dc.description.abstract해외직접투자에 대해서는 다양한 선행적 연구들이 있었다. There have been various precedent studies on the effect of FDI. The main objective of this thesis is to examine Japanese outward Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) patterns confirming previous researches which are positive on the outcome of FDI. Since Japanese OFDI is quite focused on China, the author concentrated upon the relationship between China and Japan as host and home countries. As a result of the opening up of the Chinese economy together with the accumulating foreign exchange reserves, Japan’s outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) in China has continued to rise over the past decades. It can be characterized by a very high share of the manufacturing sector, the heavy and chemical industries in particular. It implies that Japan’s OFDI in China has contributed significantly to the rapid economic growth of China, especially through the economy’s structural change into more value-added industries. Due to the similar level of economic development and geographical proximity, China appears to replace some Southeast Asian countries in hosting Japan’s FDI. The characteristics of Japan’s OFDI patterns can be compared with those of its neighboring economies. Since its establishment of a diplomatic relationship with China in the late 1980s, South Korea’s OFDI has focused on China. Japan’s OFDI appears to be somewhat ‘balanced’. That is, unlike South Korea’s, it is not extremely focused on China although the share of China in Japan’s OFDI has increased significantly for the past decade. In addition, there is no policy or regulation in Japan that can be interpreted as one reflecting the relative gains problem in international relations.-
