「번 더 플로어(Burn The Floor)」에 나타난 라틴댄스의 대중성에 관한 연구

Abstract

As the public in a modern society are becoming more economically abundant, their interests are headed towards quality of life and participation in cultural activity. Performing arts had become the center of a cultural activity which meets the public's demands; however, participation of audiences still remain low due to the fact that most of performing arts are difficult to comprehend by the public. The public wants easily understandable, fun, and enjoyable experience from their culture activity which most tend to participate after their busy and repetitive daily work routine. Where performing arts sit in the center of a culture industry, popularization of performing arts in a modern society is an essential problem to solve. Dance arts, originated from elitism, experiments various ways of differentiation in subject, formality, music and production in order to gain audience. Examples of popularization of dance arts are hip-hop, break dance, tango and salsa which are stage forms of folk dance. Characteristics of performing arts gained more popularity by gradually appealing its familiarity and simplicity to the public. The dance musical 「Burn the Floor」 which fulfills the public's demands and has succeeded internationally, contains a stage form of Latin dance derived from the public. The show gained popularity, interest, and a position in the performing arts industry. Along with the mass media's development, music and dance of the Latin America spreaded throughout the world, which can be a great advantage to appeal to the public. Familiar sounds, syncopation of African-American music, heart-beat sounding percussions, and the brilliance of the costumes are intimate facts that public finds entertaining. In this study, <The Samba>, <Leading Me On>, <The Latin Quarter>, and <Fire in the Ballroom> are the chosen chapters from 「Burn the Floor」. The show consists of eight chapters with stage form of Latin dance. The purpose of this study is to induce the continuance of dance arts' popularization by researching the following facts in those chapters: subject, movement, music, and costume. <The Samba> is a chapter composed of samba dances; it displays its characteristics of joy and delightfulness, and provide amusement to the audience. Moreover, the live percussion music provides emotionally friendly sounds due to its similiarity to the sound of a mother's heart to an unborn child. The chapter <Leading Me On> contains a theme of love, and it earns audience's sympathy by expressing the feelings such as happiness of love and painfulness of separation, triggering the emotion that everyone possesses. Use of object and dancers' various stage disposition displays form of performing arts. In <The Latin Quarter>, dancer approaches one of the audience to dance with; this form of participation of audience induces their sympathy to the performance. Also, the costume that highlights dancers' technical movements provides pleasure to the audience. <Fire in the Ballroom> maximizes their expression by producing the scenes of fights and seductions. The performance earns sympathy by differentiating tango to its stage form, and earns audience's focus by displaying voluptuous beauty and its costume of tango's feature. By studying 「Burn the Floor」 which has been successful at positioning itself in performing arts industry, a direction and solution to popularize dance arts has been discriminated.;현대사회의 대중들은 경제적인 여유를 갖게 되면서 삶의 질에 대한 관심과 문화생활의 참여도가 높아지게 되었으며, 이를 충족시켜주는 여가문화로 공연예술이 중추적인 역할을 하게 되었다. 하지만 대부분의 공연예술이 대중들에게 어렵게 인식되어 일반 관객의 참여가 여전히 저조한 실정이다. 반복되는 바쁜 일과 후에 갖는 문화생활로 현대인들은 쉽게 이해할 수 있고 재미와 즐거움을 경험하고 싶어하기 때문이다. 공연예술이 하나의 문화산업으로 자리매김하고 있는 현대사회에서 대중화는 공연예술이 갖는 중요한 과제라 할 수 있다. 무용예술도 초기의 엘리트적인 성향에서 관객에게 쉽게 다가가기 위한 방향으로 주제, 형식, 음악, 연출 등 다양한 방면에서 새로운 시도를 하고 있다. 무용예술 대중화의 예로 힙합이나 브레이크 댄스, 탱고나 살사 등과 같은 민속무용의 무대화를 들 수 있는데, 이러한 경향을 지닌 공연들은 관객들에게 무용예술이 보다 쉽고 가깝게 다가갈 수 있는 장르임을 보이면서 점차적으로 대중성을 확보하게 되었다. 이러한 대중들의 욕구를 충족시켜주며 세계적으로 흥행한 작품「번 더 플로어(Burn The Floor)」는 민중으로부터 발전한 라틴댄스로 무대화 되어 대중들의 큰 관심을 받으며 공연예술로써의 시장성을 확보하게 되었다. 대중매체의 발전과 함께 음악과 춤이 전 세계로 뻗어져 있는 라틴댄스는 대중들에게 어필 할 수 있는 큰 장점을 지니고 있다. 귀에 익숙한 음악과 흑인 음악 특유의 당김음, 심장박동소리와 같은 타악기의 두드림, 눈을 떼지 못하는 화려함의 극치를 보이는 의상 등은 대중들이 흥미롭게 느낄수 있는 친밀한 요소들이다. 본 연구에서는 총 8장으로 구성된「번 더 플로어(Burn The Floor)」에서 <The Samba>, <Leading Me On>, <The Latin Quarter>, <Fire In The Ballroom>의 라틴댄스가 무대화 된 장을 선정하여 공연예술로 성공 할 수 있었던 요소들을 주제 및 내용, 움직임, 음악 및 의상으로 나누어 살펴봄으로써 지속적인 무용예술의 대중화를 이끌어내고자 하였다. <The Samba>는 삼바춤으로 이루어진 장으로 관객들에게 삼바의 특징인 환희와 즐거움을 주며 유희적 성향을 보여주었다. 또한 인간이 태아 시절에 듣는 어머니의 심장소리와 같은 타악기의 라이브 연주로 관객들에게 정서적인 친밀감을 제공해 주었다. <Leading Me On>은 사랑의 테마로 남녀 사이에서 일어나는 사랑의 행복과 이별의 아픔 등의 누구나 가지고 있는 감성을 표현하며 관객들의 공감을 이끌어 내었으며 오브제의 사용과 무용수들의 다양한 무대구성을 보이며 공연예술적인 형식을 보여주었다. <The Latin Quarter>는 무용수가 객석으로 내려가 춤을 청하는 등의 관객의 참여를 유도하며 공감대를 이끌어 내었다. 그리고 테크닉적인 움직임을 부각시키는 화려한 의상을 선택하여 관객에게 보는 즐거움을 선사하였다. <Fire In The Ballroom>은 무용수에게 결투장면이나, 상대를 유혹하는 등의 캐릭터를 부여하면서 표현력을 극대화 시켰다. 관객들에게 기존의 즐기던 춤에서 무대 탱고의 신선한 모습을 보여주며 공감을 자아내었고, 탱고 특유의 관능미 넘치는 움직임과 의상으로 관객들의 시선을 고정시킬 수 있었다. 이와 같이 공연예술화에 성공을 거둔 작품 「번 더 플로어(Burn The Floor)」를 연구함으로써 무용예술의 대중화를 지향할 수 있는 방향성을 모색할 수 있었다.
