴이 직선적이며 밀도감이 높고, 움직임의 형태가 직선적이고 빠르며, 특히 움직임을 통해 다양한 신체모양(body shape)을 만들어 냄으로써 슈퍼우먼 신드롬의 증상들을 이미지화 하였다. 셋째, 작품에 사용되는 음악 역시 장면별로 대조를 이룬다. 1장과 3장의 음악은 서정적이고 느린 곡이며, 2장은 위협적이고 빠른 곡을 사용하였다. 1장과 3장에 나타나는 어린아이의 맑은 선율은 무대가 가정적인 공간임을 느끼게 하고, 시적 가사를 통해 ‘아기’를 연상하도록 구성하였다. 이에 반하여 2장의 타악기와 함께 일렉트로닉 음악의 빠른 비트의 곡은 현대적인 느낌을 주면서 조급하고 초조한 여성의 심리를 드러낸다. 넷째, 조명은 오브제 안에 장치된 불빛과 어우러져 시각적 효과를 더하여 준다. 1장에서는 조명을 통해 가정이라는 제한적인 공간을 부각시켰으며 2장 에서는 확장된 조명과 수축된 조명의 반복으로 여성이 겪는 갈등의 절정을 묘사하는데 효과를 주었다. 3장에서는 마지막 사선의 조명을 통해 현실과 다른 세계로 등장인물이 이동하는 모습을 보여 줌으로써 새로운 공간을 만들어 내었다. 또한 오브제의 불빛과 다양한 조도가 어우러져 생수통의 밀도가 낮아 가볍게 보이는 시각적 효과를 형성하였다. 또한 작품에 사용된 3개의 오브제는 장면별로 다양한 이미지를 만들어 내는데 효과를 더한다. 일상생활 속에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 생수통 4개를 전구와 스카프를 결합하여 다양하게 활용하였는데, 생수통 네 개의 조합과 전구의 불빛은 ‘네잎 크로버’의 이미지를 형상화 한 것이며, 가장 작은 생수통에 장치된 긴 전선과 형광 불빛은 탯줄과 태아를 상징 하는데 이는 곧 탄생하는 아기를 묘사한 것이다. 또한 스카프는 직장 여성의 이미지를 표현하고자 하였으며, 작품 등장시 입고 있던 흰색 겉옷은 부모의 사랑과 희생을 나타내었다. 이상과 같이 무용창작작품 「네잎 크로버」는 현대 여성들에게 진정한 자아 발견의 필요성을 제시함으로써 여성의 결혼과 사회진출에 대한 고정관념 그리고 사회적 관습에 대한 틀을 깨고, 여성의 역할과 위치를 재정립하는 일에 기여할 수 있게 되기를 기대하는 바이다.
